Consolidated Kansas

I lost the bird this morning. It was still alive when I poked my head in the room but as I was preparing my kid's lunch box, I heard some flapping sound from the room. I ran in there and saw him having a seizure and then he was gone. I'm heart broken to say the least. I may have to see if someone will have a RIR for sale in the Fall. It is just too darn hot now and all the birds are just suffering.

I'm definitely planting more trees in their yard this Fall just so to provide some much needed shades. Their yard is just too big to put anything up for shades so planting trees is the only solution and it is not a fast solution either since it takes a while for the trees to grow.

Argh...

It is just not a good start to my Friday. To top it off, my husband has been sick. He was dizzy and been laying in bed all day yesterday.

Lizzy - It will scare the bejibee out of me if I see the rattles so close to me. I just can't do snakes.

Trish44 - So sorry you keep losing the guineas. The ticks and bugs in my area are bad. I may have to get a few in the Fall or Spring to keep them critters down.

Rooster - Losing birds is just the pits. Hope you can find a solution to keep the hounds away.

Stay cool everyone!

Sometimes they will do that when they first start laying, you may even find a soft shelled one or two at first till they get the machinery going well.

Welcome Zigzag45, feel free to join in any time. We have had quite a few new people lately.

maidenwolf, it sounds like mites, maybe she didn't get rid of them all.

I just came in after working for the last two hours on the goat shelter. I got all the rest of the siding on & filled in some places with wood putty. Now we need to get the trim boards & put those on & it will be ready for paint. I need to paint my breeder coop still, so I'll probably just paint them to match. I'll be glad to have this project done so I can move on to the next one. It's always something it seems like.

We were out working on the goat shelter the other day & saw one of the momma outside cats taking a snake she had caught to her kittens. She took it out under a tree & then called the kittens over. We watched as one of the bolder kittens grabbed the whole thing & ran off with it. It's fun to watch them bring their catch to their kittens. We have a lot of snakes here because there are a lot of mice & rats that live down on the front 5 acres that we don't mow. When I used to try to mow it I saw them slithering or running all over as I went. I don't even try to mow it any more, it's just too much with what I have to mow around the house & too hard on the mower.
I don't know how well she dusted so maybe so, poor thing. Do they live on the head and neck too?
jhammett I'd guess your reds are the ones laying. Orpingtons usually start at about 23-25 weeks but with hot weather that might not be on schedule.
Maidenwolf, Yeah it's most likely mites or head congestion. Ask her if they ever sneeze and have her check their nostrils to see if they are clear. If she has treated for mites she mite try some VetRx or even some plain camphor oil in their nostrils.
I moved my larger peachicks out to a pen outside. They are afraid to move. SIlly things. And the ones left in here seem confused. Silly birds.
I was supposed to have someone here for guineas but I haven't heard from them. Just as well. I still need to get them moved to the brooder house.
Today has been one of those days I worked all day and haven't gotten anything done. I still have feeding and stuff to do.
Ok I will give her my vetrx and hope it turns out that it was just mites, Can they get congested without being sick? Like we do? Maybe dust or grass seeds etc in their nostrils? would they open their mouths to breath like when they have a respiratory disease?
Oh cute!--new generation house pea?

Welcome to BYC--growing up we always had one of dads old tube socks that was filled with sevin and then tied at the top and whenever going out into pasture we would use it like a powder puff at sock line, waist line etc , sounds like the 5 year old loves her chickies

@maidenwolf--love your white frizzle-lost the pic somehow in multi's

Thank you, She is a silkie , all of her body is black except her face so dunno what happened there. She was a surprise frizzle so I was jumping for joy when I noticed her feathers turning out.

I am so sorry for your lose, it is never easy. What a pain this weather is. I have one shade tree in my yard, not sure of the kind but it is the kind that the "helicopter" seeds come off of. They don't get too tall but provide lots of shade. A lot of birds find shelter there and some under my front porch, which is undesirable but in this heat I cant push them out. I have a canopy I am putting up to see if it helps them.

Maidenwolf, yes they will open their mouths to breath if they are congested. Some of that could be combined with the heat as well. Personally I would give them some probiotics just to boost their immune system a little. If she has any yogurt, fruits, vegetables, greens, or garden produce it would be a good time to give them some.
Sorry about your rooster Tweety. I am worried about the heat today myself. I am down to mostly penned birds now and they don't get the opportunity to find their own shade like the free rangers do. I sure could use another dozen fans!!! I think the one that works the best is an old oscillating fan cause it gives the birds a chance to spread out instead of all being in area to get a breeze. Btu it's the only one I own.
Better get out and get busy. I have a million things to do.

I will pass this along. I gave her all the info I had so far. She said they don't seem to be congested and they scratch at their ears like dogs do when they have ear mites. Do birds get ear mites, now I am wondering. Anyway, I gave her vit/min supplement for their water the other day, it has electrolytes. I want to go help but really am worried about bringing any home to mine, should I be?

I just heard that Lees Summit, MO just passed the law last night for urban chickens! Sound like they will have very strict rules like where and what the coop can be made of etc, but the passed. Now my friends that want hens that don't live on acreage can get them as long as their HOA allows it.

I really need to get rid of my rooster. If anybody needs an Easter Egger and you are near the Kansas City area, please contact me. I need to move my baby bantams into the coop, but he would probably kill them if he tried mating them.

I have thought I found a home for him multiple times, they either become no shows or they have found a rooster before I get back to them. I do have one person that wants him for BBQ sauce, but I can't go that route yet.

Impromptu dinner Saturday?

I'm in Wichita and appear to be free for a meal- any takers? I know it's little warning, but I'd love to see anyone who can make it. I'm staying in Old Town, but have a vehicle!

Gotta run...(pant pant) so much to do!!

Hi guys I have missed ya :) I'm sorry I haven't been on, I havent been feeling myself lately. But I'm back and very exited about the Johnson county fair next month X3 I'm already getting my birds ready. Another thing that happened is my silkie hen is broody with six eggs!!! Wow that's a lot of eggs for a silkie. But I'm going to been on more often now :)

Completely off topic:

Wednesday morning I found a tiny kitten in the chicken run on a straw bale. I assumed it was a male since it was a brown tiger striped, fairly non-descript kitten. My adult male (neutered), large cat doesn't like other male cats, so I assumed I was safe. You know what they say about assume (and I did it twice). I took it to the vet for examination of a hurt paw and maybe kitten shots. Turns out she's a girl. The leg problem is probably nerve related and may or may not clear up on its own. The plan was to get her checked out and then find her a new home.

Her name is now Emma.

As the vet said, finding a home for a less than perfect, female, black tabby kitten is against the odds. She is only about 7 weeks old and 1.5 lbs, so she it really tiny. She is very sweet, and my main concern has been for her safety with our 2 dachshunds. As you can see, they are getting along pretty well. The doxy in the picture is our 14 lb. longhaired female. She follows our other cat (12 lbs.) around all the time and chases him when she can get away with it. She learned early that he has weapons on his feet. This was the first day that they have been together (except through a baby gate), and it is going much better than I ever hoped.

She is putting weight on the foot, but it still turns under when she is tired. I have hopes that it will be 80% normal for her. It sure doesn't seem to slow her down in the slightest.

This morning my hubby saw a bull snake in the yard. He watched it, and would have let it go of it hadn't turned toward the chickens. We tried to care it away, but no luck. So he whacked it with a small board. Poor snake, but rhe chickies were kept safe.
