Consolidated Kansas

Sorry, medawinks, but hens can be just as loud if not louder sometimes than roosters. Your neighbor is likely going to complain, but I imagine he'd complain about something anyways. So long as you are allowed to have them, don't worry about it. They'll eventually tell him the same thing they told him about the dogs.

I usually shred the silky meat into casseroles and such. Nobody really notices without the dark skin and bones. I skin them, then clean and dry the skins w/the feathers intact for someone that uses them for art/jewelry and stuff. Have 3-4 to do now.

We actually have 2 apple trees next to each other here and 2 at our other place. At the other place we started w/4 originally and I think what happened was instead of one of each making it, both of the same kind made it. No idea what he put in here, but they both look identical to me and well, never put on apples. Even if it's just a bunch or two, I usually have something by the 2nd year, this is year 5 for them I think here and year 12 at the other place. My DH also has wonderful nuggets like "It'll be x amount of years before you get fruit from it." and suggests waiting another year. Apparently in his universe, the longer you wait to plant it, the shorter the growth rate????

My DH is fun to mess with. For years I randomly changed all his programmed radio stations in his truck. He thought he had some electrical issue until one of the kids finally ratted me out.

Daren, I so wish I could have those Mandarin Ducks, but I have no place to keep them right now, they're so pretty. I would love to have a place like Danz has for hers, but I have way too many other projects in line right now to even think of taking on another one. Daren are you on the KS Poultry Swap? Post them on there & I'll bet you sell them pretty fast.

I got my DH to help me move the rabbit hutch out that I need to take apart & after he left I started on disassembling it. Wow, I didn't quite know what I was getting into. I'm planning on taking off the outdoor cage they put on the front of it & I'm going to take the wire off the top & put a hinged top all the way down so I can get to them to feed them. I started to try to get this part loose from the other hutch, but they put these 4 metal plates on the legs holding them together & the screws are stripped out already. I tried to start taking them out, but there are so darned many & with them being stripped it's going to just be too much to deal with, so I decided to just wait & get the reciprocating saw with the metal blade & just cut the plates off between the two legs & leave them. It's a shame they had to strip out all of those screws putting them in. I took off the wood pieces they had covered the wire sides with so they can have more air & took the hinged top off so I can work on taking out the darned square screws they put in it. I'm going to have to replace the plywood for the roof, it's rotted out. Then I'm going to give it a little more pitch & cover it with some shingles we had left from the roof when it was done last summer. I'm going to have to redo the bottom wire I noticed it's coming off, pretty much I have to redo this hutch about totally. It's one of those things people buy at the pet stores & they're expensive & then they don't last that long because the wood isn't that good. At least part of it is still good so I have something to work with. Thank goodness I have extra wood now to use to fix it up with. I'm trying to get places to put all of the rabbits outside under the trees for the summer before it gets too hot in the garage. There already have been days I have had to run the fan for them.

I've still got chicks hatching & there are still quite a few eggs that haven't hatched yet. It looks like some may be late hatchers & maybe some non-hatchers. These are some of the eggs that were in the hovabator when I had the Brinsea full & the GQF hadn't gotten here yet & I was having quite a time with regulating humidity in the thing. I just don't like it at all for incubating, but now that I have the new one I don't need to use it for anything but a hatcher & it works great for that. The humidity runs just about right for hatching, so I don't have to work too hard to get it where I want it for that.

Avery, sounds like you could have all kinds of fun with your DH! Mine you can converse with while he's sleeping. You won't know he's sleeping right away because he sounds quite sensible and reasonable until you realize he's having an entirely different conversation than you are. When we were sick, we picked up a two-pack of generic Nyquil because we couldn't get any sleep. We were lazing around the living room watching TV when I said I was going up to bed. He asked where the Nyquil was and I told him it was on the stair post, where we put small things that need to go upstairs. He said it was half empty and I said no, we just bought these. He replied that it wasn't enough to paint the porch columns with. Ohhhhhhh .... I get it now; he's asleep.

Medawinks, hens can be noisy but they don't tend to be noisy as early in the morning as roos. Mine aren't really that noisy (but I only have 6 layers) except when they're sounding a warning about something. They don't always do the egg song or else it isn't loud enough for me to hear it in the house. If your birds are in a coop when they lay, that might not be too much of a problem. Except I think Avery's right and this guy will complain anyway. I know it's tough when people have to sleep during the day, but the police will just tell him that he's going to have to suck it up and deal with it. It's noisy during the day. I'm sorry for you because that kind of neighbor is a real pain.

Totally off the subject of chickens, but does anyone have an idea on what I can do with some very old-fashioned cookie cutters? They're not made in a way that I could hang them decoratively on the wall. I never use them to cut out cookies, but I hate to just have them stuffed away in a box.

I know you said that you can't hang them on the wall, but can you attach them to a back board with superglue and make a shadow box with them in it?

tweety, that's a cute idea about the shadow box. How about making different squares of different old fashioned fabrics for a background with each cookie cutter having a different one? It's just an idea of how to use them, I'm sure there are probably a lot of different ways you could do that.

Boy I don't know what is wrong with me, I just can't get motivated to do much of anything, I feel draggy & just blah. I get the things done that I absolutely have to, but anything beyond that is just not going to get done, today anyway. I just feel like I want to crawl into the bed & curl up with a good read & stay there the rest of the night. Blah!

I got the feed, got all 1200 pounds shoveled into barrels. Went back around and fed some birds for the second time and now I'm ready to crash. I drove back into Burlington from Leroy where I get my feed to deliver some eggs to my sister. I was in a hurry like I always am. And I intended to run by to see my Dad. My sis and I sat on her front porch and talked for a couple hours. It was great. I actually relaxed for a while and just enjoyed myself. I just don't take much time to do that any more. I never made it to my Dad's but she had been over there and so had my other sister so he wasn't alone today.
I think I needed that more than I realized. I got an apron that my Mom used to wear. I have one that was my grandmother's as well. I don't know if I'll use it or store it. Probably store it, cause I don't wear the aprons I have often. I forget until I have already messed up my clothes. I got some chocolate mint dug up from my sister's place. I normally hate mint because it becomes so invasive but this stuff smells heavenly. I think I'll wait until it is established and then try brewing some in my coffee.

Oh Josie. I am pretty sure Marshmallow has grass allergies. She does great and grows a whole coat in the winter but as soon as the grass greens up she digs most of he hair out and stops eating as well. I might try giving her some Omega 2-6-9 after reading those articles. Maybe it will help her some. One of my cats is just like her. As long as I keep her inside she is good, and she is fine in the winter. But if anyone lets her out in the warm weather she chews her fur out. It's easier to just try to keep her in most of the time than take her for shots.

My American Bulldog, Darwin, has grass allergies. I found it very ironic as he's the one that loves to roll in the grass all day long. Our vet has us just giving him 2 benedryl twice a day. It's a lot cheaper than Rx meds. (generic walmart brand is 4 bucks) He weighs about 140lbs, if you consider trying that. We just give him his peanutbutter twice a day and stick the pills right in it.
