Consolidated Kansas

KarenS, that's a good description all right, a circus act, LOL! These dogs are so intelligent though, they amaze me all the time. It's just the antics that makes it never dull around here.

maidenwolf, I am going to sell some of my white silky's. The pullets have not started laying yet. These birds, are just, well, chickens. No special breeding. I bought them just to get a couple of pullets, I have what I want, and the rest have to go!

I think Brinsea is having some quality control issues lately.
Agreed, agreed, agreed!!! I could just keep second'ing that! Looks like I got my Brinsea before they started having the idiots build them. So far my machine has been great. But yeah, they are going to lose all credibility with that kind of crap! I was seriously thinking about buying the Octagon 40 (a bit larger than my 20) but I think I'll lay low and not buy it. If anything, I might hunt around for a used R-COM or just bit the bullet and buy a new one. Nothing wrong with my Brinsea, but I would like two machines to work back and forth with and it looks like I can't trust the company to purchase a new one from them like I had intended. Sheesh.

Well I'm feeling kind of half alive today, not well by any means but maybe on the other side of this crud hopefully. My DH is not happy that we're not able to go this weekend to see his family. I told him he was welcome to go without me, but that wasn't really appealing to him either. He still isn't totally over it either after a week, it just seems to hang onto you once you get it. I feel wrung out like an old dish towel.
Oh no, so sorry! I hope you are on the upswing, though!

Looks like my birds have mites. Ive read to put sevin dust on them and coop. What about eggs can we still eat them during treatment?
Sevin dust is fine to use. I don't know where Karen saw that Sevin was not recommended, but there have been arguments over it for years just among poultry groups-- nothing new. The company itself has labeled it for poultry since the 30's??? Wood ash does not work like Sevin Dust-- it won't actually kill on contact like Sevin does. If you have a bad mite problem, the Sevin will have all the mites gone and dead in less than 5 minutes! Make sure you put it under the wings! I noticed that WalMart was carrying it again in the garden section. I bought a whole case last year worried that I would need a ton of it over the winter. So I have quite the stash! As everyone else said, eggs are fine to use as the Sevin dust does not enter the body like some chemicals can.

Ok great info thank you, and thank you too Danz. I have some buff colored chicks, all of them are starting to grow feathers and the buff ones I am talking about have buff tail and wing feathers coming in. I do have some yellow chicks with feathers growing in that are white with black among it. I have some white chicks, the fluff is white too, with white tail and wing feathers coming in. Here are a couple pics. they are not as good as I would like but this is it

I am guessing mille fleur OEGB???

Self blue?????It has black beak and legs and is a powder blue

This is white with silver blue in its wings and a blue dot on its head

Another mille fleur???

This is the only one like this with its lite chocolate color

same chick

its hard to see the lavender
The only thing I can comment on is that this is not lavender. I see gold coming in too-- so this chick might even have some kind of barring or pattern that will show up later.. And lavender chicks don't hatch yellow. They are a steely grey color-- deep color and dark. I'll see if I can hunt down a pic of lavender chicks.

Otherwise, your guess is as good as mine (probably better than mine) on the others! LOL Anyway, cute chicks and thank you for posting pictures of them! So fun to see them!!! I think you're going to have really pretty bantams!

Okay-- so I'm totally stoked!!! I got my American Standard of Perfection (latest edition) in the mail today!! WOOT!!!! I've been thru some of it and I can see this is really going to help with my 4-H kids! So glad I bought it!! It's a gorgeous book, too. Hardbound with gold stamping. Neat!

I found sevin and something called dairy and livestock dust says safe for poultry made by gordon's anybody tried it? I use the deep litter method in my coop do I need to clean it out and disinfection with bleach & water?

Chickendanz - so sorry about your house/farm. Couldn't the money place that hired the embezzler be held responsible - taken to court or something? Sometimes all that kind of legal action costs more than its worth, but its really really not okay that you got put into such a position at no fault of your own!

Trish - had to chuckle at the GP story. Danny is really into tools, equipment. Well, he's into everything (grin) - but seems to have a bent in that direction. One night at dusk I dropped my flashlight without realizing it, then when I needed it was struggling to see what I needed to see while getting the girls tucked away. Danny had seen me drop the flashlight, went and found it, and brought it to me in his mouth. One morning I was late at getting the girls out and about, and they were complaining. Danny took it upon himself to attempt to open the run. He got the latch turned/opened, and went and found a long stick to use as a lever to pull open the door. The run is an a-frame, and he wasn't strong enough to pull the weight of the door up from its closed position, but he had the stick placed through the handle - obviously figured out what he needed to do to get it open, if only he were a little stronger. He watches me intently with anything I use for opening and closing things, studies it, and then tries it out himself. I guess the puzzle intrigues him. He understands how to open a velcro fastener, can turn the screw on a c-bolt, etc. Just one smart puppy!

Love the chicks Maidenwolf - can't wait till I have some!! Decided to break my hen's brood this winter, wait till after the move to let her go broody. Once I move I'll have a big coop for current chickens, with a separated pen for juveniles, and current house can be a brooder house. Wish I also had a smaller brooder, just for chicks I'd purchase, in addition to the ones my hens will hopefully lay/raise. Anyone have an old hutch thingie, like for rabbits, standing around they'd like to find a home for? Maybe I'll have my Amish friends build me something.. I'd like to get some more rir pullets - not going to breed them, just for eggs. Also thought about cinnamon queen as they are supposed to outlay even the rir's. Anyone have any of those? What are their temperaments like?

Jeanie - we'll practically be neighbors! Pyrs are very smart, and if they don't like where/how they are living, are likely to move on and attempt to find something better. One thing that will cause them to "travel" is if they don't have a companion and/or a "job". Sound like your calf might suit for both, or at least Travel thinks he's found an upgrade!

Hawkeye - fun that you go through Fredonia from time to time. Where is your farm? Once I get moved you'd be welcome to take a detour over to our place - about 5 miles east and 2 miles north of fredonia.

Frizzled Pink - CONGRATS on your 5 year anniversary. So good to hear....
