Consolidated Kansas

Just a quick check-in. I read a lot and don't remember half of it now. I'm sorry if I don't comment on something important or leave someone out; it's not intentional. Add me to the list of people having a freakish week or so. I think we all understand how that works, Danz, and I didn't see anything from you that was out of line.

One of the people we mow for died and it's not even the guy with the terminal illness. He was about my age, which I know I called old a few days ago, but it's not THAT old, not so old I would expect people to be dying from it. He went into the hospital a week and a half ago with difficulty breathing and I guess they were checking out his heart and somehow found that he had colon cancer.

I saw some of you talking about wills and stuff. I forget who mentioned a living will and health care power of attorney, but that is excellent advice. Back when I was a legal secretary, we did a lot of those documents and, after my grandpa died and there was some confusion over the doctor's too-subtle way of trying to tell my dad it was time to pull the plug on the respirator, I made both documents for myself. Another thing DH has brought to my attention is the DNR (Do Not Resuscitate) document many elderly people have. If you have someone in your life with a DNR, make sure it is someplace obvious in case no one else is home and the emergency services end up there. A common place is to put it on the fridge. DH has been in some sad situations where the family was very distressed by the EMTs not following the order because no one knew where it was. If they don't see the document, they're required by law to attempt all life-saving procedures. 'Nuff sad stuff.

I have a vague memory of someone talking about their EEs flying over the fence to see them. Mine have done that several times, too. It's earned them a wing-clipping because my dogs are hunting breeds who would LOVE a chicken dinner! My EEs are the most talkative breed in the yard, and the two youngest follow me everywhere when I'm in their yard. If I open the coop door to check something, they come running in to see what I'm doing. DH really wants some Gold Stars next time we add chickens, but I think I'm going to insist on another EE or two as well.

Well, I've moved on to actual painting and DH finished priming his sections of trim today. It's always more fun when you get to the actual color, even if that color is off-white. I'm having some odd physical reactions to all this. Some of the back problems remaining after all the pelvic strain/sciatica have gotten much better, although it still flares up if I sleep on my back for too long. My foot, despite not being able to really rest it like the doc said, is improving but now the ankle is feeling weaker. Overall, I think the gains have been greater than the losses, so that's something.

I don't like spiders, but I don't freak out like I used to. Instead, I bargain with them. I tell them I'll leave them alone if they'll leave me alone. Mostly it works. If not, I yell for DH ....

Chickies, Duckies, etc can't post for some reason and she asked me to include this link to an ebay auction.
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=130771548717
I have seen these and would love to have some. But then what bird would I not want to own?
I just love those Venturines, but I'm not going to pay that kind of price for them & then take the chance on something eating them, they are beautiful though.
Danz, I haven't noticed anything either! I think we all benefit from and value your wealth of knowledge.

49 mice....[shakes head]. My stupid mousetrap arrived on Tuesday and as of yet has not killed a single mouse. I'm going to be ordering a couple of those Victor traps like you have. If you have a couple spare, I would buy them from you but if not, let me know and I'll just go ahead and order them.

Speaking of electrical hazards....on Tuesday I went out my backdoor and was walking to the coop when I saw a plume of thick black smoke. I would have figured it was someone burning off except right then I heard sirens. It looked REALLY close, so I got in my car and drove toward it and one of my neighbor's houses was completely engulfed in flames. I don't know what started the fire but it certainly is my worst nightmare.
That's terrible about your neighbor's house, you always do think about what you would do if that happened to you. You can replace most things, except for your treasured photos, there are just some of those you can't ever replace. We have most of ours on our computers & we have talked about backing them all up & taking the backup somewhere else, but haven't gotten it done. We have thousands of photos.
Ha! Ha! DH was doing that in his shop just the other night. He got bored I guess and was popping them with a pellet gun. He was so proud of his kills he left them there till the next morning so I could see them! My luck if I shot at anything it would ricochet and come back to hit me!!!
Electricity is dangerous if you get careless, and many things hold a charge that people don't even realize. You can totally shut off all power and if there is a capacitor in what you are working on, it can still give you a deadly shock. We used a live dead live test before we touched anything electrical at work. Of course some of the equipment had as high as 1380kv. Needless to say if you made an error it would be your last. I always test at least twice before I work on something and I normally tape the breaker switch if anyone is in the house besides me. No reason to take chances. I am a big chicken when it comes to electricity. I would much rather give advice than work with live wires!!! I really enjoying wiring up things though before it is hooked to the power source. It's kind of like hatching chicks when you flip the switch or plug something in and it works. Makes you feel successful.
I have made some mistakes though. I was repairing a coffee pot once and got distracted in the middle of rewiring it. I hadn't tagged it or written down what went to what. When I plugged it in, it not only shot out fire, but it melted the wall switch!!!!

