Consolidated Kansas

The kids and I fed the chicks from our hands this evening for the first time. It was a hoot! They came near at first but wouldn't take the treats. Finally, one chick got brave, snatched a treat and ran. The others dived in. It was a chick riot!
OMG! That is so cute! I can't get the ducks to come to my hand just yet, but I'll give them a couple days to get used to the surroundings.

I saw a couple chicks with really, really full crops and managed to touch them while feeding the treats and they seemed pretty hard. I'm going to check in the morning to be sure their crops have shrunk back to a more normal size. They really went crazy for the sand -- hope they haven't sandbagged themselves! Has anyone ever had a chick eat too much sand? They have feed 24/7 so I can't imagine why they would prefer sand and maybe I'm worrying for nothing. Oh well, wait and see.

That is normal. By the end of the day all of my chicks have always looked like they swallowed a golf ball on one side of their chest. By morning they would all look normal again. They may eat some of the sand but as long as they have food and other things to keep them busy, I wouldn't think they would eat enough to hurt them.

I'm not sure when we left exactly. Maybe 130-2pm maybe. Checoukan's birds had been judged, but the judge was still working the area and we couldn't go look. He still had more to go even after that so...... Long day! She may fall down once she gets home, gets everyone put up and the adrenalin tanks.

Just been busy chasing one of those darn Sumatra hens all over town. I've already got POOPs on the calendar. Hoping to carpool and split the fuel costs. (Checoukan??? Hint, hint! maybe?) I have some birds I'd love more of if you can find any for me. I'll get you pics when I get a chance.

When is the swap in Muskogee?

In other news took the 7 year old DD to the Dr today only to find out she has an ear infection and pneumonia! Sigh! Her 4 year old brother goes in tomorrow and may be diagnosed with the same thing. This is why I will have a full head of gray hair by 40!

Hope the kids get better quickly. Nothing more "fun" than having sick kids at home. :(

My little hen seems to be getting better each day, so hopefully in a couple days I can put her in another cage & start introducing her to the other chickens. I will still keep her out in the run, but they will be able to see her at least & get used to her & she to them. She makes this strange noise when she hears the rooster crow outside. It's almost like a wild sort of sound rather than a chicken sound.

DH took off work today & spent the day putting up the garage door opener, he just now finished up. I'm proud of him, he did a really good job getting it put up. It's a different type than the one we had, so he had to take down the old one completely & start fresh. This new one sure is quiet compared to the old one & so smooth. Technology sure changes in a short time, new things all the time.
Glad to hear your hen is feeling better! YAY for a new opener! Don't you love how quiet they are now? Yeah, when we got our new one last year, we were so amazed! Congrats on your egg!! Sorry it was broke... but hopefully you get another one today!! :)

I just came in from the barn. I made some modifications on the upper deck of my bantam pens. They kept kicking all the shavings out so I put linoleum in there that folds up the front. When I clean it out all I have to do is bend the linoleum down and sweep it out. It worked great on the lower deck, so I put some up top, too. I think it will be a lot nicer for the birds to be able to have deeper clippings in there. I had to move the birds around while I was doing all this. I tell ya, I just love my old english and my rosecombs. They are so sweet, calm and gentle. I would HIGHLY recommend them for anyone who has kids that are going to be starting with chickens in 4-H or FFA.

Mike and I moved the new incubator into the basement today but I still have to clean the whole thing out before I fire it up. It was running well when we picked it up so I'm not worried about it not working correctly.

I love your incubator! Let us know how it works out for you! :) Sounds like you have your pens all set up to be less work on you. I need to do something like that in Seymore's pen. That girl can POOP. Wow.

Good morning all. I had another full day yesterday then DH decided we had to go to Emporia last night so he could do some shopping. So it was another late night. I needed dog food and a coupel other things so it wasn't a wasted trip.
Chopper now has a dog kennel to sleep in. It was much nicer this morning and last night. Tweety, ducks get very very active eating and playing then they sit down and sleep. Then back up eating and drinking then sleeping again. You need to have a waterer that they can get their entire beak into. Otherwise their nostrils will get plugged and they can't breath. Maybe your waterer is low so that is the only way they can get their beaks wet. I have learned with Chopper to do something to wear him out if I want peace and quiet. Yesterday I took him outside with me and he followed me while I did chores. He was ready for a nap. Earlier I let him take a bath in the tub and he played until he got tired and then took a nap.
You will need to get the ducks to imprint on you. They won't come to your hand but once they imprint they will follow you around. That means you and hubby are going to have to pick them up and hold them and talk to them. They will respond to your voice because ducks talk to each other and have different sounds to mean different things. You might as well get something to lay in your lap because they have no vent control and never will. It might take a few days since they normally inprint on the first thing they see, which was in your case a lot of other ducks. Just keep holding them. They will try to cuddle up in the fold of your arm to keep warm. Ducks don't need heat like chickens do. Three weeks is about all it takes. And I don't even put a heat lamp on them any more if they are in the house. They will collect heat off of each other.
I got confused on what day Bamaproud was coming. For some reason I was thinking today would be the 7th. So I have a no appointment day today I think. I might be able to get something done with luck.
Pikeman, Sorry about your sick kids. I am so glad I only have to worry about sick birds, dogs and cats, and parents now!
Speaking of which Mom is holding her own. She isn't doing great but doesn't seem to be getting worse. I've spent a lot of time talking to my Dad on the phone lately. She normally does the talking but he has to now. He is a lot like me normally and hates talking on the phone but he has been pretty talkative.
You guys and your garage doors. I would install a garage door opener myself, if I just had a darned garage to put one in! I've only lived in one house with an attached garage and it didn't have an automatic opener. I am hoping somehow to have enough money to get one built in the next few years, although I haven't figured out how to pay for it.
The wind is going to be insane today. But at least it is fairly warm out there already. I guess I should get busy cutting lumber later. DH just never took the hint and did it for me. He was too busy moving stuff out of his shed and back into it. He's a true hoarder. He just moves stuff around and leaves more of it sitting out and never gets it put back in.
