Is there going to be any wire under or over the shade cloth? The fiber netting and shade cloth won't stop a coon or a dog.

Yes i am currently building a rock wall all the way around the bottom to enclose it more. I also have a old dog house that i plan to use at the other end.

I'm referring to what you have the sides covered with......a coon or dog is going to be able to go right thru it. You need to put hardware cloth on the sides or your birds aren't going to last very long.

"The truth of the many outway the wisdom of one" I am sure that is a quote from someone. If not except it as my advise this day. Much heart ach is caused by raccoons and dogs every year. Man what fabulous weather!

It's true: Katy speaks the wisdom of many and is helping to prevent sorrow!

I build for bear around here, and I'm the only one I know who hasn't lost to a ground predator. I have lost one bird only, and it was this time of year last year, to a hawk. It may have actually been a juvenile eagle, it was soooooo big. Right by the river, we have plenty of those, too.

Either way, the latest tragedies have been from dogs and foxes for many, and the netting never prevents, just delays.
1/2" hardware cloth is the only way to go!

Hello all! Great to see so many Kansas chicken people. I'm not native. Grew up around St. Louis, Missouri. Have also lived near Baton Rouge Louisiana, Colorado Springs Colorado and Springfield Missouri. Got to go where the job is so I have been in Wichita now for 4 years. I have a backyard flock of 3 ameracanas and one dog (Pomerian). Have a son and daughter both living on campus at WSU. And a wife of 26 years who is going back to college at Emporia State working on her Master's in Library Science. Looking forward to getting to know you all and learning more about these interesting pets.

From the sounds of the people that I've been talking to this is going to be a big sale.

In the fall we usually have between 600-800 cages of poultry. Most of which will be sold on Saturday through the swap part of the sale. I think last fall we had 900+ cages.

I think I just might try and get down to Yates center for the big sale. How does the swap part work?

I believe I need to thin my little flock by about 5-6 birds. I was over zealous when I finally got to go by my chicks and now I know it'll be too tight of quarters when the cold weather comes and they're needing to stay inside more. I haven't decided which of the girls I'll need to relocate but my partridge cochin roo will be among of the group. One of my girls (a black australorp) turned out to be a roo and I'll keep him since I raised him. All the girls I'd want to sell I purchased as day old chicks at our Orscheln store on May 14th. The cochin I bought from a woman south of Garnett. I read somewhere very recently that started pullets can go for $15-$25 depending on the breed, I think. I have no other idea what to ask or how to go about selling them. No, I haven't asked around in my area yet, I just know of one person I wouldn't sell to. These girls in question have yet to get their full combs and waddles so haven't started to lay. It seems like it'd be better to relocate them before they start. The cochin roo would just be one too many roos in my hen house thru the winter months, and the much bigger Australorp, I believe, has established himself as the top man about the place but the little guy still gets to do his roo thing, he's just not as big a smarty pants about it now.

I'd appreciate some advice here, or to know if anyone is interested. They've been raised well, and I wouldn't be selling any of them if I didn't know it was the best thing for all my birds. I'd like to get this done before too long and we're into colder weather. The girls in question would be some of my Rhode Island Reds, New Hampshire Reds and possibly a Buff Orpington. Like I said I haven't sorted out just which ones yet. I figured I'd ask you all for some feedback before I start making inquiries.

Man, I'm starting to fell sad about this already....... Dang!