Electricity scares me, that's why I haven't gotten my cookie can heaters done yet, I'm kind of afraid to wire anything, but I do need to get some of those done before winter. I have the stuff, just haven't gotten to it.

Sapphire, it was so nice to meet you today & we had fun seeing all the goats too. R is now asking Michelle to get goats she loved them so much & I told her that she needs to get some. I said that our next trip up there we need to bring back baby goats. I would like to have a couple just for brush control at our place. The babies are so darned cute! Those little chicks are just so pretty, almost made me want some. We left there & went & got my rabbit I went up to get & I'm really happy with him, so I'm glad we got to come. We had a really nice trip today, it was fun to get away for a few hours. We stopped at Atwoods on the way back & of course they had chicks, ducks, & guineas & we looked but we were good & didn't bring any home. Those little ducks they had were so cute though! We got back to Sunflowerparrot's house & I was going to take the car & back it up to where she has the pallets at so I could take a couple more home & wouldn't you know it I found the only big mud puddle up there by the barn & didn't see it in time & drove right in there. It was like a bog there & my car just sunk. We tried & tried to push the car out, put boards under the tires, rock it back & forth, but I couldn't get out. I could just see me explaining to my DH that I had gotten the car stuck at her house & we had to go get it out, he was going to kill me. So she called her neighbor down the road & the guys came with a big diesel truck & a chain & pulled my car out. Then I had to go to the car wash on the way home & try to get the mud off my car. I went through this stupid car wash in town & it didn't get all the mud off, so I ended up taking a bucket of water out & trying to wash the rest of the mud off, but there is still mud on the tires & in the wheel wells, so I know my DH is going to ask me where I got in mud. I'm not telling him I got stuck though, no way. All in all though it was a good day.

My grandfather was an electrician and my brother is an electrician - but I have always been afraid of electricity too. When I was very young - maybe 3 or 4 - I remember plugging in my mom's iron (not that I had any business doing that! lol) and I shocked myself! That scared me so badly and something I never forgot or completely got over when it comes to electricity. I am going to do one of those tin can heaters too.. maybe we can work on that together.

I had so much fun yesterday! I talked to my BF on phone last night before bed and I could almost see him rolling his eyes that I bought MORE chicks! :)

I am loving my new lifestyle so much and feel blessed that I have this opportunity to experience so many simple joys in life :)

Someone had asked how I made the fly trap -

1) Gallon jug with a lid
2) poke some holes (big enough for a fly to get into) about 2 inches from the bottom of the jug (I poked 6 holes around mine)
3) fill wish some water below holes
4) fill with some chicken poop (or other poop) and a piece of raw meat
5) tie a string around the grooves in the lid and then screw the cap on tightly over the string (I used yarn)
6) hang out of the way
7) add more bait as needed

From what I read, the flies will try to escape by flying upward - therefore, will be trapped in the jug after crawling in due to being attracted by the smell in the jug. I'm anxious to see how this works. I wasn't home most of yesterday so not sure how well it worked - will keep you updated if it is a complete success :)

Silly Tilly
"Tilly is not an ordinary goose. She takes her baths in apple juice. She wears a pancake as a hat. She tries to ride the farmer’s cat."
But the barnyard animals complain that she’s too silly. When she stops entertaining her friends with her antics, the farm becomes a quiet and unhappy place. David Slonim’s acrylic, pencil, and ballpoint pen illustrations add to the hilarity in this story about a one-of-a-kind silly goose.

