I have not shipped birds or had anything shipped to me other than baby chicks from a hatchery, so I only know what I have read about boxes & such on here. I know the boxes aren't cheap & neither is the shipping. But then shipping for anything is expensive any more.

Hawkeye, I did find a frame kit that will fit my cage in the garage & a tray, so I guess I'll have to order that now. At least when I get that I'll have these cages all fixed up so it's easier to clean things. I doubt I use the bigger one for chicks, I'll probably use that one for rabbits, but I will have the two smaller stacking ones for the chicks if I need them later on & you can stack up to 4 high, so I could add 2 more on later if I want. I went & picked up the other hutch in Ark City this afternoon & it's still sitting in the back of the truck for DH to help me unload tomorrow, he will be thrilled I'm sure. It's not that it was too heavy, it's just too awkward for me to get out of there alone. I tried, but I was afraid I would break the legs off trying to get it out by myself. There is a hutch part & then they built a run onto the front of it. It's not nearly as heavy duty as the other one I got, but with a little work it will be of some use. I do like that the top of the hutch is on hinges so it just lifts up to clean or get the rabbits out or whatever. I could kick myself though, he had another cage with a tray that I forgot to ask him about & if he still has it I'm going to see if he will just bring it to work with him & meet up with my DH since I just found out they work at the same place, what a coincidence. That will save me another trip to Ark City. It seems like I'm driving down there a lot lately, at least it's only 10 miles down there.

Danz, I can't wait to see more pics as these puppies grow. Seeing them makes me want another one, but I can't have one I have my hands full with the two pups I have now. When I got back the first time today with the car I noticed Lily especially was covered with weed seeds & stuff stuck in her fur, so who knows what the two of them had been doing while I was gone. Lily always comes running to me when I come out, but Jasmine kind of watches me from afar for the most part. She is friendly, but more aloof than Lily, she will come usually if I call them, especially if I have something for them, but just doesn't come bouncing up to me like Lily does. Lily has this thing she does, it's hard to describe, but it's almost like she's hugging your leg. She would hug you standing on her hind feet it I would let her, but I'm trying to teach her not to jump on me or anybody else, she has a bad habit of it & I don't want a 100 lb dog jumping on people. They are growing so fast it's unbelievable, I picked Jasmine up the other day & I almost couldn't lift her any more, that's how heavy they're getting. They will be 4 months old in 11 days & they're already big girls.

I got my car back & they really did do a nice job on it, I almost hated to drive it down our road because I knew it was going to get dusty again, but at least it has wax on it now to protect it some. They even did the wheels & tires too. Now we need to get the leather seats all cleaned & all the interior spiffed up. DH is kind of dragging his feet with buying the car, I think he is kind of nervous about it. I'm the one that ordered & bought the only other new car we have bought & I negotiated the price online. I sold my car at the time outright, so I didn't have a trade-in. We'll have to see what the dealers say they will give us & if they try to cheat us on it we may just end up selling it ourselves too. It's too nice of a car to have them get it for a steal. We have always gotten a lot of compliments on that car.

I hope you all have read about SOPA & PIPA & sent email & signed the Google petition. Those things take so little time & our reps in KS need to hear from us that we don't like what they're doing. It will just be the pits if this site gets shut down because they can't comply with what the government is wanting them to do. If this thing passes it could very well happen & then where will we all be? I for one will truly miss chatting with you all every day & all the valuable information that is shared here on this whole site. I think it would be a terrible shame if that happens.

It's good to know about he npip forms, danz. I'd like to get my birds certified or at leased have my flock certified P/T clean but I'm not sure how I'd do it. I'm going to turn my chickens over so fast and I'm not sure I can get my coturnix certified plus there are about 65 other birds (Chickens, ducks, and a guinea) on the property that don't belong to me. I'd really like to beable to ship out some of those quail eggs. My math based on the facts I've read say that I should be getting 60 eggs a week once I get them rolling and I only plan on setting once a month or so.

Before you think about shipping birds, you should read the thread describing the nightmare ChooksChick endured over received shipped birds. It really made me feel like I would not ever want to either ship or receive shipped birds. I've received chicks in the mail but I'm not even sure I want to do that again, and shipping adult birds is a whole 'nother story.

rittert, if you're talking shipping eggs, then you have to figure in packing materials into the picture too because they have to be cushioned well or the people on the other end aren't going to be happy with you.

For shipping birds, I usually go to Boxesforbirds.com or http://poultry2.tripod.com/id3.html

I generally try to make sure there's enough room for them to lay down and I put in apples, cucumbers and crumbles. I make sure they are accustomed to those foods for a week prior to shipping so they don't hesitate to eat them, as that's their source of water during the travel. I put shavings on top of a layer of paper towels. The PT keep the shavings from sliding around so much. I also always treat my birds with ivermectin as soon as I know they're going to be sure I don't send them with even one mite or louse.

