I wouldn't use the permethrin, but you can get a bottle of the pour-on for $15 at TSC.

If you can only get the injectable ivermectin (ivomec, iver-on,etc.), that's fine, because you can give it to them orally- just a few drops. Sorry I'm so brief lately- I'm on my phone and still waiting on a part for my computer.

oh, thanks!! That is FAR more reasonable! I can do that! TSC is totally out of my way, but I do drive by it once a week when we go to piano lessons. I can buy it then! I'm assuming you are still talking about the Ivermectin pour on.

Premier Farm Supply in Topeka had it last year in 50's. I can't say for now, but they are on the Internet, so you could call if you want to go that far.

Speaking of diatomaceous earth, does anyone know where you can still buy a 50 lb bag of it? Bluestem in Emporia went to a lousy gallon jug and quit carrying the big bags. I really need to buy the 50 pound bags to do much good around here.

Okay, so craziness!!! I went out to put grain out in the barrels today and feed the horses a bit early. GOOD thing, too! Sometimes, I swear these things (like time changes) happen for a reason. My gelding has injured his eye! Darned horse!! It's weeping and swelled shut. So after I got the grain put up, I brought out hot water and scrubbed down his eye and cleaned it all out. Boy was he NOT happy. Then thank goodness I am a horse pharmacy here... (whew) I always keep eye antibiotics on hand. So after cleaning it all out, I got the antibiotics in the eye. He's in so much pain, that after I washed it, he just stood there rigid and let me apply the medicine. Hopefully the antibiotics will get me thru the weekend so I don't have to call in the emergency vet. I'm going to pray it's not a puncture and just a scratch. I opened it up as much as I could and didn't see anything obvious. Trying to calm down now... eye injuries are often really bad. Just going to hope this isn't anything too serious.

OH, I wish those pinless peepers would get here NOW. Those darned barred rocks are soooo mean.

I plan to use the stacking cages for breeder pairs. They are big enough for one pair of large birds or a trio or so of my smaller birds. I just got them all put together, and I think it is going to work great! It looks like it will work better than I thought. It will be so nice to just be able to pull out the poop pans and dump and clean them. I plan to order some vinyl coated wire for the bottoms. The wire that is in there is a little wide for my bantams feet, and so the 1" coated vinyl should work great.

I got the stock tank brooder set up and the largest chicks got moved out. I didn't have time to work on the other brooders at all. I guess that will have to wait till Monday. DH was working on the pickup in the shop so there just wasn't room for me to work in there, plus I'm sure he wouldn't have appreciated me getting sawdust all over.

I just had some more chicks hatch. They all are doing well except one. It has badly spraddled legs and not only are they spraddled but they stick way out front and his feet are curled. I'm going to get DH to hold him while I hobble him. I hope I can get his legs back underneath him. Usually I can, but this poor little guy looks pretty bad.

Hawkeye you really don't want to use something with permethrin in it. Permethrin causes damage to the nervous system. I once bathed a bunch of cats with fleas in it because it was what the vet said they used, but found out that they have to be rinsed immediately after the fact.....too late. It paralyzed several and I had to have a couple put down that wouldn't come out of it. I will NEVER again use that on an animal. If you put a drop on a chicken and it absorbs it it will probably die and it's eyes will be watching you because that will be all they can move. I cried for days.Stay with the tried and safe. I still use permethrin but only to kill white flies, aphids, and mites on plants.
I use the pine tar on any chicken wounds. It makes a mess but the other chickens won't peck at it and it helps them heal. Great stuff if you can get past the smell and the mess.
I counted live chicks I've hatched in the last 3 weeks. There are 79 of them. It will be interesting to keep the count going. I have a few more in the bator to hatch today.

Thanks Ivy. It's that shipping that kills me. I tried calling premier and they had closed 7 minutes earlier . Maybe I'll remember it on Monday. It normally runs about $30 for a 50 pound bag if you can find the darned stuff.
I got some chicks moved out to the brooder earlier. I need to go move a cage out and separate my white Seramas but my back is killing me.
I also just got a notice I had been rejected for life insurance after paying for three months of it. I guess I'd better not die soon. Irritates me. They used my spine as the reason not to insure me. It's not going to kill me. It may cripple me, but that isn't a death sentence. I got cancelled by the life insurance I'd had for years back in October and had applied for some other.
Obviously these people don't understand I am not done. I have just begun to really enjoy my life and don't intend for it to end soon.
It really makes me feel like crying. I don't want my kids to not have anything from me when I die. It's all about them anyway. With my condition most people assume I am wheelchair bound and unable to care for myself. But the mind has wonderful power and most people can't tell there is anything wrong with me most of the time.
I've always been one who can mask sickness from about anyone. I work through pain and overcome it's limitations. I guess I've spent enough of my life sick that I just deal with sickness and pain at a higher level than most people.
I guess if I kick off they can sell chickens to pay for my funeral. ......Just like the good ole days.

Okay, I'm really excited this afternoon and have to share. Last August I had a hen go broody (remember those triple digit temps we had for most of that month????) I didn't have a rooster so she was sitting on infertile eggs. I couldn't find any eggs for pick up that were of breeds I want to add, and in the high temps last summer didn't want to risk shipped eggs. So - I placed an ad on CL and a local guy let me take a dozen of his fertile eggs that I knew would be barnyard mutts. He did let me have the 5 green eggs he had collected that day, which was so nice of him, but he also said since he had no idea who the daddy's were, just because the eggs were green, didn't mean I was going to get green egg layers out of them. Ok - got it.

So we started with 5 green eggs, and on day 10 she kicked an egg out knowing it was bad and naturally it was a green egg. The last 4 went into lockdown but at least two of them didn't hatch. 7 chicks hatched total and I eagerly looked for any EE signs among the chicks but they all just looked pretty ordinary. Oh no, wait - there was one with green legs. But he turned out to be a boy so I was fairly certain I wasn't going to get green eggs from him. Oh well - I knew it was a gamble all along, right?

Of the hatch, I was left with 3 little pullets. One looks like a Production Red, and the other two look like BO crosses. No green legs. No muffs. No beards. Single combs. Sigh. More light brown eggs in my future.

So today I went into the coop and found...a pretty little GREEN pullet egg! I couldn't believe my luck! The pullet who laid it is one of the BO crosses. Anyway, I know for those of you who already have rainbow egg baskets, this is probably pretty humdrum but since I was not expecting it, I am so excited today! DH and DD agreed it was pretty but really didn't understand why I am so excited. I figured you guys might.
