Consolidated Kansas

I have some mixed banties hatching. So cute!! Some are yellow and some are black. Last I looked there were 11, one piped and 2 that I couldn't hang on to the hen long enough to know what is going on with. One felt cold so I assume it won't hatch, but they can turn out to be a surprise sometimes. That hen is fierce.

I am going to order some of those mouse traps like Danz is using. If anyone wants to go in on the order, they have price break downs for the number that is ordered. Free shipping. At the numberI am ordering now, the price is $12.49 each, if 12 or more is ordered, they drop to just under $10 each. So, if anyone wants any and is in East Central Ks. I could meet you in Emporia, Topeka, Osage City, or ??

Trish, so sorry about Dana....

Maidenwolf, if you don't already have any, BluKote is a great product to keep on hand. Its main ingredient is Gentian Violet so it will stain anything it touches, a bluish purple but it is great for spraying on wounds to prevent the others from pecking.

Cherwill, so funny about the icebergs!

Chickies-duckies, I got a couple of those traps from an order Danz placed and I've been so bad about getting them set up. The mouse problem in my coop disappeared after I killed two mice, and the other one I planned to use at our barn. I finally got it set up at the barn last night so I'm curious to go check on it today and see if it caught any.

I got some really bad news this morning from my son about his girlfriend Dana. He said the Drs told them at the last appt. the other day that the tumor has grown back already & is bigger than before they removed it, it's really fast growing & aggressive, & they think it has already spread to her brain. They also did find a tumor in her lung. The prognosis is very poor for her & it's so very sad, she is only in her early 30s. My son is pretty much beside himself & it just breaks my heart for both of them. He called me this morning to ask my advice on supporting her since I have already been through this with my late husband. I told him I didn't have any magic pill or magical advice, just to be supportive, be there for her, & listen. I also told him no matter how much he is coming apart inside he has to be the strong one for her because I know she is terrified, who wouldn't be. So they both need your prayers to make it through this. I have cried off & on all day every time I think about it. Dana is the sweetest girl & I had hoped they could get married, she has made my son very happy to this point. He said today that he isn't one to whine about life not being fair, but this sucks & I agree.

Trish, praying for Dana, your son and you. It's so hard to see our children hearts hurting and nothing we can do to fix it.

BluKote does STAIN EVERYTHING it touches, I switched to Nu Stock and have great success without the stain. I use Nu Stock on the other animals also.

Candace Harding's 21-year-old son was killed last night. Please keep her family in your thoughts and prayers. (Candace is Fern, Lily and Jasmine's breeder)

Ok I have seen blue kote but have not seen the nu stock can i get it at a farm store like TSC or orschlen? The chick is lively and still holds her pecking order place in the tiny little flock so she isnt down or weak which is wonderful .I wa afraid there may be inernal damage I could not see. I opened up their litttle play area and she flew up on my lap and cheeped at me for breakfast.

They will be 4 weeks tuesday, alot of the time the chicks sit on the non lighted side of the brooder, when should I start letting them sleep without a light all together? I have them on a bedtime cycle, I turn the lights off in that room at the same time every night and they snuggle up and go to sleep, Iget the occassional few who are up and down all night and didnt know if going completely dark will help with that, yes I use a red light. I cant wait until they can move outside to their grow out pen,, which I stil have to set up... Anyway thank you all for advice and help.

Thank you all for input on what to use for my birds. I found this: http://edis.ifas.ufl.edu/ps044 , but I am absolutely stumped because none of these sound like what we have here. I just have a few birds sneezing and one bird that will "caw" and extend his neck when he's eating. I lost a BR pullet one day, just out of the blue found her dead. When I picked her up by the legs to take her body to the burn barrel, there was a watery fluid that drained from her nostrils and beak, presumably from her chest. My 2-3 year old SLW rooster, in a separate pen, died the next day, but had no fluid. None of my birds have discharge from the nostrils (except a tiny bit sometimes when they sneeze) and no discharge from the eyes. Is it possible we're just dealing with a cold and the 2 died from secondary infections or complications? Everyone is eating and drinking well, no unthriftiness or fluffed feathers, no bad smells, no lesions, no swelling, some have brown diarrhea, but that only started after I used the Duramycin in their water and has started to clear up now. I am just not sure what to do. I should have taken the dead birds to the vet for cultures and necropy, but I just didn't know any better at the time. I really hate to just wait it out, but I don't want to treat for something they don't have. Anyone have any clues? I'm so lost!

Lizzy,
I hope share pictures of your horses when you get them "home". :)

Danz,
Sorry about your Fed Ex! I've finally got a good Fed-Ex guy! Since we're out here on the edge of nowhere, Fed Ex would contract people to deliver in our area, it was terrible and added several days to delivery. A few years ago we called all of our distributors and told them to only use UPS or USPS. Now we are ok with Fed Ex, but if the regular route driver has a sub it can be very aggravating. Our USP guy is great. What kind of mouse traps do you use? I missed that post, this thread moves at a pretty fast pace.
