Unfortunately I am too much of a softie to eat this one - I was hoping to get enough hens to keep them both - but not happening. When I buy more chicks in spring, I'll make sure I don't name any of them until I know what they are... will be easier to get rid of them.

Of course I also thought I had 6 full sized breeds when I got the chicks - and ended up with 4 bantams... cute birds - but I want full sized eggs... - luckily the two full sized birds ended up being hens. 3 eggs a day takes care of my breakfast and any baking I need to do. I still want more hens... lol I have to stay away from you people.... chicken math is contagious!

Wow Fondofchicks, that sucks. Speaking of chicken math though, I've read through a lot of statutes where fowl is used in the plural form. In the definitions it has something like (fowl - unit of 20) so 3 fowl would be 60 chickens.

Hows that for chicken math.

Honestly the whole banning of roos I think is stupid. I get the point, really I do, no one wants to be woken up and kept awake at 3 or 4AM by a roo. How many people want to be woken up/kept awake by a howling dog? Roos can be moved inside for the night, kept in a rooster box, sound resistant coop, etc. Your typical noise ordinances aught to have it pretty well covered. Go ahead, ask my neighbors about my roos. They'll tell you I surely have one, maybe occasionally two. As to early AM wake-ups, they'll tell you it's rare (hey some chicks mature faster than I expect) and quickly curtailed.

Naughty- The longer I have a breed the quicker I can usually tell with a fair degree of accuracy the sexes. Except the Silkies, who still throw me at times. I am quite enjoying hatching sexlinks though. Maybe something to consider. Then you know right away who's going to be staying.

The girl who's thinking about the AM roo is considering pairing with her BR girls for sexlinked EEs.

In a perfect world, I would just buy some older hens who are definitely girls and not have to think so much... lol but no one wants to sell hens!

Last year I bought my chicks late, when they were on "clearance" (50 cents a piece) and they were all lumped together. I got lucky to have only 2 roos out of 6. I hadn't originally planned on chicks - but had someone who was going to sell me some hens and he backed out.

This year - since I know I love the Golden Comets, I plan to get there as soon as chick days start and pay the extra to get the pullets - I think one of the reason some of mine were so skittish is because they stayed in that bin at TSC so long - and some folks just don't control their kids.. or themselves! Who knows how many people grabbed at them! I want mine before that happens! I am lucky to have a nice big chicken yard - and I can't find any limit in our county's code - so I think as long as my neighbors don't have a problem with it - I can have what I want. So far no predators in the yard either - hoping its because my dog is in there all day long.

I've bought just hens several times. Ranging from $8-$75 each depending on breed, quality, time of year and age. Mostly from OK and MO though. There will probably be some at the Yates Center swap this weekend. What and how many though is anybody's guess.

Dare to dream! I guess no one here wants to sell them - or else I don't know where to look... I've checked craigslist. I just have to hope my boys don't over"work" my hens before I get some more...

Poor girls...

Of course I may get lucky and get a girl who goes broody - but knowing my luck it will be the bantam baby..... she is the only one who hides to lay eggs... oh well... I am just enjoying the ones I have for now - my girls are sweet... and they are ruled by their tummies... and the boys are my challenge - i'm gonna get a decent rooster out of one of them - no matter what! I'm a stubborn one..

POOPS (People of Oklahoma Poultry Swap) in the Spring is a great one if you can make it. BYCers mostly. They're a lot of fun, and ohhh the birds!

Usually I'm looking for specifics, so I go straight for contacting breeders of the breed I'm looking for and go from there. Even if the first one doesn't have what you want, eventually one will or they'll know someone who does.

BR, Golden Comet and BO pullets should be easily purchased from a hatchery I would think. If you can't/don't want to meet the minimum, find someone to go in on it with you.

I didn't pay any attention to where the BO that won at state came from, but there was a guy out of OK at the Inter-State Fair down here that had BOs for sale. Someone in the Okie thread would know how to get in touch with him.
