Consolidated Kansas

HEChicken, at least you got some rain, we got nothing, again. We see the clouds move in & then somebody else gets the rain.

Well my Big Red rooster left this evening with a couple from Wellington. I think he will have a very good home with some new girlfriends, so that made me happy. They offered to pay me for him, but I told them no that I just wanted him to have a good home. I had very mixed feelings about him leaving, he has been a very good boy to watch over my hens, a little ornery at times, but he did his job well. My two GP pups were right there when I carried old Red out of the coop & we put him in a box they brought to take him home. They were very curious about where the rooster was going. I'm sure they won't miss him though because he has spurred them numerous times since they were tiny pups. He is the one that taught them not to mess with the chickens, so he did that job well too. I still have my Speckled Sussex roo & my Black Copper Marans boy who is a gorgeous roo. I need to get some pics of him soon, he came from Eileen & he is just huge & very colorful. So now we will see who will take over as alpha roo here between the two of them. The Speckled Sussex will be going into the breeding pen when it's done, but until them there will be the two of them running around.

checoukan, tell IVY we're all thinking of her & that we hope things go well with the interview & selling the house. We hope to see her back here after the move & all.

My tarp had finally just shredded that I had over the run, it's been up there a little over a year, so it did pretty well. It was the silver heavy duty one that Wal Mart sells. I had hoped to be able this fall to put something better over the top, but with building the other coop it probably isn't going to happen, so I just went ahead & took the old tarp down this evening & put up a new one. It really does help with shade in there & keeping the coop a little cooler too. The old one had torn right in half the other day in the wind, so it was really sunny on the half that blew off. I'm sure the little guineas will appreciate the new tarp too since it helps shade their pen too. They're doing really well & growing fast. They fly up on top of the board that goes across on the gate of their pen, all 10 of them. The gate is made of a pallet with some of the boards taken off & covered on the outside with hardware cloth, it made a very good gate. I used one for the other end of that pen too. Those pallets really do come in handy for things, I need to get some more of them. I built two pens with those pallets I got before & some wood that was with them, so it has all come in very handy. Sunflowerparrot gave me a really small pallet like I have never seen before, about 18 inches in diameter, I think it will be really handy for putting water or food on in one of my pens. If you want to get rid of any more of those Sunflowerparrot, send them to my place, they look really handy to have. I'm always looking for something to sit water or feed on that is level & that has been a problem for me. I never have enough bricks or other things to use around here.

It's supposed to be cooler tomorrow & the next couple days after that, so I hope to get out & do some things I haven't been able to do in this heat. It will give the birds & animals a much needed break too, I'm all for that. My DH should be home in an hour or so from OKC, we'll see how that trip went with him & a 7 year old going down & back.

Well so much for all of the weeks I had that darned brown leghorn pullet in the cage trying to get her healed & all, it was for nothing. I couldn't find her last night to put her in the coop. I went out this morning to find her dead & half eaten, so something got her last night & the dogs evidently found her & brought her back up to the front yard. I don't think they were the ones who killed her, it looked like the work of a possum to me. We have those darned ugly creatures all over the place here. I'm kind of surprised the dogs haven't gotten one yet. Anyway, Lily was lying beside her body when I went out there like she was guarding her.
Yay! I just won a Heritage Poultry Conservancy Mug from the Chicken Chat group on Facebook! I am a wealth of useless information ;)

Congratulations! It's not useless at all -- it got you a mug.

We helped a niece move to Hutch this afternoon. It sure seemed hotter than the projected 101. Maybe I'm becoming a wimp since we've had a few cooler days. On the way home, my FIL suggested we stop at a roadside fruit stand because they had peaches. There were samples and they were so good we bought a big ol' box of them. Looks like I'll be freezing peaches tomorrow.

cherwill, Ooh I love fresh peaches, they're so good! You will have some nice fruit for winter. I wish I could find some nice ones locally to freeze, that would be great. Yeah it felt hotter here than what they said it was too today. I'm looking forward to a few days of at least a few degrees cooler.

I got some pics of the kids this evening before the hurricane busted loose here in Olathe. Here are the kids:

See the lone pullet. I guess she would have good protection amongst all of those boys!

Danz - see the black combed roo? I have never seen a black comb! I would totally keep him if I could keep roos.

I hope everyone enjoys the much cooler weather. It went from 100 to 70 in the span of 20 minutes here. I don't think I have see the big a temp drop in a while.

We got the floor of the coop done yesterday :) I put one coat of paint over the floor last night and will put a second coat later today. Next step is to get the 4 walls up and painted! I am painting the pieces as we're ready to put them up.. Am going to paint the outside either a pine green or a barn red - haven't decided yet.

I am so happy that I am going to have a nice little coop by the end of this month :) It is just an 8x12.. but that should be good enough for what I'm doing. I am going to put in a 12' roost across the entire coop (how high up should I put the roost??) and some nest boxes (how many nest boxes do I need for about 20 layers? and how high from the floor should I put the boxes?) The area under the nest boxes will be used as storage for food bins.

The temps are going to be so much cooler - Yay and yay and yay!

Check out my coop pics to see how I did my roost.

Nothing fancy, but the roost is big enough for probably 12-14 birds.

