msjFrizzle, I know the Coles at C Arrow stables. Didn't realize they had chickens, but its been a long time since I've been out there. They helped me finish off my gelding for Western Showmanship years ago. I'd say it's a small world... except that I think nearly everyone around here knows the Cole's!

They have really turned profit on finishing and teaching and selling trail rides with horses. I want the Silver Laced Wynadottes, Barred Plymouth Rocks and the Standard White Crested Polish. But I don't even have a coop yet. That is next! We leave tomorrow for our vacation and when we get back, we'll get serious about building!

I want to thank Chookschic for the kstate infoand having the knowledge I will always aspire to get. I'll be calling up there to get the address and see what they can do. I also found a vet that will do a stool check on the rest of the flock here in wichita. I really am starting to believe it was the heat. At one part of the afternoon the sun is getting under the shade where they like to hang out and can become very hot. We fixed that problem and all the hens seem to be doing well.
ByNatureFarms thanks so much! I did the condition score and I believe there all about a 1, so I'll be working to fatten them up some.
OzawkieBantams you made my day, that was hilarious!
On a different note I went to the Sedgwick county fair and walked through the poultry barn, of course. I was surprised at the variety of polish and banties but on the whole not alot of chickens. It was nice to check out the different breeds even though there were no speckled sussex

My incubators haven't been turned off in a year and half. And I SO need a break from hatching. But when you have eggs you can't use for eating eggs or the chicks are too valuable you just have to hatch. I just wish I could take a vacation from them for a week or so. I guess that is part of having birds. I just hatched another batch this morning of all sorts of birds. I emptied my hatcher to give it a much needed cleaning, and are temporarily holding some eggs in one of the incubators until I can get it done. So far I've had two more chicks hatch since I moved the eggs. I guess you just have to get it done at some point.

HEChicken how do you like your Black Copper Marans? What is the temperment/personality like? I'm thinking of adding a couple next spring.

Here's my personal assessment:
1. They lay a wonderful dark egg.
2. The eggs may often contain blood spots due to the fact that they are so dark this is a trait that has not been candled out.
3. The hens are fairly calm, easy to deal with.
4. I've not had a mean rooster, but I do understant that others have.
5. They are BIG. They eat a lot.
6. The hens often go broody. I've got one that just hatched a chick, and two sitting in a roll out nest, trying to hatch eggs that roll out from under them.

7. I notice more feather picking with my marans than with any of my other breeds.
8. All of my marans seem to be very healthy and robust.
9. The eggs can be harder to hatch than some breeds and sometimes take an extra day or so.

I would say if you want some, go ahead and add them to your flock. Your personal experience with them might be different that what others experience. I plan to keep some over the years. I love the dark eggs and plan to mix a few with my ameraucanas to get some "olive eggers."

Are your Faverolles bantam or LF? I just had an inquiry from a fellow who wants some LF around here and I'm down to just bantams.

I know I haven't been in this forum for quite a while -- but -- I think I need some help.
I've had 2 hens for over 1 and a half years -- lost one the other night ..... My lonely little hen is almost lost without her partner.
I think it'd be easier to give her away then it would be to get a friend for her. My pen is small and don't think I can separate it to bring in a new hen. Besides that, I don't even know where to get another hen. She won't be easy to catch, but I think it is do-able.
Bottom line; does anyone want a leghorn hen ?? Or help me to know how to introduce one hen to one hen. I've read alot about introducing hens to older flocks, etc.. but nothing about a one on one (probably doesn't happen much)
