chicklover56 , I'm really sorry about your chicken. I would still be very concerned she is still egg bound or has had an egg break inside her as well as the prolapse. If egg peritonitis occurs her chances are slim and she would need a treatment of Baytril to cure her. It is very expensive and is restricted in use. Only a vet can make a decision to use it since it is not tested for the use in chickens. The prolapse would have occurred from her trying to get the egg out. Take the steps to put the prolapse back in, but unless that egg is out there is not much hope for her. She may have just been slightly deformed to begin with which caused the problem. Since your birds are at the laying point be sure you are giving them layer feed. The gleet you witnessed was obviously a result of what is going on inside.
I personally never give up on a chicken as long as they still have the will to live.
Dani4Hedges, that could simply be cecal poop and maybe not a concern at all. Chickens empty their cecals usually at least once a day as they get older. It really stinks and it is dark brown normally and runny. It's all part of the bird world....not exclusive to chickens.
As a precaution, I would give them some probioitics and or vitamins in their water for a few days and see if that helps. Have you changed their diet and given them fresh veggies or feed for older chicks? If so, be sure to keep the grit going. Sometimes introduction to new foods will cause diarrhea. It just takes a while for their systems to adjust to the different levels of protein and nutrients. I've found that meal worms or other high protein foods will cause diarrhea in my birds. Sunflower seeds and other higher protein snacks can do the same.
It won't really hurt them...it's just a matter of inconvenience for you if they are cooped up.
As long as you aren't seeing blood and they are acting normal and not lethargic, I wouldn't really worry too much. Just adjust accordingly. i.e. if you are giving them new foods, do so gradually and let their systems get used to it.
Yesterday was a bust. I got so very little done. Some days I swear the I get in slow motion and get absolutely nothing done.

Danz,
Ok thank you so much yep it definitely appears to be the cecals poo cause you described it perfectly and while I did give them mealies last week and a handful of sanflower seeds on Sat with plenty of grit i haven't given them anything else and no more chick grit after I saw the brown stinky poo Monday night so ok will go back to allowing them grit and will go ahead and add vitamins to the water and give them a bit of greek yorgurt just to make sure thanks again :)

Anybody around topeka or manhattan that has eggs I might try hatching? I can't seem to find any local eggies and I'm not doing shipped again! Whoo-whee you should have heard my 4yo crying about the eggs that didn't make it (32% hatch rate!) Someone suggested I check here. You can PM me price/location. Thanks everyone!

Don't know about you all, but the girls and I have been enjoying the heck out of this weather. The weather people though, are still predicting a colder, harsher winter then normal. Hope they're wrong.

I'm loving the weather especially when I have so much to do right now. I think winter is starting this weekend from what I hear. Not good.
I think our winter will be similar to last year. That it really starts kicking butt in January and we kind of miss spring all together. Sure makes it painful for trying to sell spring chicks. And it's so much more difficult to raise them when they have to be kept confined because of the cold.
I'm starting to gear up on putting eggs in the incubator. Not a lot of laying going on but at least I can check fertility etc.

Danz I'm surprised you're getting any eggs to check fertility on. I'm sure not getting hardly any right now. I've had to turn my egg customers away because I just don't have enough for everyone. I keep hoping they will get with it again. I know winter laying is never as good as warm weather laying but this has been ridiculous every since I got back from vacation the end of October.

Boy howdy, I hear that. My Araucana chicks from last spring are all 3 laying. I'm getting 2 or 3 pretty little eggs from them (2 greenish blue, 1 blue) every day. I'm getting an occasional egg from the Barred Rock and Speckled Sussex that were hatched last summer, an egg every couple of days from the two broodies that are living with the Orps, and an occasional egg from the orpington pullet (26 weeks old). It sounds like a lot, but I'm lucky to get 2 brown eggs a day all together with the little blue eggs. Barely enough to keep us in eggs, and surely none to share. 18 potential layers. I hate winter. Well, no not really, but I'll be glad when the days start getting longer in another couple of weeks.

My tri-color kitten Daisy died last weekend. She had been sick with the respiratory infection that has been killing weaker cats at the shelter for the last month. She fought it for 2 weeks, but she was just too little, I guess. I realized when I went in to clean on Thursday that the other kittens her age (6-7 months) are twice or 3 times her size, so I'm guessing there was something else going on with her. It was so sad. She was such a sweet little thing -- she just didn't thrive. The vet implied that she may have had feline leukemia that complicated the virus infection, but there is no real way to know. I guess you don't see that they aren't growing if there isn't a comparison to use.

I'm sorry sharol: ( we have a little girl Susan who's about 6 months old Andy boys are just in love with her. We'd be so sad if she died. I am sorry for your little girl.

I am sorry about your kitten, Sharol. I have this one cat with the respiratory stuff bad. But I can't treat her cause any effort to do so results in blood...My blood. She is the absolute worse cat to try to treat in any way. She was a rescue and had lived in a suburban community just getting what she could to eat. She can be an absolute rip. I have often wished I could medicate her into sleep and then treat her for everything all at once.
Speaking of animals, my puppies are getting their eyes open. It was too hot in their dog house and we just caught Britt trying to move them. I unplugged the sweeter heater and opened the top door to cool it off in there. Tomorrow she'll be wanting that heater.
