Consolidated Kansas

I would never use a BB gun on my dogs either. That just doesn't sound safe. I have a cat that has a bb inbedded by her spine. She is very old and was shot when she was under a year by one of my neighbors obviously. But the vet said he couldn't operate or it would most likely paralyze her. The same could happen to your dog.
I would by all means shave the area around the neck where the shock collar sits and zap her every time she did something she wasn't supposed to. She is taking a little more time to grow up but my guess is that she will end up being the best LGD of the two. That high spirit means a lot of endurance when it comes to protection.
I kind of wanted to go to an auction today but I didn't have the time to stand around. It's a nice day so I imagine prices will go sky high.
Trish I don't know how you interact with the pups but maybe just give her a little more loving and affection. Maybe she is one of those kids that act out so they can get your attention!

Danz, I do give Lily attention whenever she's out there when I go out. I always give them attention at feeding time & honestly Lily is an attention hog & kind of demands it when you go out & she's out here & not out running around. I've had to deal with her jumping up on us & I'm still working on breaking that habit, they're just too big to be jumping on people. I sure don't want them jumping on my egg customers when they come here. I get conflicting advice from people on what to do with these pups. I sure don't want to hurt her at all, but there has to be a way to teach her she has to follow the rules here. She is getting too big to manhandle much any more, I barely could get her to the pen the other day when I got upset about the kitten she was playing with. Anyway, this one just is a problem child, if you could see the stupid grin she gives you when she knows darned well she did something wrong & you're mad, you would totally see what I'm talking about here. She has no regard for what I say or when I tell her NO, she just waits until I'm out of sight & does it anyway, I have hidden & watched her so I know. With Jasmine you can tell her sternly NO & she will look at you & you can see the OK I get it in her eyes & she will slink off, but not Lily. I did buy a shock collar thinking it would be the solution & when I got ready to put batteries in the collar part I found out there is a screw that was put in too tight at the factory & it got stripped trying to get it out. I contacted the company & since I didn't buy it from an "approved" retailer they won't cover it. I just haven't had the time to try to work on getting the screw out. So that's how that went, just my luck too. After I had bought the collar thing I found out there was this rock electric thing that probably would have worked better for my situation, but now I don't have the money for it. I'm going today to buy another dog run to use for my chickens when I get my other coop done. When you find these things for good prices like I told my DH you have to grab them. This one is less than a year old & it's $90 for a 6x10 ft run. That's about the size of the one I have the Ameraucanas in right now, so I can probably use them right next to each other along with the one the dogs are using right now & have enough room for all of my separate pens for the different breeds. Anyway, I just have a dilemma with this pup. I told my DH I don't know why we couldn't have gotten two pups like Jasmine, that would have been great, she just isn't much trouble at all if any. Her sister however is a totally different story, sigh.

Thanks all for the advice. Danz- I am being bad and not following the suggestion to keep her penned

I put her water and food buckets and giant beloved bone and dogloo all under the giant pine tree next to the goat pen and she LOVES it back there. I think she sees the pen as a punishment almost, like we are trying to control her or don't trust her. It is cool, right next to the creek and she can see everything. We go out to do stuff and if she sees us she does a couple warning woofs and I say hi Molly and she wags her tail when she hears my voice and comes over to say hi. Then she makes her rounds to check on the pens and goes back to her spot. I am quite amazed with her. When we head back to the house I sneak a glance over my shoulder and keep expecting her to follow because that is what a pet dog would do but she just turns and trots back to her spot under the tree and lays back down. She is just home already, it is incredible. Every now and then she gets up (I am spying out the window) and goes around the backyard sniffing and up into the pasture. Then she goes and she "checks" the chicken pen, the geese pen, and the goat pen and then goes and lays back down. If she had a clipboard in her paw it wouldn't surprise me. I told my DH she looks like a prison guard checking on her charges.

She stands up and does a big bark when cars drive down the road up the hill and when we pulled into the backyard to hook up the trailer she came charging out barking until she realized it was just us. I am enamored with her and her "presence" back there. She looks like a force to be reckoned with. I don't know why I waited this long to get a dog like this!!!! I am in love!

Josie-I am SOOOOO happy to hear this. I do believe you got a one in a million. She is an older, established female and she knows her job. I don't think you could have had any better luck than this. In this case, I would be worried about letting her out all the time this soon, but from what you say it sounds like she knows her place already! How wonderful!

