Hi folks!! I've been fighting to keep up on the hatchalongs on here and haven't managed to make my way into this thread in a while. I worked over 65 hours last week and I'm a mess.
How are you all!?! Are you as happy as I am that we're getting a bit of a spring?
Give me an email chookschick@gmail I'm in Lawrence and I have at least 3 families that are wanting hens right now- you'd get pet homes.
You nearly caused me a heart attack!! I read that wrong and thought it said you were down TO 28 birds...that would make me the likely candidate for the most birds around here, and I always console my husband by telling him I know other people in Kansas who are perfectly sane who have more birds than me...
Keep it that way, sister!!
But seriously, I'm sorry about the Oxine-spill-cough and I'm glad you dropped your feed bill some. I'm about to have a serious sell-off. It's going to have to be pairs and trios, though. I am adamant about not taking the roos to be processed if I can help it.
Danz, I highly recommend the SweeterHeater for this. It runs on 18w of power and you can hang it in each level. The energy savings would save you a lot over a short while, so they pay for themselves. I worked out my electric bill and saved the cost of mine in 7 weeks. I got the 11x16 (or something like that) and it is incredibly safe and easy. I'd definitely get one of them for each level if I was doing a multi-unit brooder. Never buy a lightbulb again!! It's like a more robust and versatile version of the Ecoglow. There is no way to convey all the benefits until you try one...makes a big difference to me to not have to worry about a fire risk from the fixture, too. Losing one home to a fire is plenty in a lifetime.

I need to get rid of most of my birds:-(. While the city allows them, my neighborhood is enforcing a bylaw in my home owners association. Ours are "caged" pet birds, but they call them live stock.... I am just sick....
So.... I would prefer they go to homes where they will be pets. They all I've to be held and are very social. I am in the Topeka, Lawrence area. Please PM me if you would like any of the following. I would prefer they go in pairs if possible.
2 black copper Marans- lay beautiful dark eggs
3 EE Greenish blue eggs, Ginny, ReeRo, Deb
1 Buff Orpington- Molly
1 White Rock- Diva
1 Splash Rock with Curly toes
1 Salmon Favarolle- Molly
I am going to really fight to try to keep my Silkies.... But I also have three of them- white, splash and red. My daughter adores them....

Well on the news front here, I am down about 28 birds as of today. I made some really good deals and the guy took a lot of what I have. I am going to be really low on eggs for awhile though. I sold all my cuckoo marans, dominiques, an EE, a sussex, all my polish, and a Swedish Flower hen roo. Maybe the feed bill will go down just a little. I need to do some more pen dividing and moving and get some girls moved out of the ghetto trailer.
There were a couple of birds I was really attached to and it made me sad to let them go. Like my silver laced polish named Pretty. I have a few eggs in the bator from them but I have no idea if they are fertile or not. I really don't need them.
I only have some nice roosters to sell and a handful of mixed hens that need to go now.
I need to get some separate pens for my brahmas and my cochins then I could move my red stars in one hen house and the white rocks and new Hamp rooster for making new red stars in the other hen house. I guess I'd better get busy building more stuff.
It was really cold out there today. I've been coughing a lot since I spilled all that oxine yesterday. I think I must have breathed in a bunch of it. The cold air really got me wheezing bad.
I did some sewing while I was waiting for the guy to get here. I need to get back to that and get this mess finished. I have spent more time ripping out than actually sewing. Now I know why I quit sewing all the time! It must be my adult ADD that I can't remember to do things right!![]()

bbsnooks, I did some research on the stuff you said you had. It is very similar but not quite the same chemical makeup as Oxine. If I read it right the FDA took it off the market.
I really had a busy day and just finally wore out. I had to lay down for a little while. Then I had to get back out and feed the birds. I had an opportunity to sell some more birds this afternoon but I asked them to wait until tomorrow. I just knew I didn't have the energy to chase birds again today.
So with luck maybe I'll sell a few more tomorrow.
I had 3 white English Orps hatch today so I hope they do well. It's kind of hard to tell them from some of the other chicks cause white Orpingtons are born with color on them.
I've been wondering if I could build a wooden multi layer brooder. I am just not sure what heat source I would use for it. It seems like I keep having to replace bulbs. In the long run I'd be better off with a permanent heat source of some kind. The problem of course is having something that wouldn't break the bank for multiple pens.
I really am getting to the point I want to get things done and get breeds divided. I'm tired of working so hard all the time on these projects. I like building stuff but I'd rather do it when I chose..not all the time.
