Consolidated Kansas

So, funny story for anyone interested. We butchered a bunch of roos this weekend and I was bringing them up in a carrier and setting them in the shade and we would go and get each bird as we were ready to process it. I was on a roll plucking a bird and DH says I can get the last one out of the carrier. I said ok, just be careful because he is quick. He walks around the corner and I hear the carrier door open and a scream and flapping and then DH says a bad word. He comes around the corner with a sheepish look on his face and I can hear the roo running and screaming back to the backyard. He says "I'm really sorry, it got away from me." I laughed so hard and told him I guess that one was pardoned from being butchered today. It is a little tiny serama cochin cross (product of stealthy broody serama hens) and it had moved in with the big girls several days ago. When we went back he had run all the way back to the pens and jumped back in with the girls! I figured I don't have a roo in there with them right now so they can probably handle him!

Here he is:

Silkie/cochin pullets

What naughty LGD puppies do on their time off...

What? This bag of trash was already over here, I'm not chewing on garbage. No, no you misunderstand. I am just inspecting it for safety purposes....
Great story :) I don't know much about conformation on banty or LF Cochins, But I LOVE the "bunny tails" Mine are all pretty round ended like that and they are all so sweet. I love the Silkie touch your mixes have, very pretty birds. That is a great pic of your GP, lol. They are naughty! Mine is such a thief, he steals anything he can reach that isn't nailed down or too heavy to carry.
SAPPHIREBLU - yes, her name is Linda from Hutch. I need to call her back today and tell her I'm not going to come out tomorrow to see her pups. I'm really not going to get a dog; I've made my mind based on information and research and it just isn't something for me. Maybe down the line, I'll change my mind, but not now :)
I was just curious. She is a very dear friend of mine, like a second mother :)
Anyone on the market for a slisking chicken?

checoukan, CONGRATS!

Hawkeye, oh I'm sorry, I thought they looked familiar, they can't even spell the breed of chicken right.

I just went out earlier to turn on the mister in the grow-out pen & found one of my little lavender Orp/porcelain Isabel chicks dead from the heat, awwhhh I just got those. I guess I'll have to get out there earlier tomorrow to turn the mister on. I've been working my tail off trying to get that other pen done so I can move the bigger chicks out of there & into that one. I'm hoping I can get the dirt moved into the holes & try to get them moved this evening. Even if they don't have a house in there right now I think they would be better off where they have more room. I can at least make them a roost so they can roost off the ground, but they will have to learn to use it first, they haven't had one as of yet. I'm hoping to score a free small dog house to put in there. I have seen several lately, but wasn't able to go get them.

We got the floor painted for the new coop this morning & as soon as I left the area Jasmine went & walked in the wet paint. I told my DH that I knew that they would do that as soon as I left. The other day after we had painted the primer on they walked all over it with muddy feet, so when my granddaughter was here Sunday she went out with grandpa & helped wash it off. She went home & told her mom that she now has a job helping grandpa with the coop. That got a laugh!

I don't know if it makes you feel any better or not, but the ad does say that the $40 is for the roosters AND the wire cage...
Not really, but it's *almost* funny that they are selling the cage with them. Sigh.

ETA-- I didn't mean that in a mean way-- just that I'm still pretty annoyed. :p

Hawkeye, here are my lovelies :)
These birds are gorgeous!! I LOVE that rooster-- WOW!!! Your Splash is amazing, too!! I hope they throw beautiful babies for you. I don't see why they wouldn't. Thanks for posting them!!

Checoukan, obviously your win is a testament to your fantastic work with your birds! Congrats again! I hope they all stay cool this week. Unfortunately it looks like it's going to be hotter than last week, which is a real bummer. I hope you took a picture?!?! I really, really, really want to see your gorgeous bird!!

Congrats Checoukan! What a great win! Ivy don't you have some of her rose combs too?
Hawkeye I'm so sorry about your roos. Maybe they bought the roosters so they could sell their crappy cage. Poor chickens.
Well I am trying to decide if I had a good day or a bad one. I moved 31 chicks today and 6 ducks. I made $55 and a bag of feed. (thanks Josie! You have no idea how that feed helps!) Not bad for no advertising.
I got a ton of chicken poop hauled off.
But... I lost two hens today as well. Found one while Josie was here and the other one just while ago. This d*(&*(($%^* heat!
So Josie came to get some chicks. Then a guy came to get poo and bought a couple dozen eggs. He also bought a rooster to butcher. I had a very pretty roo that was still young but large. He wanted just one because he hadn't ever butchered one before. If it goes well he would like to buy more.
Then some people who had saved my number from an add on Craigslist last year called and wanted to buy chicks and ducks. She took 24 chicks and 6 ducks. I was selling cheap today because I really wanted to get some birds moved out of here but still made a little money and have fewer mouths to feed.
Of course both of the hens I lost were purebred hens and not the mutts. Those mixed breed hens just hang in there. I had frozen ice bottles out today and the girls appreciated it but they can still just take so much heat. If I could move about 200 more chicks, ducks and guineas I'd be sitting okay for a little while.
I still have tons of broody hatched chicks running around and I don't know if I'll ever catch those wild things. They do a pretty good job of fending for themselves though so they don't really bother me much.

Ouch - I'm sorry that you are loosing so many birds Danz! :(

I took out the camera tonight and got some pics to share:

My Big girls! :) The all crowd around me when I'm out .

T
his is Jade. The one that I'm wondering if he/she is a roo. Jade's the only one with the comb. These are the blues from Chooks, but Jade also has red/brown splotches.. you can see them in the second pic.

This is Amber, the previously splayed leg chick And this is Amethyst - she's a lot lighter in color than the other two.

Now... Here's the funny stuff. I refreshed the pool and the ducks always immediately get in.
I've seen the first part of this behavior before and was going to tape it to see if anyone knew what was going on..
but as you'll see at the end of the video, I think my question was answered.
