Consolidated Kansas

HI everyone! I'm from Wichita, ks and I'm so glad I come across this thread! Just recently a possum took my daughter's best friend away. He was a Malaysian Serama. For days my daughter has been waiting for him to meet her on our back porch. and i'm heart broken to see her in this condition as well as losing our beloving pet, Rocky. I can't get my daughter to cheer up. and I was wondering.. Anyone..in Kansas is selling this kind of breed? or knows where I can get one? getting one would be great. two would be better. i dont mind the limits, I just want to have my daughter smiling again. please help.. Thanks guys..

I'm originally from the Salina area but have been here (Hiawatha) for about 5 years now. Welcome to BYC!

So sorry about your losses, folks.

I've had a rough week and lost my oldest hen to an eagle/hawk-neighbor saw it and says the work they're doing on the dam is causing eagles to be looking for alternate food.

I then lost a lovely FBCM cockerel because he didn't make it inside and hubby didn't see that, so a raccoon got him, and then I lost a young Orp cockerel yesterday to sudden death- it looks like he may have broken his neck.

Nice to see the new folks on here!

I'll have Silkie eggs available in a couple of weeks, and might be persuaded to hatch for those without incubators...but I'll have to promise hubby I won't keep a single one!!

I'm off to the farm now...can't take a fourth day of loss, so I'm feeling apprehensive!

Welcome to the newcomers. We are really happy to have some new people. There's a great group here with a wealth of knowledge.
Chooks is our resident authority on lots of chick matters. She's got tons of experience and probably been here longer than the rest of us. She's always a great source for information. but the combined group is an asset. Each of us have our knowledge base to help you with any problems or just be a sounding board.
Bamaproud, you sound like me. I have no idea how many birds I have, and the only time I count is when I am selling a large amount of them. Just the same I love them all.
Seramaslovers, yes I have Seramas. Tons of them. I would be more than happy to sell you one or many. CHEAP What color and what sex was your daughter's pet? I have lots of colors, lots of sizes and even have chicks every now and then. I'm trying not to hatch but once in a while I can't resist throwing a few eggs in the incubator. I'm not super close to Wichita. I was just there last week. I would of course like you and your daughter to come up and pick out her own bird but if you PM me we might be able to work something out. Hawkeye lives outside of Wichita so maybe you two could take a day trip together or something. We can work something out.
Rittert, can your wife get unemployment until one of you finds a job? You have the worst luck.
Justin, That sounds like a nice deal but is the guy with the pasture going to provide the fencing etc. I would be super worried about predators. Do you have a guard dog or something to protect the birds? I don't mean to rain on your parade. It's just that with all the dry weather the predators have been worse this year than ever. There just isn't much food for them. Would the birds have a coop for night protection and to lay in? Is there electricity available so you can keep a water source from freezing? I'm a worrier by nature so I tend to worry for everyone else. My chickens free range so I am a total advocate of it but they are right here where my dogs and myself can watch out for them. There is just so many things to consider.

One more thing I failed to mention. It seems like there have been more losses than usual lately. I am very sorry that any of you have lost your birds. Its such a sad thing to put your time and attention into them and then have something happen to them. I do hope that things improve for all of you.

It's that time of year. All the predators are at their highest numbers for the year. All the spring babies are maturing and venturing out on their own and are hungry! It's like this every year. Wildlife is at its highest number in the fall, then the number gradually dwindles over the winter until they all start to reproduce again in the spring and summer. Mother nature at work.

I eliminated one predator last night. I was coming home from work about 3:30 this morning. I saw something run into the road and didn't want to hit it because I thought it was a skunk. I hit it anyway, but it turned out to be a possum. I'm sure he will be food for the large turkey vulture crowd we have around here.

Wouldn't that be nice if the Wichita group could carpool or caravan to your place! I'd be willing to bet Hawkeye couldn't leave your place without a couple seramas.

Ivywoods, we are close enough to be neighbors.I love that area of Kansas and the outskirts. Any places you can recommend we go and see? Where is the best place to get your feed and supplies?

ChookChick,Where are you located?Any pictures of your silkies?

I get my feed either at Orscheln's in Falls City, NE, or at Hartter's Feed and Seed in Sabetha. There is nothing available that I'm aware of in Hiawatha.

As far as supplies, I get them all over. I order from Smith's poultry supply, buy stuff at Orscheln's or at Tractor Supply in St. Joseph, MO. Most of my feeders and cages I have built myself or bought at farm auctions.

What town are you located near?
