Consolidated Kansas

IVY, good luck on the appt. in Topeka, I hope you get help and his health improves.

danz and hawkeye thanks for the ideas and we will keep those in mind.

chooks I was shocked to find them I was not expecting them till maybe late Feb but really march- It's the weather.. There have been 6 so far 2 broken. like she laid them from the roost so go figure. Maybe cuz I didn't have the nest box all spiffed up? she is laying now in the box . If I remember right they lay 6 eggs and rest a bit but Last year was so funny cuz I tried to let her set them(too hot), so her laying was way off. I have a purple pair that is 2 and a blue pair about 3. I need to separate them had planned on doing that next month.

I'm not sure who asked about their egg size but it is like a goose egg about not quite that big maybe between a turkey egg and a goose egg.. I have them because I think they are pretty. I sell the eggs and hatch some to sell in hopes to help pay for the feed.

Here is the first of the baby goats. I was so glad she had them when we were home last night. no more expected till mid march. We could not keep this little pygmy in what she didn't crawl through she went over. so sadly the young boer buck bred her- really had me worried but all turned out great..

Love the baby goats. We have mostly boer and nubian with a little spanish and savannah mixed in. We've got a couple that are getting pretty close. I just hope they DON'T have them while we are in Topeka or something! One will be a first time momma and I worry about them a little more.

Hello and welcome to all the newbies! Wow! There are so many folks from the Wichita area. I lived in Wichita for 10 years while I was going through school and for a while after that. I liked Wichita but being a country girl at heart I don't miss the bigger cities. Welcome to everyone.

I got my first silver duckwing old english egg this morning! Yippee! I just love the pair I have. They are beautiful. The little pullet is so funny. She is so friendly but she is the messiest bird in my flock! She is so wild about the way she eats. She practially comes through the wire when I approach with feed. She acts like she hasn't had food for weeks. Then when I fill her bowl she digs and scoops and throws it everywhere. Sometimes it seems like she is throwing it back at me! I have the pair in the stacking pens I built, and the feed and water pans attach to the outside of the front door. She threw so much food out I turned hers around and put it on the INSIDE of the pen. That way when she throws it out it lands in the pen and she and her pal can clean it all up later. She is the funniest little thing.

I also had another little rosecomb hatch. They are such cute, tiny little things.

Well I sure have been enjoying this wonderful weather. Unbelievable for January, huh? SOOOO much different than last year when we were actually snowed in 5 different times!

I think I have everything taken care of so that they should be okay if I dont make it home until tomorrow or something. Can't stay gone longer than that, but I can run home and do what I need to do and then go back if I need to.

Catch ya'all later.

& the Consolidated Kansas thread. I'm originally from Wichita, but moved from there in 1976. I didn't go too far though because I lived in Derby for 23 years until I moved to Winfield 13 years ago. There are lots of friendly people here & loads of information if you have time to read. You can do a search on BYC for different topics & get lots of info. Feel free to ask any questions you have & if somebody here doesn't know they can direct you to where you can find the answer. I personally like the Storey's Guide to Raising Chickens if you can get a copy of that, there is a lot of good information in there.

IVY, let us know how things go in Topeka & I hope you get some answers. Congrats on the new chicks!

Justhatchin, congrats on the new goat babies too!

Well we're off to work on the gate for the chicken run, I hope this keeps those pups out of there. I'll let you all know how it goes. If you haven't been to the Kansas Poultry Swap page lately on FB, we're now over 150 members,

Well only my luck! We apparently had some wind during the night. The 10 x 10 kennel I had separated guineas in was lifted up and flipped completely on it's top. I had a tarp over the top and down the north side so it lifted the whole thing and moved it.I had banded these girls to sell and they were out running free in the yard! Unbelievably I was able to catch them.I got a lot of physical exercise to say the least. They kept migrating back to their old pen. So I just threw them in back the big pen when I caught them. I will have to have a major catch before they go to their new home. At least they are marked so I know which ones to take. I was going to move them today but decided I was hurting too bad to do so. I guess I got the exercise whether I intended to or not.

Yikes! That's awful, but I'm glad they didn't get hurt. You need some of those big screw-stake-auger things they use to tie-down swing-sets. A quick fix would be to chain a bunch of cinder blocks to the bottom of the thing. Sorry you had to do all that work again!

It was just a temporary pen we set up and I was making use of it. I need to get some more pens built soon so I'm not at the mercy of the weather. Time, energy and money are the evils!
I need to run to Topeka today but the weather is just too nice to want to go.

Hawkeye, Dose it look excactly like you last on as far as body and head shape, beak length, those kind of things? Alot of pigeons are hard to tell from ferals but there are quite a few that aren't. If it were me I would throw together a suitable pen and catch it at night. YOU may want to be sure that it's tame before doing so and I don't know if you even want another bird to take care of. Another plus to keeping in a pen is that you wouldn't have to worry about it eatting and drinking after your other birds. If you decide you want to pen it up I can give you more details on what kind of pen it needs (not anything like a chicken coop).

I ran to Topeka this after noon and spent a ton of money. I bought two 50 pound bags of DE thanks to Sharol giving me the heads up. Thanks again.
Then I went to TSC and bought two 50 pound bags of dogfood, thanks to the info from Candace. (Sure hope they like it!) I bought another 50 lbs bag of chick starter. And I spent another $80 on two different kinds of Ivermectin. They showed on the website they had a small bottle of the pour on for $14.99 but they were out when I got there, so I had to buy the $40 bottle. I guess I can treat all the birds for a few years with that much! I got the injectable to give to my dogs for heartworm prevention. I bought some syringes as well to have on hand. So now all I have to do is figure out how to catch and treat all the birds and know which ones I've done. That will be a job. I got some more shavings so I can put the DE down and put in new shavings. Hopefully I can keep my animals bug free. I guess I'd better get my act together and do some major hatching to offset some of this expense.
I got the birds their evening treat and they are going to roost for the night. I think I'll do the same.

wow.. miss a couple days and the forum goes nuts! lol.

I need to rant for a minute, so if i can borrow your ear.. sigh.
My DH and I are "fighting" over chicken coops. The original plan was to convert our greenhouse into a coop. He now believes that we will not be able to get it insulated enough, be able to vent it enough, and that it's going to be a lot of work (I agree, but....) Now he's been searching on amazon and has found this coop to buy: http://www.amazon.com/Chicken-Poult...JE/ref=sr_1_18?ie=UTF8&qid=1328058567&sr=8-18 Reading reviews of this company, some are saying that it's made of cedar which is bad. I feel that this is going to be way too small for even 4 chickens, let alone if I get into chicken math and want more! I've been searching for design sites to try to find an easy design to build a coop, but then again we are back to him not wanting to build - just buy. What's a girl to do? arggg.. anyways, thanks for listening.. LOL
