Sorry I haven't had a chance to reply to a lot of the posts on here... even though I'd like to.

Hawkeye- Bummer about the rosecomb eggs. I wonder what the problem is. I know Rosie has had good fertility with those and hatched quite a few before she filled her incubator with the U of A eggs. It sure makes me wonder. Have you been able to hatch any eggs yet? How about getting some fertile eggs from a neighbor to hatch, even if they are just mutts to at least test things out. You can always give the chicks away or something if they are not the kind you want to keep. Leave those eggs in there a while longer just in case.

Yeah, I know, I've been wondering too! I checked with the Brinsea thread to be sure my machine is running as it should. I'm at 40% humidity, and running at 99.5 (or a bit over when it's rocked) on temperature. They said it's normal for the temp to show a rise when it's rocked backwards as the heat rises to the top on that side, and my therm is over there. Everyone else has been hatching like crazy with the same exact settings and same machine already this year!!

I have two therms in there-- because I was getting paranoid. It can't be my machine. And I know my own eggs are infertile since I've been cracking them open and checking them. I'm wondering if the PO really scrambled these eggs up. I'm going to get a picture so you all can see what the eggs look like. On my infertiles-- I have a definite "round" yolk in there-- the rosecombs aren't round, they are sort of flat and a couple seemed to have settled to the bottom, which makes me think their yolk broke in transit. This isn't Rosie's fault, at all, I'm sure. Okay--- off to take some pics and see if anyone can clue me in!

These are Day 14.
Okay, here we go... for some reason, my camera would not work with all the lights off, so I did the best I could with some light in the room. I can try again if you all think there is anything there to see. If there is, I'll certainly try again! These are all diff eggs... Every one of them has a clear air sac at the top, as well. They must have all settled, because today I only noticed ONE egg that had a loose air cell.

This one is a bit more interesting since it does have a darker spot in it... but I still didn't see any veins or anything.

My personal opinion is....they are developing

At day 14, I would expect them to be a little darker and more filled but those really do look like mine did that first time I candled. I didn't see veins then either. This is the first time I've been sure I was seeing veins and I'm not sure what the difference is because now they jump out at me and I can trace every line. I'm wondering if veins are easier to see at days 3-5 than later on....

If you take one of those eggs and hold it still with the flashlight under it, can you see the fetus moving around a little?

Really!?!?! No, nothing in them moved at all. Huh. Well, I'll leave them alone and look at them again in a few more days and see what I think. I just figured with no veins.. there couldn't be anything in them. There are some that have a darker mass in the yolk... but there still aren't any veins...??? Can't wait to get more opinions on them. Thanks!

Day 14 on chicken eggs it should be half dark. Only 1 week left to hatch. I would say they are no good.

I must admit, I'm a little worried about that too - they don't seem nearly dark enough for 14 days

Compared to clear eggs, they definitely look like they started though, so were fertile. I know the Brinsea is usually fail-safe but I'm wondering if perhaps in this case either the gauges aren't reading accurately, or there was a temp spike that went unnoticed at some point. It seems unlikely that they would all develop the same amount before quitting, doesn't it?

I suppose that's possible my incubator had some kind of malfunction, but I'd say it's unlikely. (of course, I can't rule it out) But i have two therms in there and I check the temps constantly-- every time I walk by the incubator, I look at the therms. The only time they read high is when the machine is tilted to the back. But if you go to the Brinsea Octagon 20 Eco thread-- everyone says their machine does the same thing and it hasn't effected their hatches. I really don't even think any of these eggs ever started... Most of the yolks aren't round-- they are flat and some have settled to the bottom of the egg. Which makes me think the PO gave them a pretty good shake up. I've candled enough of my silkie eggs to know that those yolks stay round and they don't settle at the bottom. I would think that even if they started-- there would be some veins? Or is that wrong??

I was going to ask if they were shipped. One time I had shipped eggs and they started to make and quit. I broke them open and found the membrame on inside unhooked from shell in places. So post office shook them good. I have been selling turkey and goose eggs and packing them really good i wrap each egg in bubble wrap then line box with foam and foam between each egg then seal little box and put in bigger box with foam peanuts or air pillows around it hoping to stop that. But I bet that is what happened "egg shakin syndrome" is what I call it
