Renee thanks for the advice I will try to difuse the anxt when I can by letting them out or changing the cage. I guess time will tell. I do have three old hens and they certanly do not put up with the randy roos.
Hey Jenn welcome we seem to have a few new people. I would love to see your birds some day.
Just for discussion; Anyone here ever see the movie "Food INC." Advertised on Opra so I got it through Net Flix. I think there is something there that all of us can capitolize on. (pardon my spelling) Chickens have become everyday food for every American. With the utility of eggs and meat not to mention animal rights, I think we can do a lot more. I liked the movie a lot but I will watch it again since it dosent cost to do so. That way I get a less emotional perspective.

I decided that I should maybe make people aware there is a Kansas Poultry People yahoo group (kansaspp). There used to be quite a few active members, but it's really died out the last couple of years. Since there seem to be more Kansas people around lately I thought maybe I should make people aware of it.

Several weeks ago there were a few posts regarding the number of birds that can legally be kept in Wichita. I guess if you look in one place it says "3" and in another it says "5". So....I found out for sure which it is. My doorbell rang last week and it was a guy from the health department. I guess they had had a complaint that I am "keeping chickens but not taking good care of them". WHAT??? So he asked if he could see them and I told him "sure" and led him to the backyard. He kind of laughed as he realized the problem. In back of me is a retirement community and separating my backyard from them is a 7' solid brick wall. My coop is up against the wall. He said the thinks it was some older person in the retirement home, who can see out their window into my backyard but cannot see the coop, so thought the chooks had nowhere to shelter from the weather. Once he saw the coop, feeder, waterer, and dog igloo that they can hide out in during the day, he said he was satisfied that they are being well cared for. Anyway, as we were walking back to his van, we talked about the legality of keeping them in city limits and I asked if the limit is 5 or 3. He confirmed it is FIVE. So for everyone who was wondering, this is "straight from the horse's mouth". I have a permit to keep up to 12 but only have 6 right now. He did ask to see the permit since I have 6, and wrote down the license number but said "everything is in order" and he'll close out the complaint. He was so nice and we had a good laugh about the confusion.

Well, I thought the new ordinance said 3 without a permit, but I'll be glad to be corrected by the health dept., especially since his number is LARGER! Do you know what his title is (and maybe his first name), so I can cite his expertise if I end up with more than three?! THANKS, HEchicken!

Ooops. I guess I should have taken down that info. He said the Health Dept office is located at 9th & I-135 and suggested I go down there when its time to renew my permit (I did the original one by mail). If that's not far from you, it might be worth a visit to be able to "get something in writing"?
