Who was it that mentioned Soay sheep a while back saying it was a hair sheep. Here's some for sale. First I've ever seen.

Oh yes, it was Chickies_Duckies_etc and she had addressed it to me, and I subsequently researched them. It is just perfect to see some for sale but I'm not in a good position at the moment to get them. Our pasture has one fence that is 5-strand barbed wire and it is on the "long" side. It would keep in large livestock like cattle or horses just fine but in order to put in the smaller animals, we would need to do field fence on our side of it. Fortunately we could use the t-posts that the barbed wire attaches to, so it wouldn't be that hard to do but would be an expense and with everything else we've got going on right now, we just don't have the time to do it. Not to mention, I'd really rather not get animals now that I have to over-winter before I even get the benefit of them. What I'd like to do is do the fencing between now and spring and in the spring, when the new grass is starting to grow, THEN get the livestock that can benefit from it. So, unfortunately the timing doesn't feel right here, but hopefully a similar opportunity will come along next year and we'll be rarin' to go by then!

I've been out sweeping and hosing and vacuuming out the Serama house. I just came in and mixed up some oxine to disinfect it. I am so angry with myself or my chicks...not sure which. They apparently knocked their water fount over sometime last evening. As soon as I opened the door I detected that smell of mold. I am very sensitive to it and pick up on it very quickly.

Sure enough my oldest lemon cuckoo cockerel was not feeling good. I brought him and tried to get some probiotics, vitamins and electrolites down him but he just died. I know he has to have eaten some of the mold that started to form. I moved the other chicks that were with him to a different bin. I plan to move them all out to the Seramas house when it is clean and dry again. But it will probably be late tomorrow before it is completely ready. I need to put some tin along the edges to keep the mice out where they have dug holes too. Seems I'm always a little late getting my projects done. I've had the worst luck with these lemon cuckoos. I just bought some eggs from another seller in hopes I have better luck with those.
So sorry about the Lemon Cuckoo - you don't seem to be having good luck with them at all. Hopefully the new eggs will hatch well and fare better.

Well, I thought I would update on the real estate situation about which I posted a day or two ago. I wound up writing an email to the realtor explaining the concerns I had, and at the end requested that we void the contract and each go our separate ways. To her credit, she replied with an email apologizing profusely for her poor communication, and saying that she wouldn't want to hold me to a contract if it doesn't feel right to both of us, so consider us canceled. The relief I felt was instantaneous and last night I slept better than I have for days, since I didn't have to wake up in the middle of the night and toss and turn worrying about the situation. Around the time all this was going on, I had a sudden thought about a realtor whose signs I've seen in my neighborhood a lot, so I decided to call him. I figure he gets enough listings in that area that he probably knows the market there real well. He came out to look at it right away, and called me last night with a game plan. I feel 100% better about this than I ever did about the first realtor. I signed with her based on the strong recommendation of a good friend of mine, and against my "gut". What I have learned from the experience is that a) "one size does NOT fit all, and b) trust my gut.

I'd be sure you get a termination agreement signed with your first realtor or she could demand a commission if the other realtor sells it. Just a CYA thing. I am glad it is all working out for you. Great to sleep at night again, isn't it. I hope the new guy is super proactive and gets it sold fast!!!

Wow, that's wonderful. I agree about an official termination document, but it's great that she didn't make false promises to do better or try to make you stay your contract with her.

Another busy day ahead at the bird zoo. I've got to go take my dad to church and then feed him dinner. Then come back home and feed and water everyone. (They are out eating their morning bugs right now. Then put tin on the floor of the old Serama house. Then move some birds out there. Then move some more birds and clean out the brooder house and disinfect it. That alone is a full days work. I need to take a picture of a roo for sale. And some other people were supposed to come get some pheasants if they show. It will be evening before I have time to sit. It was pretty foggy earlier and the grass and my dogs are all wet. It is nice to walk outside and it be cool. The hurricane blessed us with a little rain and the ground is actually not totally dry. I had some flowers that went totally dormant and when I looked out this morning there were some leaves coming up. Nice change.
Cherwill, I don't think anyone has ever mentioned you first name.....or I forgot. Maybe you did when you first started posting. My best childhood friend lives in Mcpherson. I haven't seen her since the early 70's. Her name is Patricia Eccles. Do you happen to be acquainted with her? I was tall and skinny and she was short and a little heavier. Everyone used to call us Mutt and Jeff. Okay so you younger people probably have no idea who Mutt and Jeff are. Sorry!

My name is Cheryl. I may or may not have mentioned it way back when. I don't know a Patricia Eccles, but I'm not a very sociable person! I graduated from high school here in 1982; would she have been in school around that time? I did leave McPherson between '83 and '91.

