Consolidated Kansas

Hello All. Boring Sunday in El Dorado so i posted a few pics: my BF trying to train Nutmeg to speak (srsly), Cinammon watching my check my emails, and a weed identification of the day. This patch of weeds JUST sprouted today and they're already this size. Stalk feels eerily reminiscent of a dandelion. Purple flowers feel like the will open up shortly. Any botanists in the house ?? In other news I gave the kids all new shavings and put small blocks under the water and food to lessen the amount of litter I have to clean out of them four times a day. Sounds like everyone's so busy! I feel bad. Anyone need any help? Could anyone use a backyard farm intern? I can lift really heavy objects ! NO? Hawkeye ??

Nice pics!

Grape hyacinths. They are a perenial that comes up from bulbs like tulips. They multiply nicely and are easy to have around. Pretty!

The flowers are grape hyacinths, they're a bulb. It looks like your chicks are having fun..

Tweety-- THANK YOU for the chicken diaper links!! I never saw those!! I don't know how you found those-- but the blog one explains it better and I think I could make one from that description. :)

Ivy-- OH I know about the hinging at the bottom and the shavings getting caught. My nest boxes are like that. I'm going to scoop out all the shavings and put in the moss bedding from PetCo or where ever instead. As for this coop, I'm going to leave it, BUT I'm going to add another board so that it'll be higher and harder for shavings to get caught. But even at that, it's not to hard to brush them off to close. :) YAY on your Wyandottes! Too bad more didn't start, but hey, that's not too bad for being so early in the season-- that roo must have been doing his job!

Trish-- good day here too!! I just took a shower after cleaning out the pens in the garage and working outside and I'm happily worn out.

Ditto on the flowers. They are def. not a weed. One other thing I noticed in your pics. Is that cedar shavings you have them on? If so, you will want to switch them over to pine. The cedar is toxic.

Oooh, MarcAustin, I could have used you today!! Bwahahaha-- you'd have been holding ends up for me and lifting.. all kinds of things! LOL My clamps got a good work out. Your chicks are adorable! OH and I LOVE hyacinths!! I haven't gotten around to it-- but for two years straight I keep saying I'm going to plant those bulbs! If more pop up-- leave them alone, they get really gorgeous when they cluster together. Or hey, if you don't like them, I'll come dig them up for you.

Marc I could use you every day of every week. I'm always needing help! Grape Hyacinths will naturalize and you don't have to do anything special with them. Just enjoy them. If you have a flower bed you could dig them up when they are done blooming and plant them as a border plant. They will quickly fill in and make a really nice edging.
It was an awful day today. I had a good long cry because my Mom is so miserable and she isn't doing good at all. She wants to be with my Dad. She can't eat or function at all right now. I'm afraid she is going to die of a broken heart if we can't figure out what to do. Each day she pillars further down hill. I mentioned today that I could bring her and Daddy here and take care of them and my sister in law said she couldn't live with your cats. I said I could shut the door on her room. And then she said all that chicken dust would blow in from outside and make her sicker. It was like a slap in the face. So is this what the rest of my family feels? I sure hope not.

Danz-- BTW, I'm going to try to make the chicken diaper and fit it to my silkies just to see if I can get the idea down. IF I get it to where I understand what I'm doing, I'll make you one! If it fits, I'll make another when he gets bigger for you, too. You can have your house duckie. :) Anyway, I hope it rains tomorrow. If it does, I'm going to spend the day trying to make it and get the pattern worked out. It would be SO nice to have them just sit in the car on the ride up to our show this weekend. I was just putting a towel on my lap for Zorro since he likes to look out the window. I hope it doesn't mess up their bath, though.. so I'll see how it works and hope the poo really does drop down and away from them. So I'll test/experiment and then let you know how it went.

Good grief, Danz! That is horrible for her to say that. I'm not even sure that would really make her sick IF chicken dust were to blow in. At least the cats can be put in another room, so problem solved there. The chicken dust... heck, what about plain 'ole regular dust and pollen in the air. I'm not sure I'm buying that one. I'm really sorry about that. Is there any way someone can drive your dad over to the nursing home each morning and they can spend the day together? If all he does is just go home at night, then surely, that's better than nothing. I'm sure she misses talking and eating with your dad. He could pack a lunch each day before he comes so he could sit with her and eat with her.

Danz, so sorry about your mom, and about what your SIL said. I think there are a lot of misconceptions out there - best to not take it personally.

MarcAustin, if you're serious, I'll be building my new coop not far from where you are

Actually, DH just reminded me I need to get started sooner rather than later so perhaps as soon as next weekend. I sure could use someone to help with the lifting and whatever....
