Too many birds, too many breeds running about and too high of grass right now to know exactly what's what at the moment.

new to kansas and looking for some chickens. We live in the North central region. My kids are looking forspeckled sussex, leghorns (any color but white), polish, guineas, ducks (open to breed) and turkeys (open to breed). We had to get rid allot to move down here so the kids were only able to bring there dogs, there mini rex and the family goat. We have a 20 acre farm and we are looking to adopt some new animals. Our family goat is in desperate need of a companion..he plays with the dogs and kids and his know napping at the front door and trin to come in the house with the kids. Im pretty sure he has forgotten that he is a goat and just walks right in the house like its his...and he is a togg so he isnt that small. I'd hate to keep him in a pen because he likes to free range and be around us so im thinking that if he had company he would be so bad. Love him to pieces but a togg walking into the hosue every time the dogs and kids come in...................

thanks for your help

karey

ps - my kids are also interested in showing the chickens (outside of 4h) so wanted to get more info on that and how to find breeders in the area...THANKS!!

On my breeds - I'm guessing from seeing the pics on here - but can't complain - paid $2 for 6 chicks on clearance - ended up with 4 hens and 2 roosters .... so not a bad deal for a crap shoot... they were all in one bin

it was funny - I got the ones I did cause they were the only ones in the bin w/color to them - and I didn't want leghorns

2 were black - they ended up being the golden laced wyandottes - (one of the roos - OMG beautiful)

2 were gray - ended up being the marans ( the other one of my roos - he is gorgeous)

2 were just a touch of yellow - ended up being the amberlinks - 2 huge hens

I have room for some more and live out in the country - so I am planning on going to the fair - try to get hooked up with some people selling

I'd love to get some barred rock hens though - so if anyone wants to part with em - preferably young adults - but don't mind older ones...

I'd also love some rhode island reds - and buff orpingtons - those birds are sooooooo gorgeous

I started out doing this only cause my 3 year old watched the Hannah Montana movie - and Hannah had chickens - kid wanted chickens.

I decided it would be good to have pets that actually help with their keep - and grew up with chickens - and love those fresh eggs.. - so it ended up being more for me than her

I also have a history of spanking my chickens. lol - smacked my rooster on the butt when he tried to get all "cocky" and went after the kid... he doesnt mess with me much now

kbhear80 - Welcome! Nice photos on your BYC page. Gee, I wish we could have a goat in Wichita!

naughty - I'd love to see photos of your chickens - esp. the roosters!

Just for the fun of it, I've been keeping a running list of the Kansans who've posted on this thread since it started -- I'm up to 36! (37 including me) I'm sure there are many more of us.

How fun! Perhaps I should change the title and do a Kansas roll call and see if we can find a few more?

i was so excited to find this page. its huge in michigan. My mother in a member and they have gathers/pot lucks and etc. she loves it. She has even taken my kids to some of the gatherings and they had such a great time and came home with new birds everytime. Do you guys ever have any gatherings or anything? If so id love to make it to one or even help set one up if anyone is interested. i think it would be a blast! i havent been able to find anyone very close to us that has chickens but have talk to diva and i am considering taken the drive to visit lol. Kids love chickens and collecting eggs and whats a farm without chickens?! Later today when it cools down we are ganna work more on our coop and make rus for each of the breeds we are looking for. Though my daughter has her heart set on a pink coop (not ganna happen lol).

Our goat is his own story lol. A little orphan goat who is know a spoiled lovable monstor. That is why we couldnt part with him and moved him with us from Michigan. That goat is so attached he would be lost without his kids. The pic on the page is a daily event for us. Taking a walk down the driveway and back with the animals. The goat even runs alongside my son when he is riding his bike. Its a riot to watch. I think i have been talked into adopting a mini donkey for him to play with...... im a sucker for a cute face and big ears.

Does anyone make it to the fair in abilene? My son will be showing his rabbits in open class and we were thinkin of maybe pickin up a few birds there.

As far as I know we have not had any get together. The closest we came was at a swap meet. A get together could be fun, I have been to some for a RMNP forum and it was a blast.

I know I will not be making it to the Abilene fair, good luck to your son. Saturday morning my boys and I are going to the Shawnee County Fair in Topeka and August 2nd our county fair starts.

We had him all signed up for 4h back in michigan but it was to late when he moved down here so he is showing in open class. Should be a great way to meet knew people though so we are looking forward to going.

if a few people are interested im sure we could find a central location and find some fun stuff to do. I can contact my mother and see what all they do for there get togethers and get some ideas.
