Consolidated Kansas

I got back last night from Sedalia, MO! The ASBC had their E. Nationals there and it was SO. MUCH. FUN!!! I took lots of photos. I won BV (best variety) for a Blue Partridge. I also placed 1st for a Splash Pullet in both Open Shows. I also placed 4th and 5th on a couple of my blue cockerels-- and they had a large class! So I was really happy about that. My oldest son did really well in the Juoniors Program, too! He won 2nd Place in Intermediate Showmanship for Juniors, and placed 1st on a Splash cockerel, 2nd place on a splash pullet and 3rd Place on a splash pullet. Pictures to follow:

On an overall happier note, my daughter gave birth to her second child this morning. He is 10 lbs. 4 oz. He was born at home with a midwife. I'll be going out (to Reno) to see them later in the week.
Congratulations! It's so nice to hear some good news among all the bad!
Three weeks and three days old, my fifteen chicks and two ducklings spent their first night outside (under a heatlamp). With the temp getting down to twenty-six degrees last night I was very happy to see them all happy and running around their run this morning. Though it shouldn't surprise me any more, ya'lls advice has always been spot on!

That is the web site for the mouse traps I will be ordering.
Yep that is where I bought mine.

Congrats on the wins. I hope you are feeling better as well!!
That is very sad news about Candace and Kelsey. I know the other boys must be very very sad as well. Life is too precious to ever take for granted.
Trish I am so sorry about Dana. Please don't give up and encourage her and your son to keep the faith. There is a Cancer Treatment center in Tulsa. Those places do miracles. Please have her check into it.
All of you are in my prayers.

I do feel better today. I never even got my birds fed yesterday. Poor things. They all had some food and water but they were scrounging pretty bad by this morning. So as soon as I got home from church today, I changed clothes and got busy. My silly little pig died this morning. It hadn't been long when I found him. He was just steadily loosing weight even though I had wormed him and given him everything I could think of to get him going. I really think he was a sick little pig to begin with. He just didn't do well. I'm kind of glad now that he was "mean" so it didn't break my heart so bad.
So I've been out burning. We had quite a pile of old wood scraps and junk that needed burning. I figured it was the best way to dispose of him. Without knowing if he was harboring an infection or something I didn't want to recycle him as food for any of the other animals.
I am still nursing the little SFH chick. She is still not able to stand and can't eat or drink on her own. But today she was willingly drinking from the dropper. I'm trying very hard to be optimistic. I have some corid in the other chicks water to be safe and I sprayed their bin with oxine. I hope there won't be any more ill birds. I really would like this one to recover though because it is a pullet and I can use every pullet I have.

Sharol, that's wonderful news!!! What a big baby boy!

That's great Joe, that has to be a relief to get them settled outside.

Congrats Hawkeye! Looks like you both had a blast. How are you feeling?

Sorry about your pig Danz. That sounds hopeful about your chick.

BluKote does STAIN EVERYTHING it touches, I switched to Nu Stock and have great success without the stain. I use Nu Stock on the other animals also.
So true. I have not heard of Nu Stock - will have to look into that.

Candace Harding's 21-year-old son was killed last night. Please keep her family in your thoughts and prayers. (Candace is Fern, Lily and Jasmine's breeder)
I hardly know what to say - that is so awful. Michelle, thank you for letting us know. My thoughts will most certainly be with Candace.

HEChicken, do you know why the gentian violet prevents pecking? I have just gentian violet, would that be a good substitute?
The bluish color apparently prohibits pecking - I'm not sure why, if it is just a color/vision thing. They are programmed to home in on red for blood and if the wound is blue instead of red, they don't pick it, I think is how it works.

Congratulations - that is a huge baby! Can't wait to see pics!

Yay for the ducklings. Isn't it amazing how tough they really are?

Congratulations on doing so well at the show!!!

My silly little pig died this morning.
I'm so sorry about the pig.

Wow everyone it was a busy day for all. Barely got any work done today and I have a dr appt in the city tomorrow I hate driving to the city. GGRRRR, So wont get much done tomorrow either but it needs to get done, I am trying to lump all my running together so I dont waste gas. I hope everyone had a productive weekend and enjoyed the nice weather today.

Well I guess I'll be looking for a bigger pig now. I want to be sure the next one has a healthy start.
I heard from my duck guy tonight and he is already planning to come next weekend to get the ducks that aren't hatched yet. He also wants my excess cockerels so I need to coax these wild boys into a pen this week and get their wings clipped. I am ready to make some $$$ instead of spending some.
DH just took one of the little lemon cuckoo chicks out to dispatch him. He was spastic, couldn't walk upright, couldn't drink without choking and was a third the size of the other 9 chicks. I tried giving him chick saver and he couldn't swallow. He also appeared to be blind. He said it wasn't fair for him to have to live like that and wait for him to die. I am glad I have him around cause I just can't kill anything like that.
My soy beans got cut and they didn't even fill the truck. What a terrible waste. My farmer said they were still better than any of the others he had planted. I got a rubbermaid bin of them out of the bottom of the combine so that will make my chipmunks happy. They really like them.
I talked to a guy this evening and he is going to find out what to spray on an area that won't grow anything but weeds and Johnson Grass. I want to kill it out and then plant melons and pumpkins there next summer for the birds. I haven't had any luck growing anything there and it has been planted a few times with farm crops but never does any good. So I figure if I can get the melons and stuff to grow out there for the birds at least it won't just become a weed patch.
I sure wish my body was as ambitious as my mind. I would get so much done.

Sorry about the chick Danz hope you dont have anymore loses out of them. I also am going to do melons and pumpkins next year just for the birds. I have seeds cant wait to plant them and hopefully be successful

Oh, my the horrible things that happen in life, so sorry for all going thru these tough time. You are all in my prayers.
Congradulations on the new grandbaby. Wow what a whopper!!!

danz, sorry about the lemon cockoo, I hate when I have to go that.

I have read several posts, just really tired tonight.

Hawkeye~~~~~ WAY TO GO!!!!!! I am so proud of you!! Wow BV award That is so cool. I'm sure you are really beat! Hope you take it easy, and rest some this week somehow.
Now if I can do a third as good as you I will be happy, but I don't have any hopes at this time. Just too many good birds will be there.

Hawkeye, Congrats to you and your son!!!!! That's just so exciting and I'm so very happy you had a great time. You needed it after the week you had.

Danz, so sorry about your pig and your chick. Sheesh, that's the pits. I have to admit that I'm kind of relieved about the pig because he was such a crazy thing he worried me for you. Still, I know it's a loss for you and that's just sad.

I had a friend come over today and there was the latest bunch of chicks in the craft room and she stopped and looked at them and said "Wait, these can't be the same chicks as when I was here last time." I laughed because this group looks very much like the last group, seriously. There are about the same #'s of German New Hamps, Alohas and Speckled Sussex looking chicks and the exact same number of total chicks. I assured her that no, this was a different crew, the last crew just went to their own pen outside and there was another group in between the two.

Well, that's it for me till tomorrow!

Yes It has been a long day and I am however relieved that it is over. I am going to finish cleaning out my newly remodled brooder lol and grow out pen is finished so I can move this batch out there when they are ready and move my new batch in soon, as soon as they are ready to come live at my house. A new week hopefully brings new chicks and happy happy kids.