Sound like a cute farm story :)

On a similar vein, cinnamon works great to eliminate ants. Find their trail and figure out where their entry point to the house is, sprinkle a little cinnamon there, and by next day they will be gone, never to return. I wouldn't have believed it if I didn't try it and it worked!

I would think they would work great.

That is a great story about the cats! I was a foster at KHS during the same time frame. I think I signed up about 4 years ago and fostered both dogs and kittens up through last year. You know what they call it when you adopt a pet you fostered, right? A Foster Failure!!!
gig.gif
Good tip about the cinnamon, I might try that! Hilarious about the Foster Failure!

For some reason everytime I get on BYC and come to our kansas thread, my computor freezes up!!
barnie.gif
It is not doing ANYWHERE ELSE!!!! It makes me wonder what in the world is going on. Everything locks up, if I wait, up in the tool bar, I can refresh, but maybe it will go, or just turns around and works. Cotton Picker anyway!!
oh no!! Well, that's not good, because I'd love to see you around here more! :(

And... there is went again... my disappearing posts. Does anyone know if spamming is allowed on here? I'm not planning on spamming anyone, don't worry. I was just curious if it's allowed.
Oh wow, BYC is acting crazy lately! :( Spamming isn't allowed here, they had some trouble with that last year and they can ban people from getting back on. Assuming they are using the same IP address.

I've also read that planting peppermint along the foundation will do the same thing. The problem with peppermint is that the bees love it too. I finally had to get rid of what I had because you couldn't get near it after it bloomed. I have some areas where nothing grows along the foundation due to the heat. I might try that next year again.

I use vinegar for ants. Sometimes it takes a day or so to work but it works. I see them on the kitchen counter. Wipe it down with vinegar and it must mess up their trail or something.
I could never be a foster. I would fall in love with every animal and want to keep it.

Rosie that is crazy. That is 3 people today having trouble with BYC. I have lousy internet so I can't imagine any ones being worse.
Yep Hawkeye, they were drowned mice. I don't touch them until they are dead or very close. Then I wash my hands over and over and over!
I don't think peppermint gets rid of mice. Or at least, not in my experience. I have a raised flower bed, and one 8ft side is all planted in various peppermint plants. The reason I say it doesn't keep mice away is because I have had a problem with mice in my raised bed and they dig tunnels in my bed. I took care of it though. I put poison down their tunnels and haven't seen them since. So much for the peppermint theory.

Well we mentioned spiders, mice, but no-one has mention CRICKETTS!!!! I will tear my house apart looking for one of those dang things!! Makes my hair stand up on my back, and then light it on fire!!!! Those are definatly out of pandora's box!!
Spiders aw just smash them.
Mice nasty little buggers. My daughter Michelle, when we first moved here would go out in my barn that has the chckens in, and she would take a flash light. Could not figure out what she was doing. She took her BB Gun and flashlight, and would go out in the barn, hold the flash light in her left hand, bb gun in the right, and shoot mice! Now let me tell you, she is now a dead-eye shot!!
ANyway she sure did a number on the mice around here!
OH my gosh, we have TONS of crickets! The chickens are eating well!! We are all catching them and giving them to the birds. But we don't really even have to catch them, I just have to lift up a water font or feeder and BAM-- tons of crickets are under it! Then the chickens dive in for the kill! LOL Its great! That is amazing your daughter could hit mice with a BB gun! Wow, what an aim!!!

Whoa, your coffee pot and outlet-- good thing you didn't burn the house down! LOL Yikes!

Hawkeye, please share some pics of your doll:) it sounds like you have had fun with this, and knowing how creative you are, it has to be adorable!!!. My youngest got something similar on one of her surgery trips at Shriners.
Oh no.... This is the part about baby chicks that breaks my heart!
All of our chicks were fine this morning before school and just after school when Andy checked on them. Now, though a smaller chick is not standing up. There is no bloody poop, no overly ruffled feathers. It had not been quiet before.... We have gotten it to drink some electrolytes solution and eat some baby parrot food.