There's not much to do outside any more. The garden is mainly just eggplant, peppers and tomatoes, and those have slowed way down. Today we're cleaning the basement. We try to do it once a year whether it needs it or not.

Our big old poodle should have been named Vaccuum instead of Varick.... He just sucked up the 4 little eggs my Sera had in her little pinch pot on the kitchen...... Good grief!!! No pretty little displays of eggs when he is inside!

Do new pullets lay a few eggs and then stop for a week or more? Our white rock never laid an egg in the nesting boxes, just anywhere in the coop. We found them by the gate, by the water and in the middle of the yard. Now we haven't seen one for over a week.

Our splash silkie started laying though!
She did not crow!! :) Sera is thrilled! Her eggs are pinkish brown, darker than Blooms very light pink/ white ones. She is also very quiet. No loud goofy egg song :-(. But she has laid one daily.

I am glad Fern is on the mend!! I wasn't able to read carefully. But had to search to see how she was!

Hawkeye, I love your mural!!!! You definitely have talent!! I am so envious! I want to see more! My Aubri loves to draw and she is planning something similar for her bedroom on Sera's wall with pandas and bamboo. I am attaching a sketch she drew for a friend while waiting for me at school. She would not be happy with me for sharing, but I think it is pretty good. It is something she enjoys. I showed her your mural and it definitely seemed to not only impress her, but also inspire her :)

Tweety. So glad you are feeling better and the egg drop soup worked!! That is one our family's favorite comfort foods! I must get my act together and copy and paste the smoothie recipes for you! Sera loves them now, in preparation of needing to eat them.

I saw chicks today at Orschelens! Shock for me.... I guess I better get Feather to you soon Danz, so maybe there will be little d'uccles soon!!! :) I can't wait to see the changes you have made to the bird zoo :)

I saw an add on Craigslist for Buckeyes. I think we will hope to raise a few of them to add to our crew. I know the buckeyes sound like they will fit in well. We love our Marans who are so quiet. I hope the buckeyes will be too. We couldn't find the blue splash Marans anywhere.
If anyone sees a pullet for sale, please let me know:)

No, she didn't move there until after her husband was out of the military. Not sure what year that was. She would be 60 years old and has her hair a dark reddish brown color. Kind of short and heavy person who works as a church secretary. Not even sure what church. We kind of parted ways when I got married and I think I've only seen her once or twice since then.
I haven't heard anything from the people that were supposed to show up. They were several hours late the last time they were supposed to come. I guess some people just don't realize some of us have a life!!
I haven't gotten a tenth done I intended to today. For some reason I am just dragging.

Aubri is very talented. I would love to see what she does in color.
Not that many changes around here but a lot less birds. I am getting some more hatching eggs to add a few more to the managerie in a month or so. This is downsizing believe it or not!!! It's all a process to try to add some good stock. There are a lot less birds but it's kind of hard to tell.

Medawinks, my first BO to start laying, lay 4 eggs in 5 days and then didn't lay another for 11 days. I was so sure she must be hiding them but I searched everywhere and didn't find any. Then she started back up and laid for more than 60 days without taking another day off!

This summer I've had several who have laid a few eggs and then didn't lay again for awhile. I put it down to the heat but perhaps it had more to do with them being new layers? I dunno.

I went to see the BirdMan today and now have a pair of Royal Palm Turkeys - I am so excited for them to get settled in here. So far, they seem to be doing fine and adapting to their new environs. I am enjoying the sounds they make! The jake is a little younger than the hen and sadly, had his beak trimmed. I'm sure he will catch up with her in size in no time.

My 2 1/2 week old chicks that I hatched will be spending their first night outside tonight. They are so strong and healthy and haven't had a heat lamp on in about a week, so I decided as warm as its going to be this week, its a good time to transition them to living outside full time.

Danz, maybe if they show up late you should pretend not to be home? Sometimes when people are coming I will tell them I need to leave at a certain time so they know they have to be here by then or they'll have wasted a trip.

Haven't heard a word. I was wanting to clean my brooder but didn't want to move their birds. Well that is my excuse right now. I'm not sitting at home another day waiting for them. These people need to get a clue. I made some money from them but I cut them some good deals to do so. I won't continue feeding the two birds they paid for in advance for nothing.
I have another buyer who is paying more for the others.
I moved several young birds out to the Serama house today now that it is empty. I hope they have the sense to go inside for the night. I also moved some young cockerels out with the older ones. I hope they don't get picked on. None of them are very old so being outside is going to be different for them. I hope they are old enough to stay warm. I could have put them in the old garage but I would have had to catch them all over again in a few weeks. So if they survive the night all is good.
