Consolidated Kansas

Danz, I can't wait to see the new pics of the puppies with their eyes open! I'll bet they're just getting cuter by the day. My two pups are growing so fast it's not funny, it seems like they're growing right before my eyes. They will be 4 months old tomorrow. I really think Lily has learned some lessons from her punishment for getting in the coop. She seems like she wants to please me & has kind of been showing me that when I go out to feed them. She usually was the one trying to knock the can out of my hand with the food in it, but she has been sitting for me & waiting for me to put the food in her bowl. That's kind of a nice development, now if I could get her to stop jumping on people, we're still working on that. DH said he will be glad when they both get through their silly puppy stage & yeah I kind of will too. They're cute pups, but it will be nice too when they mature a little & settle down & it will be even nicer when they start doing their job.

Patricia, yes it is kind of hard to follow this thread sometimes. I have to back up to where I read last so I can figure out what's going on. If you miss getting on here one day you miss several pages.

I don't know if this will help, but what I do to keep up, is when I am logged in and go to the forums, I go to the "new posts" and click on it, then in the drop down that appears, I select the one that says "I've posted". It shows me all the threads to which I've previously posted, that have new replies. Then I click on the little icon in the far left column and it takes me to the first new post since I last checked. That way, whether there is one new post or 25, I can read in order from the first unread (for me) post.

I basically do the same thing but I just go to the where am I, where are you section and click the little green arrow on the far left of the Kansas thread and it takes me to the last post I read. If the are no new posts the arrow won't be green.

There are so many ways to do everything here, it seems. I never want to assume anyone else is getting here the same way I am.

tntblake - what side of Wichita are you on?

Hey all! Shana the Crazy Chicken Lady from Marion here. Right now I have Buff Orpies, RI Reds, a black Bearded Silkie, a Barred Bantam Cochin, and a Bantam Sultan. I can't wait for my new chicks this year--BC Marans, Welsummers, a Barnevelder, SL Wyandottes, plus Ameraucanas, Black Stars, and possibly a starter batch of broilers. Pleased to meet you all :)

We got into the chicken thing more or less by accident and all our chickens have come from the few breeds available at Orschlein and from a friend whose kids raised some for 4-H. They lay a lovely variety of tan and brown colored eggs, sometimes speckled. My SIL used to get all these gorgeous blue and green eggs when she had chickens. HEChicken, I totally understand your excitement! When we decide to add a couple more chickens, I'm gonna hold out for EEs.

Danz, I'm sorry to hear about your insurance problems. I hope you can find something soon. I have some chronic health problems myself, and it sucks to have to fight for every little thing.

Let me the first, but most definitely not the last!, to welcome you! I read your blog the other night and it's some good stuff! I think you'll fit right in here with the group! :)

So today I went into the coop and found...a pretty little GREEN pullet egg! I couldn't believe my luck! The pullet who laid it is one of the BO crosses. Anyway, I know for those of you who already have rainbow egg baskets, this is probably pretty humdrum but since I was not expecting it, I am so excited today! DH and DD agreed it was pretty but really didn't understand why I am so excited. I figured you guys might.

I really do understand your excitement!! When my little japanese cross pullets started laying "blue" eggs, I couldn't believe it at first. I took another good look at the little rooster in the pen with the japanese hens. ( Yes, I am a beginner with chickens and those were the first chickens I owned). And all of the signs were there, he is a bantam EE. I got them as a mixed flock from someone that was moving. The rooster is pretty, with red, blue colors. But those little blue eggs from the japanese, and seabright cross pullets are still a bright spot in my days. They are so tiny and pretty. Oh, and so are the pullets.

Hawkeye you really don't want to use something with permethrin in it. Permethrin causes damage to the nervous system. I once bathed a bunch of cats with fleas in it because it was what the vet said they used, but found out that they have to be rinsed immediately after the fact.....too late. It paralyzed several and I had to have a couple put down that wouldn't come out of it. I will NEVER again use that on an animal. If you put a drop on a chicken and it absorbs it it will probably die and it's eyes will be watching you because that will be all they can move. I cried for days.Stay with the tried and safe. I still use permethrin but only to kill white flies, aphids, and mites on plants.

Danz, I am sorry you had that experience. It hurts so much.

I wonder if that was in the product a lady I knew had used on her cats. She raised cats and worked for a vet, so she had knowledge of cats. She used a dip (I think) that was new on the market at that time (years ago) and the cats had a horrible reaction to it also. What I remember included hair loss and death. She was so upset.