Any ideas????
I'm going to guess coccidosis.. but I really don't know. Corrid is a drug that is used to treat sick birds with it. It's at Atwoods (or any farm store) in a couple different sizes. Did your chick make it last night? I'm so sorry about her. :( I hope she will pull through.

checoukan, my kids would so enjoy that and it would give them great practice for the bigger shooting. That's a great idea, now I wish I had been seeing mice.

danz, that's kinda funny about the coffee pot, I'm just glad you didn't get hurt. One time I took apart a camera and the battery wasn't in it and it shocked me and it even hurt. I was so surprised though because I had taken the battery out so where did that come from?

medawinks, I'm so sorry about your chick. I hope it recovers but it seems like when they go down it just happens so fast. :(

hawkeye, we do extended nursing and attachment parenting too. To this day when they need me I stop for them but it seems to make them more independent because they just don't act like they need me. My youngest is 4. My older kids that are moved out will call and talk to me about things I would never have thought they would call me about and it makes me really happy that they will talk to me. I did cloth diapers but I cheated more than I should have, we rarely do fast food but I can't say we never do. We limit sugar to a point, we splurge for birthdays and if we go to town which isn't very often. We don't have pop or koolaid in the house. In general, I say if we want sweets bad enough to make it then it's okay. Do you ever whisper to your kids to get them to listen? It works great and teaches them to tune in to you. Also I'm a ridiculously early potty trainer. My mom always said they're not potty trained I am and our dr. gave me a hard time because I had a 9 mo old pee in a cup. There wasn't ever a battle with it, or even any stress. It's just what we did. We have a lot of fun and I'm so proud of all of my kids.
Oh yay! Another like minded parent! I really think people are trending towards what we are doing. No, I don't whisper, I run out of patience pretty fast. One of my faults for sure. I'll have to give it a whirl! I know what you're talking about with the PT'ing at 9 mo-- there is a term for that. OH!! Elimination Communication! EC. Okay, I never did that, I was overwhelmed as a new mama. Thinking back, I could have done anything, but honestly, I didn't get the hang of parenting until my oldest was about 8 months. The only child I had to use formula/bottles on was my middle child. When he was about 8 months old, I found out I was pregnant again. I was under weight and not feeling my best and my milk dried up. I took drugs and drank that mother's milk tea, but nothing worked. I had to go out and buy bottles for the first time! I had no idea what I was doing. I had never used bottles or anything up until that point. Fortunately, my 3rd baby never had to use formula/bottles. What a roller coaster-- having kids can really make you change your path even when you say you'd never do something.... like formula! LOL

So she called her neighbor down the road & the guys came with a big diesel truck & a chain & pulled my car out. Then I had to go to the car wash on the way home & try to get the mud off my car. Oh yikes about getting your car stuck in mud!! Oh boy, I would have been so upset. :( I'm glad you got it out and didn't damage the car other than it's just a bit dirty now!
wink.png
I bet you'll be hearing mud chunks flying off as you drive it down the highway for a while....

I want to hear about the chick too. Poor thing.

Hawkeye, my milk dries up when I'm pg too but not completely. I always quit nursing when I was pg with the next but it wasn't as early as it was with you. Your babies were pretty close. The whispering thing will take a while to work if you don't start when they're little. I agree, never say never because you just don't know what you could be presented with later. We went from having babies at home to dramatic c-sections, and that setting in itself brings changes in the things I always thought I would never do.

Hope everyone has a great day. We are going to lunch with my parents today.

We got back to Sunflowerparrot's house & I was going to take the car & back it up to where she has the pallets at so I could take a couple more home & wouldn't you know it I found the only big mud puddle up there by the barn & didn't see it in time & drove right in there. Oh my, what adventures you have had with that brand new car already!

I have found the same thing when I lift up anything that's been sitting a day or two. Not tons, but there are usually one or two under there - nice little protein snack for the birds.

