He was really proud of that, so I know it is Butterball he was working with. They helped subsidize his first barn... I don't know about the other 4. But I'd guess so if they did on his first barn. Anyway, the upside for Butterball is that they can claim that it's not "them" injuring the turkeys, but their contractors. I'm going to go out on a limb and say that Butterball is well aware of the barn practices with their contractors, though. It's how they got into the business, after all.

Made a quick run into town for allergy shots for my oldest. Nice change of scenery for the kids. Time to go back to school. Going to the zoo or the park isn't really a fun thing right now when it's this cold. Although, this day is nicer than most! I did toy with the idea of taking them to the park, but then thought about myself freezing on the bench watching them.

oh- and I checked over on the Oklahoma "chicken stock" thing and they said it's basically a swap meet. Not limited to chickens-- but all fowl and water fowl. Plus vendors selling homemade things. Sounds like fun.

I expect there will be literally hundreds of baby chicks to choose from, and there will likely be trios, quads, and larger groups of birds offered by breeders and chicken enthusiasts from all around Oklahoma. I will contact our local television stations before the event, and I'm gong to visit local feed stores and animal-related businesses as well to see if they would like to donate items for our raffle or join the fun and set up a table or booth. We have roughly 200 spaces (6' X 8' with concrete floors and cattle panel sides) for people to set up birds and cages. The building we're using is a show barn, so the areas are well organized and I'm making a map of who brought what a week before event day so that buyers and sellers and lookie-loos can find the people selling Silkies and Show Girls, the bee-keeper who brought fresh honey, and the artist who has note cards and original artwork for sale. We will have a raffle to pay for the rental of the building. A Girl Scout troop is going to run a small concession stand. We plan to have several 30-minute demonstrations/informational talks, and there will be static displays to allow late arrivals or families who like to "learn on their own" to view the demonstration information at their leisure. We have volunteers for demonstrations/informational talks about capons, feeder insects, and showing chickens, and I'm sure that list will grow before June 16, 2012. Cages of birds for the Pay the Seller Poultry Sale will be lined up starting at 11:00. The sale begins at 12:00 noon. Buyers need to bring cash and cages as most of the cages do not sell with the birds. This is a facilitated sale, not an auction, so cages will be marked with reserve prices. There's no commission, but tipping the guy volunteering his time to run the sale is going to earn you brownie points and warm fuzzy feelings for doing a nice thing.

I'll drop by later in the week and post some pictures of the show barn so that you can get an idea of the facility. It's going to be a lot of fun.
 
I sent a message to the Ok link and then came back here and read your info. Thanks. You answered many of my questions. It sounds like you are doing a great job of organizing. Can't wait to hear more.
 
On another subject I heard peeping when I went out to feed the Seramas. One of the hens has hatched a baby chick and has a couple more eggs in there to hatch. I imagine there will be several more hatching from the other broodies out there. She is up in one of the higher nests and somehow the baby will have to get down to eat and drink. I thought I would leave her alone for now to hatch the other eggs but I am going to have to do something or the baby won't be able to get to water. I hate taking it away from her but in these circumstances I might have to. I so wish I had places to put all the broody mamas so they could safely raise their own chicks.

I believe her first due date is the 15th. So it is closer to 2 weeks. DH moved the big dog house today and is working on getting the kennel set up. I need to get it cleaned out cause the chickens have been hanging out in there. I'll put up a board to keep the puppies from crawling out. She keeps taking naps in the old garage where all the young pullets stay. I also have to block off under the front porch so she won't go there to have pups. She started having her first litter there then moved to the old garage. I had to move her and the pups to the big dog house. I hope she just goes there once I have it all set up for her.
I also need to go visit the vet this week and make sure I have all my ducks in a row for her.
 
Danz, that's too bad they can't keep their chicks, but it doesn't sound like you can do much about it right now. Safer to put them in the brooder. I think the Oakie sale sounds neat-- free to sell and free to auction! I like that idea! I bet people would take those seramas off your hands! They are cute!

Okay.... so remember last night when I was jumping around all excited that my chickens FINALLY put themselves all into the coop on their own?? Yeah.. that joy was short lived. Tonight, I went out there with a flashlight to double check under the coop and there were 8 chickens under there!!! I had to scramble around under there over and over dragging out protesting chickens! ARGH!!! What happened?!?!?!

Anyway, that was a PITA. I may go out there earlier tomorrow and coax them closer to the ramp with BOSS and see if I can get them up the ramp and into the coop before they make a run for it. Sigh.

My nerves are shot, I have a headache. Time to have something a little stronger than soda... hehe!! Darned job thing got me all in a twist.