Loralee,
Duck an I here at Slippery Hill Farm haven't had but 1.25" of rain since MAY, ut yet Perry Lake cotinuez to let water out, that's wher our water comes from. We are about to be in a water usage ban which means we can't fill our duck ponds
Yeah, all the rain has gone all around us, too. Hardly anything worth mentioning happening here. OH-- a couple days ago, I did have a drop of rain land on me as the big rain clouds passed by. Sigh. I hope the water ban doesn't happen-- it would just be so much nicer if we just had RAIN. Hope your ducks hang in there okay.

Hi, Danz, Susie and Mike have sold the land. They have not put their house up yet she is waiting for an interview in Parsons.
I did not get the sebbies, was waiting for some reason, and just well did not buy them, I may get a hold of him and make an offer.

Hope the lavendars do ok, sounds like they have a good start, the late one probably will not straighten out, you hatch more than I do.
Heard some sneezing outside, better go sit an see who did it. This darn hot weather is hard on everything. Being so dusty, don't want any thing to come up respriatory wise, and it sure can happen now.
going to offer some of my yearling rosecombs up for sale so I have room for my babies to get ready for show. How I hate to sell just to make room. Hurry new barn can't wait for you to be done so I can move my into my new digs!!!
Hi Rosie!! Sounds like they will be close to Parson's then! My mom's side of the family lives in McCune-- not too far from there. I had some sneezing earlier - about 2 weeks ago. I just heard someone else sneeze this morning. Sigh. I think this summer is just brutal on everyone. I also noticed that suddenly everyone I know is popping up with colds and flu lately, too! I'm so surprised!! Wish I could take those rosecombs off your hands, but I don't have the room. I want to build some nice pens in my barn. My DH said he is going to clean out the front half for me and let me build whatever I want in there.

I'm going to build some breeder pens so I can separate and move birds around more easily and I want a bachelor pen. I hope your barn gets done quickly!! It will be so exciting to finally have exactly what you've been dreaming of! :)

YAY Rob!!!! I am always too late for those! I click over and see they posted a game and then look to see 3 answers already ahead of me. I guess you have to be quick or just have the right timing! I would love to have one of their t-shirts, those are so neat!

Just for fun. Loved the choreography for this song:
LOL! That was really cute! Thanks for sharing that!

With chickens it is actually the hen who determines gender, unlike with mammals where the male determines gender. So the 99% cockerels wouldn't be his fault, but how strange that so many have been. Didn't you say once that you hatch more cockerels if you try to incubate in the summer?

I was gone all day today. I took my parents to the Underground Salt Museum in Hutchinson and with the drive there and back and spending quite a few hours there it was an all day trip. At least it was cool down there. Too cool - we all ended up wanting to leave because we were nothing but goose bumps. Now that I'm home, I can tell you it got way over double digits here. Our thermostat is currently reading 111, but I don't trust it this time of day. I think it is in a position where the sun hits it in the very late afternoon because it always jumps up high then. Nevertheless, I only ever saw it that high on days when it was around 105 for real, so I think the forecast missed its mark by quite a bit today.
I had NO idea it was the hen!! I figured it would be just like us-- where the boys determine it. Interesting! I've not been to the Salt museum, but I want to! I guess I'll remember to wear jeans and bring a jacket! I bet it was really neat, though! We got to 105 here. I was wondering where our cooler weather was supposed to have gone?? It sure didn't happen!! It was HOT!!!

We had the most awesome evening because it rained but the sun was shining and I've never seen it go on for so long! Every time it started to ease up, it would renew even harder. There was a rainbow and the whole time the sun shone at the same time. I don't think I've ever had to worry about getting sunburned and wet at the same time. Unfortunately the amount of rain wasn't enough to even register on a rain gauge - just enough to wet the ground and raise the humidity. But it was fun to watch....
Rain!?!??!?! Where!?!?!?! Glad you got to enjoy that.

Lucky you, HEChicken. The rain went completely around us. We had T-Storm warning and all.. grrr.. I guess I didn't dance hard enough.

Danz - That's absolutely crazy about the duck! I'd have done the same thing though! How's she doing??

Not too much going on here - all's well in Larryville. Gotta stop my drake from chasing the chickens though. He's got his two girls, what in the world does he want with the chickens? LOL
Sounds like his little hormones are getting the best of him! Going after chickens, sheesh!

Well my Big Red rooster left this evening with a couple from Wellington.

Well, at least your granddaughter will be much happier not having to worry about him. I think you did the right thing. :) I'm hoping we get that cool down too. I'd sure like some rain, too. Sigh. What is the drive time down to OKC, I haven't driven it enough that I just don't know. We've been researching the area for homes with land and most of them are out east of Midwest City and down by Norman. Hoping that won't be too far from Wichita and my DH's family. None of my family live here-- so it doesn't matter to me where we live. When I mapquest it, I know it's not really all that accurate.

We got the floor of the coop done yesterday :) I put one coat of paint over the floor last night and will put a second coat later today. Next step is to get the 4 walls up and painted! Congrats on progress with your coop!! YAY!!

As for the roost, with all the bumblefoot issues, I would put it up NO higher than 3 feet. Mine is at 3 feet in my coop. I have a ladder style they can hop up to get up there and get down to make it easier on them, too. My nest boxes are 6 inches off the floor-- that way I can put in deep litter. Also, so they don't try to roost in the nest boxes. You want those boxes pretty low to the ground.
