I think I would call the Doctors offices first. It is my understanding that some of the drugstores are now receiving most of their shipments in reusable containers that the drug producers get back.

That is my understanding also - that they vaccinate the eggs before the chicks hatch. I have an egg piercer, that pricks a hole in the shell of an egg prior to hard-boiling to prevent cracking. I imagine the vaccine works similarly - they can pierce the hole and inject the vaccine without cracking the egg. Here is what my egg piercer looks like:


You place each end of the egg into the yellow hollow, and push straight down. A little needle (you can just see it in the middle of the hole if you look carefully) pierces through the shell as you push.

HEChicken, where did you get that egg piercer, that looks handy? Good job on making that incubator, I guess I just am not that creative with things like that.

My BC Marans rooster is still sick, I wasn't here at roost time to really dose him with the VetRx last night, I will have to do it today. I did put some in the water, but am not sure how much they really get that way. I hope I can get him well without having to give the whole flock an antibiotic. I hate to lose the eggs right now.

I got the egg piercer on eBay. It was only $3 and I had an eBay bucks certificate to use so it was free. I haven't used it that much though. My mother always had one so I was quite sure I needed one but the few times I used it, I actually had more problems with egg white escaping than I do when I don't use it so it ended up in the back of the drawer.

I have a couple of things I removed from old items. One is an old hood type hair dryer heater. It has a heat coil and a fan built in. I am thinking about buying one of those zoo med thermostats and trying it with the hair dryer unit. I"m thinking that would provide temp control, heat and air all together. Of course I would have to build a cabinet and test it to see how it actually works.

Styrofoam coolers ~ We would get tropical fish shipments in styro boxes. They were more square than the coolers and closer to the size of the incubators. You might try calling pet shops that carry tropical fish. Don't know if they still use them or not.

I'm freaking out here! DH's shift really wanted me to just make dinner for them Monday night instead of us all going out to eat. DH thinks most of them eat out all the time and the home-cooked meal would be the real treat for them. BUT ... I have that on Monday, Grandma's birthday and my part of that meal on Tuesday, treats to make for dogs and neighbors, and two Christmases I have to bring stuff to next week. So I told him they had to figure out what they want to eat and DON'T LEAVE ME HANGING UNTIL SUNDAY NIGHT!!! Right. He can't even tell me how many people are coming. I don't want to know who he THINKS is coming, I need to know who he KNOWS is coming. Right? Do you think I have a menu? The only thing he can tell me is they don't care what I make and he won't commit to what he wants to eat. Because I need more stress right now .....

That is awesome. If we're ever in a place where we have more room and put food outside, I'm going to copy that idea!

It's RAINING!

We got about 5 minutes of tiny, tiny drops. Not even enough to connect into a solid splotch on the sidewalk.

I don't know exactly how much rain we got, but it's enough that the ground is slightly damp still today. The chickens are happy, because it brought the bugs and worms out to play

Oh Danz, I've been meaning to say, I hope you will be as happy with the calendar as I am with mine. I placed the order Friday night between 10-11pm. Saturday morning I got confirmation that the order was complete. Monday morning an email that it had been shipped. And Thursday morning it was in my hands (I paid for the cheapest, slowest shipping or I would have had it even sooner). I am really happy with the quality of the calendars, both the printing and the thickness of the cardstock.

That hair dryer idea sounds awesome. Another project to add to your list....
