Consolidated Kansas

Well it took me 6 hours but I finally got a chance to make my peppermint cocoa. It was delicious. I was on the go all afternoon. I had to clean out two bins in the brooder that I had just done a couple days ago. Now it is dry and fresh again. I am just going to have to get my act together and get some more housing built.
They came and got my car. The wrecker driver said due to the amount of damage they'd probably total it. The guy at the body shop told me he'd either have the estimate or would report it as a total loss by Wednesday.
It snowed here all day and it's still snowing. About 4:00 it got to 33 degrees and started drizzling instead of snowing. Then the temp dropped again and we had freezing rain for an hour. Then it went back to snowing again. Tomorrow it will be an ice slick out there. It was just warm enough every thing was damp and then it started to freeze harder. I was out earlier and wasn't really cold at all but by late afternoon I was freezing. I have really got to reduce my work. This cold weather quadruples the amount of work I have to do out there. Plus making up special feed and water and filling the vaporizer for the sick chickens just adds more.
I've had a rough day. Biggy, my cat is very weak. He isn't eating at all and although he was drinking tons he won't drink now. I wouldn't be surprised if he passed tonight. At this point I just pet him and cry. I so want him to go peacefully without a lot of pain.
KarenS I am so sorry you are sick again. And Hawkeye you too. I know what you mean by washing your hands till your skin comes off. MIne are so dry and chapped but I am doing it to keep from cross contaminating the birds. When I was still working I just carried a container of lysol wipes with me and wiped everything down before I touched it or sat on it. I also had that sanitary hand stuff sitting all around where I worked.

Its just been a hectic end of the year. I hope that the new year brings better things for everyone. Mommahen and I were talking about how extraordinary this group on the kansas thread is. I am greatful to have such a wonderful group of friends. This year has been good and bad in so many ways. I can only hope that next year yields more good than the bad dealt to me and many of you this year. No matter how much has set us back this year there are always those things that make it all seem ok again.
I'm sorry everyone who is sick. As mothers, wives, sisters and of course crazy chicken ladies lol and you few crazy chicken guys out there we dont have time to be down and it is more annoying than anything. I wish a speedy recovery to you all. I hope everyone stays warm and safe tonight and have a happy new years eve night.

My condolences. Losing a dear pet is so very hard. I read somewhere that 9 out of 10 housecats who live to the age of 10 die of kidney failure, and it sounds like that is what is taking Biggy.

Yeah Sharol. It was very easy to recognize the signs after just loosing Tyggy in September. I guess I should be grateful that I had them for so long. I think it is pretty rare to have a cat live to 13 years, let alone one to live to 17 and another who is 16 still doing well. But it is also very heartbreaking.
I said I would never get another cat after loosing my 13 year old cat back in the mid 90's because it was so heartbreaking. But in less than a year a stray had a litter of kittens in my shop and Biggy was the first one I kept from the litter because he was so smart. Milk who is still living was in the second litter. And Tyggy was Biggy's sister's baby. We adopted out many and spent a ton getting them all neutered cause we got over run with kittens in no time. But the special ones had become my second family. They stayed after the kids all left home. And now I guess it's time for them to all pass. I wonder if I'll get used to not having a kitty to snuggle with me at night.

Aside from that, on a Happier note, I want to thank each and every one of you for being here. I don't honestly know how I could keep my sanity if I didn't have this wonderful group of friends to bounce my thoughts off of.
Happy New Year to each of you and God bless you for all you've done and been for me this year. Love you all!

When my DH and I got married in 2005, we had 4 cats and 3 dogs between us. In the meantime, we have lost all but 1 of the cats and 2 of the dogs. His elderly cat, Nanny, lived to be at least 22 (not sure since she was an adult when he got her), Calvin was diabetic and took insulin for 2 years before it took him. My little tiger cat (Jenny) just passed away one day at about 16 or so after having "fainting fits" off and on for a year. My adopted Cocker Spaniel had congestive heart failure and the meds just stopped working when she was 14. Since, we have acquired two long haired dachshunds who joined our (now) 16 year old short hair pointer (Charlie Brown), 15 year old golden retriever mix (Sunny), and one remaining cat, a 9 year old domestic long hair. Every time I lose a pet, I swear I'll never get another one, but how empty and dark our lives would be without the "little dog crazies" and our tiny female doxy trailing after the cat trying to get him to run.

They have all adapted well to the chickens, and everyone has a reasonable respect for everyone else (most of the time).

I will always have a pet, I suppose. If you don't risk the pain of loss, you don't have the pleasure of the memories. I need someone to snuggle with at night too (well, besides my DH) ;-). Your kitties have been loved and loved in return. Everyone comes out a winner in that situation.

. Happy New Year everyone. May everyones year be healthy and predator free.

Happy New Year my fellow Kansans!

Sharol you are so wise. I guess in times when I am not in duress I can think the same way. I hesitated to get my Great Pyrenees because I was afraid of loosing them. They have a short life span (about 10 years) so I knew I was taking a chance. But I have friends who have a 12 year old so I guess like most animals there are those that do better. But Marshmallow is my girl and I will feel the same when she goes.
I have to have some kind of pet around. At least my tears are short lived with the chickens....although the special ones just break my heart if they die. I guess I've come to accept their vulnerability. Some of my other birds like my geese, my turkeys, and a few of my peafowl would be a whole different story.
I certainly didn't watch the new year come in. I was dozing before 10:00. I am going to try to stay a little more optimistic. Things have been going pretty crummy for me recently and I've let it get me down. That really isn't the typical me. I've faced much worse for sure and am thankful to have the life I do.
Again I wish each of you a great year ahead. I will pray for rain and warmth and healthy birds for everyone.

Happy new year everyone!!! We are up after being up late... Ringing in the new year banging on pans and blowing trumpet blasts :) Sledding is the plan in a few minutes. My oldest will be coming back home today from Atlanta where her band took Grand Champion overall and for field and parade and played the halftime at the Chick Fil A bowl. Proud mama day! Made home made bread as French toast for when we come in from sledding and potato soup and cornbread ready for later. I love cooking with my own chicken eggs!!

So sorry so many folks are sick!! These flu bugs are horrible this year. I hope you all feel better quickly!

Momma hen- I love that kitchen set! I am taking a pic of it to share with our preschool teacher in hopes that she can find someone to make her one. Too cute!

I hope the new chicks and their transports all arrive home safely. It is slippery out there!

Danz, I so feel your pain. Unbelievable bad luck with the deer, being sick, pain from metal and the cold and a good friend leaving you..... The joy of the new little pups will hopefully ease some of it as well as time with that beautiful soon to be princess :)

Wishing you all a wonderful 2013!!