Now, be patient. I wouldn't add that new pup QUITE yet!

Are you sleeping better? Now maybe you understand why we love these dogs SO much!

Trish- I am sorry about your kitten. I have to add my 2 cents about BB guns though. I worked as vet tech for years and have seen several pretty serious injuries with bb guns to dogs that were shot running lose by neighbors in rural Maine. A lot of people up there use bb guns to teach loose dogs to stay off their property and it can be pretty serious. We had one spaniel mix that came in with one near its spine that was affecting its ability to control its bladder. Eventually with a lot of meds it was under control but it was sad and I would hate for your pup to get hurt and have a serious problem from a bb. We have 3 sportsman collars that have a 1 1/2 mile range on them and they are awesome collars. Very adjustable stim from a very low vibration to an big OWE bite. They are super durable too and we bought ours through sit means sit dog training and they are covered for life. I had two batteries die last fall and they mailed me new ones no questions asked.

I do understand now!!

She is fantastic. I am going to get in touch with Candace and she said she would have a litter mid summer. That should give Molly plenty of time to settle in and establish a routine and then I will have time to work with a pup too because I won't have as many classes.

cherwill, The Golden Girls cast is adorable, thanks for the pic! How 'bout a pic of Sophia one of these days? They really are very pretty birdies.

tweety, the pic of Onyx is hilarious! Your babies have grown way up!

danz, I'm so sorry you haven't seen those birds today. That just sickens me for you. I, too, think you should consider using the building that's already on-site even though it's not as convenient to the house. It might just work. Do you have a 4 wheeler type thing? My mom used to use an old golf cart to make her rounds in.

The following is a condensed version of a cross-post. This morning we had a total of 38 hatched % Aloha chicks and more were pipping and zipping! I've named the very first chick to hatch Faster, because he is, of course. Faster was all alone for 24 hours while he miserably waited for his buddies to hatch. He's much happier now. He's also a bit of a character. He watches till a nice sized group of newbies settle down to sleep and then he dashes right across the tops of them, waking everyone with a start! He turns and watches the ensuing chaos. I've seen him do it twice! What a mess! Although, he has also been very helpful in showing the new ones how to eat and drink, so he's a very good birdie, just a little mischievous.

That's Faster down front and center, waiting for enough of them to settle down to sleep before rudely awakening them.

You can tell some of them were crossed with Speckled Sussex by the little chipmunky stripes. It's kind of hard to tell from the pic but some of them have a really lemon/mustard yellow cast to them. It's going to be so interesting to see how they color up. Can't wait!

The GOOD news.... we went out to the barn tonight and the doe we have been waiting on 4-EV-ER to have her babies had twins. They were up and doing well and already knew their business about eating.

The brown and black one is a doeling and the solid black one is a buckling.
I WANT THAT GOAT !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! BRING IT TO ME !!

Sorry, Marc. She gets to stay here. She is out of a belted red boer doe and a spanish/savannah cross buck. He's given us a great crop this year.....80% doelings!

Danz, I sure hope your peafowl will meander on back when they hear the male calling. I'd certainly get that trailer moved out away from the other birds so they can hear him. So sorry that they seem to have disappeared. :( Hopefully they will come back!

Took a picture of my garden this morning. Rosemary is growing on the left and Lavender is at the bottom of the pic. The center row of huge leaves--- I have no idea what that is! LOL I totally forgot what I planted last year. But i know it's a perennial of some kind-- something that flowers. I remember big red flowers last year. Thinking about ripping them out to make room for raddishes. :)

Then I worked on my brothers coop a bit today. I sat there and looked at it and tried to remember how I made the nest boxes on my other two coops!! LOL You'd think I'd remember something like that. Sigh. I had to go and open the doors on the others and figure out how I did it and then copied it. I think the box turned out quite well. It should be big enough for two boxes. Thinking I may not put a partition in it though... not sure what the internal space will be like, so we'll see. My brother is only getting 3 pullets. He says he has zero interest in getting more because they don't want that many eggs and they intend on fencing in their garden and they want the birds to eat the bugs without decimating the crop. The coop I'm making is big enough for 5 pullets in case he changes his mind. ;)
