Consolidated Kansas

Danz, I'm sorry the auction didn't turn out so great, it does seem like April would be a better month for it since March weather is so volatile. I guess it's a good thing you didn't build a bunch of cages & take birds there, it sounds like it would have been a waste of time. That's too bad about the pheasants, those are some gorgeous birds. I'm glad you got your fencing, although it's too bad you had to pay more for it than you were planning.

That's funny about Mr. Meat, you'll have to tell Hawkeye about that, she will get a kick out of it.

I came home yesterday to a flood did any one else get crazy swamp like rain the water was wading a foot deep to get to the barn I checked all the corners as I was wooried water was so deep it would come into the dirt floor it did in too corners any one have any suggestions on preventing this in the future our the best way to dry things inside? The water sank in over night so is only standing in isolated pools in the yard but idk if I should wait to put hay back in the corners of the barn till its all dried out? So any suggestions would be helpfull.

I got the birds taken care of. They all acted really happy to see me. Most of them still had plenty of feed left but you know new food is awesome even if it's identical. I had a ton of eggs out there. I sure hope they didn't get too cold to develop. That would be the major problem with having a really efficient food and water system that would take care of the birds. They wouldn't see me as the Chicken Mamma over all. I love the special relationships I have with some of them.
I think I'm getting way too old for these road trips. I am beyond exhaustion today. I overslept this AM and feel ready for bed already. It felt like the middle of winter out there today too.
The new pheasant have settled into their coop. I imagine they think they got transported to a different world because it's much colder than it was where they came from. New home, new food, new feeding person. Poor things.
Clean squared if it were me I'd let it dry first. You don't want to chance your bedding getting wet and molding. We got more moisture than I thought last night. There was quite a bit sitting here and there like in buckets and wheel barrels after it got above freezing out.

Hi fellow Kansans!

I'm 3 weeks into raising chickens and so far I'm loving every minute! I'm just outside of Topeka on 1 acre and hurrying to finish our coop so the chicks can move outside soon. They are growing super fast! I got my chicks from Heartland Hatchery when they came to topeka. Here are some of my chickies:

and I added a few more (they are 3 days old now): Right now I have the new babies in a separate brooder. Can I mix them in with my 3 week olds?

Welcome :) Your chicks are adorable! I love the little hat :) Do you have a picture of your coop? I love seeing others' coops and setup.

Welcome to our group. Feel free to jump in and tell us more about yourself. Great pictures. I want to test my chick ID-ing based on breeds I have had. Let me know how far off I am. I could probably do better in person but here goes.

1. silver laced Wyandotte
2.Turken
3.gold laced Wyandotte
4. Possibly a barred rock. Hard to tell from that angle. Could be another SLW or about any spangled bird.
5. Possibly a cochin (or if these are bantam the little guy on the basket could be a mille fleur d'uclle missing a muff)
6.white crested black polish
7.Not sure...the feather color threw me and I can't see the legs or comb. Looks like it has a muff so I'll say d'uccle.
8.Wellsummer
Let me know how I did. I'm pretty confident i could get 100 % person but pictures don't always reveal everything I look at. Very good pictures though I might add.

I would put the smaller birds out first then add the older ones one by one. The first sign of bullying I'd move them out and try again later. I mix bird sizes all the time but I have a way to divide them in a brooder house where the little ones are there with them but on the opposite side of a divider for some time before I open the gate between them.

This stupid thing is acting up. I just hit submit and it erased my entire post. Now how will I ever remember what I wrote?
Welcome to our group Carla Hayes! Nice pictures. And congrats on your first chickens. Jump in and tell us more about yourself and feel free to ask any questions you have. You may get various opinions but we are all very friendly and that is the beauty of this group. We can give different answers but we get along and respect each other. We tend to learn from each others ideas.

So pictures can be deceiving but I decided to make a game for myself and try to guess at what kind of chicks you got based on what I've had over the years. Sometimes hidden features in pictures like combs or feet can entirely change what we are looking at as well as bantam vs Large Fowl, but here goes. My guesses:
1.silver laced Wyandotte
2. Turken
3. Gold laced Wyandotte
4.Barred rock. Could be a mottled breed because I can't clearly see the head and the barring isn't clear. Has the yellow legs though.
5. Not sure on the color but could be cochin on the basket. If it's a bantam it could also be a d'uccle that is missing his muff
6.White crested black polish
7.Color confuses me but it looks like I can see a muff. I am guessing this is a bantam of some kind so I may be totally off. And I can't see the legs. If theres a muff it could be a d'uccle. Legs and a frontal shot would help here a lot. Theres even a remote chance it could be a silkie but I don't see a top knot or the comb shape.
8. Welsummer.
Let me know how I did. I am fairly sure I could get 100% in person but pictures leave out a lot of details.

Izzy I love the bench but have to admit I also thought nest box.
Dh is out of hospital with 2 -1 weeko visits I'm done seeing a hospital room. He has cellulitis in his foot that will not heal. He does sleep a lot now and is not eating very much anymore maybe 1 meal a day. He says he feels fine but I'm not so sure. All this has taking a toll on our kids my younger two are scared of sleeping alone. My oldest is showing signs of depression sleeping all the time not eating:(.

I wanted to know if anyone has experience with giant Cochin? Can you tell me about it?

So sorry your husband is not doing better. I am not trying to sound morbid but Hospice has a booklet they give out for free on dealing with death and I really think it would be beneficial to you and your children. It might help you deal with this whole thing and the kids. They may even have some other information available to help even more with the kids. They are a wonderful group and they can be a great support and source of information even if you don't need their services.
Yes I raised Giant cochin for years. Just sold my last ones a month or two ago. They are wonderful docile birds. Much better layers than they are said to be. Very good broodies and great mothers. And they are gorgeous. They're easy going and do well in confinement. They aren't fliers due to their size.

I'm sorry things are so tough. Danz's suggestion about hospice, or some other professional your kids can trust and talk to (like a school counselor?) is a good one.