My turkeys have transitioned to being out with the flock all day now. Since I am feeding them 28% gamebird feed (the male looked a little rough when I picked him up so I'm trying to feed him well to get him looking better), the feeder in their pen has that feed, while the chicken feed is regular layer feed. So halfway through the day I go out and they are hanging around their pen, waiting to be let in to get some more to eat. So funny. After they've eaten, I open the door again and let them back out for the rest of the day. Then at bedtime, they are there waiting to go back in again. Such good little turkeys. I can't just leave the door open all day or the chickens would go in and eat all the expensive gamebird feed but for now this system seems to be working.

Betty continues to settle in. Being a lone bird, she doesn't have a special friend from among my flock, so started hanging out with the chicks I hatched 6 weeks ago. As long as she's happy, I'm happy. They spend most of their day out of their chick pen, but just like the turkeys, they like to go in their pen to eat their special chick feed. In the morning they fly out of the coop and run down to be let into their pen. After they've eaten their fill, they are ready to get out and free-range. Throughout the day, every time I go down there I either let them in or out depending on where they are. Betty seems to prefer to just stay in the chick pen all day, so even when the 9 chicks leave to free-range, she stays in the pen and waits for them to come back. In the evening, she does leave the chick pen to go and roost in the coop though. She is such a sweet bird and obviously well socialized by WichitaKidd and his family. If I squat down she comes to me to be picked up.

Any ideas????
Does it have a pasty butt or diarrhea? Those chicks were so healthy acting the week I had them so I can't imagine what could be going on. Maybe check for mites?? They seem to come from no where. Are you feeding medicated feed? I have some chicks due to hatch today and if I have any splash I will let you have them. I'll just get some more eggs from Eileen later. She said most of her girls are molting or slowed down right now but I had already told her I wanted to buy more eggs if they picked back up. You've sure had rotten luck with the birds lately.

I'm sure it had a capacitor, probably for the flash. Batteries don't have enough power for a decent flash so many of them have a capacitor to build up a charge for it. That's an exact example of power disconnected and still getting a shock. We used to discharge capacitors by shorting across them. You wouldn't believe the sparks they can throw. I did that once to an old TV set that had been sitting for weeks in the trash in the weather. The thing arced like crazy!!!
Talk about getting shocked. I remember the first time I got shocked. I was a way too inquisitive kid. There was a Christmas bulb that got broken, but the middle part was still in tact. So being the curious child I was I decided to plug the cord in and screw the remainder of the bulb in to see if it still lit. I was the one that got lit. It was one of those things I snuck to my room to check out and my mother never knew about it. I was always doing something dumb because I had the need to know!!!

I did early potty training too. You can tell when a child is ready. It is driving me nuts when that my daughter in laws have 2 and 3 year olds and both are saying the kids will be trained when they are ready. How ready do you have to be??? My two year old granddaughter was grabbing at herself when she had to pee. I just don't understand what they are waiting for. I started training all of my kids at 18 months or slightly younger and all but one of them took right to it. And they were very proud to wear big girl or big boy panties and thrilled when they went! We still had to diaper at night for a while but that caught on later. Why make a child walk around in a wet diaper when they are perfectly capable of knowing when they are going to the bathroom?? My oldest was totally potty trained by the time she was a year old. She had had an allergic reaction to a stomach medicine when she was about 9 months old. It caused her urine to blister her. So she cried every time she had to pee until all of the medicine along with all of the blisters were healed. She became very aware when she had to pee because of it. I took advantage of the situation and she sailed right into being potty trained because peeing in a little potty didn't hurt like peeing in a diaper.

Makes me laugh. My doctor used to say my middle son would wean himself when he was ready. Well the little tyke was 3 years old and talking quite plainly but still insisted on picking up my shirt and helping himself. I was working full time, but he still would catch me when I got home. I got pregnant with my youngest son but still didn't dry up. I finally had to say, "Let's do that later. Do you want some juice?" My neighbor used to tell him his mama was going to have to go to kindergarten with him so he could have "titty" (her words) at recess!

Did David keep her in a pen all the time when he wasn't socializing with her? Maybe that is just what she is used to.

Chicken Danz are those Splash Marans you are talking about? I have been looking everywhere for some that are not over priced, yes I tend to pay good money for a good product just not great money for a good product..
