Consolidated Kansas

Thanks everyone! I love GPs, but don't have the time to train one well. It's the female Basenji who just is the problem. She is a ton of work to keep civil.

ChooksChick, I agree, I also have quite a variety & I enjoy seeing all the different colors & breeds running around my yard. They all have different personalities too. I had to laugh at one of my Barred Rock hens this afternoon. I went out to open the door & check on everybody & she was on the nest getting ready to lay. She made this growling sound at me like get out, I'm busy in here! I got such a kick out of that. One of the Barred Rocks, poor hen has been laying HUGE double yolker eggs several times lately. I told my DH that I feel sorry for her, that's like having a 10 pound baby to us.

Tarja-I agree. If you are just wanting some chickens for a small layer flock for your own use, get a mix. They all have different characteristics, and negative and positive attributes. You will (hopefully) enjoy the differences. I love having the different varieties, and I like having a mix of egg colors in my egg basket.

The unfortunate thing for me is I also sell eggs, and most of my customers ONLY want jumbo white eggs.

I can't sell my marans eggs or my ameraucana eggs. I'd love to include them in my layer flock, but it just isn't practical for me, so I only have them for breeding and I use those eggs myself.

I agree, Chooks. I have a Golden Campine, a gold laced Wyandotte, 2 Delawares, 5 EE's (and no two of them are at all the same color), a Welsumer, and a buff orpington. They are all different colors (almost) and all lay different colored eggs (except that I now am getting 4-5 green eggs a day). A pretty yard and a pretty egg basket.

If you aren't planning on breeding or selling hatching eggs, you may as well get a mix of breeds. I have a home flock for eating eggs that is one of everything!

I like seeing the varied chooks in my yard, and each has its own lovely characteristics.

The pups will be purebred. My male GP was working very hard at keeping the lab away. Since the deed is done I think I may go ahead and pen my female and just let my male in for a while the next few days. Better safe than sorry.
Tarja I have both mixed and pure bred chickens. I hope by spring I will have only purebred chicks and use the mixes to lay for eating eggs. If you need chicks or pullets, others here or myself can most certainly help you out. People will be scrambling in spring to get pullets because they don't want to wait for eggs. Better plan to start early or you could pay premium price.
I do have cochins and they keep their feet remarkably clean. If it is muddy they might get muddy but somehow they clean right up.

Well, I'm starting to feel like myself again now. I haven't been able to drive the last few days, so I've been at home. But last night my mom took me and my oldest kid out to make gingerbread houses at a benifit. I was dizzy the whole time and had a hard time focusing. This really knocked me off my butt. I'm still a bit looping today- sort of feel like my head is disconnected, but not aching or hurting at all. Still a sore throat, but thank goodness that is the least of my worries now. And even at that, my throat feels a LOT better than it did.

I've been putting my babies in the horse stall. They are happy to be out of their brooder. Although, we had coyotes circling the other night, so I'm going to have to be very careful to bring them back in before it gets too dark. My little 6 pound Pomeranian and my Shih Tzu took after a coyote and I nearly had a heart attack as I was yelling and screaming at them to come back and the coyote took off running and then turned around and waited for a minute- it looked like she was waiting for my dogs to catch up with her. I kept yelling and the coyote took off again. They have been really bad lately. This was in my front yard BTW. And my little dogs are idiots. Other than laying around and trying to recover, that is about my only excitement.

Who was asking about chicken breeds? You can see my list of birds in my siggy, and it turns out that my barred plymouth rocks are my friendly birds- they are happy to see me and jump on me. They come when I bend over and talk to them. They want to be held. I often bring one of them in and watch tv with her- she just loves attention. My wyandottes are okay, but not near as friendly. The polish are flightly and silly and screech when you pick them up. They are still adorable, but not a "lap bird".

Hawkeye, I'm glad you're starting to feel better, take care of yourself!

I've got a sick puppy this morning, got to get her to the Vet, see you all later.

That sounds like more fun. Kids and I looked at My Pet Chickens pictures and found 18 we like. This might be a problem. Not sure we need 18 chickens.

So good to see you back on here, Hawkeye. Get well soon.
Well, I took a couple pics of my dogs. It's hard to take their pictures because they won't hold still and my female is kind of afraid of the camera. Duh!
I just made another hundred and forty dollars off birds. That makes me feel so much better. I have lots more I need to sell.
I'm still rooster heavy.
It is so cold today. The forecast is SO WRONG

Okay so here are some pictures I took of my dogs today. Not the greatest in the world. I tried to get both of them in a full body shot but they come up to me so fast I can't click it in time.
First here is my male, Fluff