I weigh them by weighing myself and then weight myself while holding them in the box and subtracting the first with just me. I then buy the shipping label online, as it is much cheaper to do so. I then print it out and tape it to one vertical side and write the destination address and phone number on both wide sides and also my address and phone number. I put the recipient's phone number on top twice with, "Call upon arrival."

Hope this helps! You can ship multiple birds together even if they don't get along. Either use a piece of cardboard (and GOOD taping) as a divider or tape multiple boxes together. They will accept them as one box, but YOU MUST put the address and return address on both boxes and phone numbers all around. I put an extra copy of the print label on the second box where it sandwiches up against the first box. This way it's only showing if the boxes become separated, so it doesn't confuse anyone.

In other news, I've decided to sell my d'Uccle flock. There are at least 8 hens/pullets and two roos. They are Lavender and Porcelain, which can be mated as two separate colors as quads or together, producing Isabels, Lavenders, and Porcelains.

They are very nice, and all are under a year save 2 of the Lavender hens, who are just over a year.

PM me if you are interested. I'll likely list them on the forum in a few days, but I'd just as soon they not get shipped, if possible.

Great advice, Renee on the shipping! I guess the shipping will vary depending on how much the birds plus the food weigh in the box? I had my roo and then my two pullets shipped separately to me-- the two pullets cost me right about the same as my roo. But he is BIG compared to them! The two pullets were put in with no divider-- but they are super docile and really love each other. Just wondering-- the boxes my birds were sent in are a lot cheaper than the "boxesforbirds" site... is there something you like a lot better about the boxes you use? Mine had the biofilters on them, too-- but they are shaped differently than the ones you suggested. Great info!

So, Sorry I’ve been MIA these past couple days. Killer crud hath taken me over. I work in the ER, so I knew that I’d eventually succumb to one of these things people are bringing in every day. In catching up with everyone:

Danz – Those have got to be some of the cutest puppies ever!! We’ll be looking for a pup in the future, but that will have to wait till my old man dog goes over the rainbow bridge. He’s 13 years old, which is old for a black lab, and we’ve been surprised that he’s survived these last two years – but he’s hanging on. Once he’s gone, we’ll be getting another pup as a friend for our American Bulldog. Darwin, who is 3 yrs old, is still a pup himself. I hand raised him from 9 days old. His mama passed away while giving birth and the owner couldn’t handle hand raising the 8 pups herself. It’s a great experience hand-raising a dog, but I really hope that Marshmallow pulls through that you don’t have to do that! - Since I came into the forums late in the game, what breed are the pups?

Ivy – Have you heard about the test results yet? I hope they don’t keep you waiting through the weekend either. We are all pulling for good news!! And WHOOOO on the Rosecomb egg!!!

Hawkeye – WOOOHOOO on the egg!! I’m glad you finally got one, that means there are many more to come!!

Chickmama – I did send out several emails about SOPA yesterday as well as encouraged several others to do so! This whole thing just pisses me off so I won’t rant – that’s what I did in the emails. LOL

Chooks – Wish I had the coop set up or I might take you up on those birds. They are beautiful from the google pics I found.

Now, a bit about me – other than the crud. I’m really excited to learn that the city of Lawrence is now allowing potbelly pigs as pets. I’ve always wanted one, but now that I’m reading about them – I’m wondering if they would be more work than a new puppy. I know I haven’t even started with the chicks and think that it would be a couple years before I’d seriously consider getting one, but I’m just excited that I now even have that option!
I am also getting the spring itch really bad. Although the weather has been so great, I can’t wait till I can get outside and do more yard work. The yard in the house we moved into is beautifully landscaped, but we moved in the end of October and with moving, then the holidays right after – I never got a chance to do any real yard work. I did get some plants started indoors this week though. Got some celery, broccoli, onions, and cabbage started and surprisingly the seeds are already sprouting after just three days!

Good morning everyone!

I am excited, Ivy's and my older sister is coming to visit, and in tow, she has our father. Wanted to go out west and see them, but that is about the time the big winter storm hit out there, well, I chickened out. Besides, it was warmer here.

Chooks, hope you can get your birds sold, I had the millie fluer color for a long time, but got out of them.

rittert, while treating your birds, you might as well go ahead and give each of the infected birds 5 to 7 drops of ivomec orally. That should help kill the mites faster, especially the ones that are very deep under the scales. Gets rid of all the other things that they might have also.

Well, my news for the day is I also have a rosecomb pipping.

This baby is from my newest trio.
These birds the breeder shipped to me, wants to buy chicks back from me!! They are such wonderful birds. There is going to be a show March 3rd in Pryor Ok. I am going to enter some of my birds, and see how I do. Never showed at a big show before, really think it is going to be fun. If I do well enough, I may try to go to Sedilia and maybe Hutchinson. I encourage all of you if you have never gone to a poultry show, ya gotta do it. So much to see, and most breeders are very nice and will answer your questions. It is so fun to see birds all pretty and showing them selves like diamonds.
Not much going on here, so I better go get something done.
