Consolidated Kansas

On an overall happier note, my daughter gave birth to her second child this morning. He is 10 lbs. 4 oz. He was born at home with a midwife. I'll be going out (to Reno) to see them later in the week.

Congratulations! My in-laws have babies that big, but they're all Amazon women!

I got back last night from Sedalia, MO! The ASBC had their E. Nationals there and it was SO. MUCH. FUN!!! I took lots of photos. I won BV (best variety) for a Blue Partridge. I also placed 1st for a Splash Pullet in both Open Shows. I also placed 4th and 5th on a couple of my blue cockerels-- and they had a large class! So I was really happy about that. My oldest son did really well in the Juoniors Program, too! He won 2nd Place in Intermediate Showmanship for Juniors, and placed 1st on a Splash cockerel, 2nd place on a splash pullet and 3rd Place on a splash pullet. Pictures to follow:

Congratulations to you, too. I can see why those beautiful birds won.

I do feel better today. I never even got my birds fed yesterday. Poor things. They all had some food and water but they were scrounging pretty bad by this morning. So as soon as I got home from church today, I changed clothes and got busy. My silly little pig died this morning. It hadn't been long when I found him. He was just steadily loosing weight even though I had wormed him and given him everything I could think of to get him going. I really think he was a sick little pig to begin with. He just didn't do well. I'm kind of glad now that he was "mean" so it didn't break my heart so bad.
So I've been out burning. We had quite a pile of old wood scraps and junk that needed burning. I figured it was the best way to dispose of him. Without knowing if he was harboring an infection or something I didn't want to recycle him as food for any of the other animals.
I am still nursing the little SFH chick. She is still not able to stand and can't eat or drink on her own. But today she was willingly drinking from the dropper. I'm trying very hard to be optimistic. I have some corid in the other chicks water to be safe and I sprayed their bin with oxine. I hope there won't be any more ill birds. I really would like this one to recover though because it is a pullet and I can use every pullet I have.

I'm glad you're feeling better, and sorry about the pig and chick. I hope the chick pulls through.

Three weeks and three days old, my fifteen chicks and two ducklings spent their first night outside (under a heatlamp). With the temp getting down to twenty-six degrees last night I was very happy to see them all happy and running around their run this morning. Though it shouldn't surprise me any more, ya'lls advice has always been spot on!

That's good. I think I always keep mine under a heat lamp longer than necessary; DH and I have a continuing disagreement about that whenever we have chicks.

DH just took one of the little lemon cuckoo chicks out to dispatch him. He was spastic, couldn't walk upright, couldn't drink without choking and was a third the size of the other 9 chicks. I tried giving him chick saver and he couldn't swallow. He also appeared to be blind. He said it wasn't fair for him to have to live like that and wait for him to die. I am glad I have him around cause I just can't kill anything like that.

I can't either, even though I know it's the kindest thing. I've taken dogs in to the vet when it was necessary, but I couldn't do anything like that myself.

We didn't do much today. We had some friends over, one from Topeka and one from Wichita. It's not like we live THAT far apart, but with our various schedules we don't see each other often. We used to have movie weekends and they kept getting cancelled (mostly by me, because of last minute family things) and now it's been about a year since we'd seen each other last. We started aiming for just one weekend day we could all get together instead of a full weekend and even that's hard to coordinate. I got mad the last time we cancelled and told DH the next date we picked would not be cancelled for any reason. Sure enough, my aunt and uncle, who are visiting from California, decided they wanted to fix ribs for the whole family tonight. DH answered when my aunt called and she told him not to make plans for Sunday. He said we already had and she told him to cancel them but he said no. We just spent a week in Oklahoma with them and will see them plenty before they go back home. I really enjoyed the day with our friends and I refuse to feel guilty about it!

Cherwill I remember that last time and how upset you were about it. I'm really glad you stood your ground and had your girls day out yesterday - time with friends is important too!

I have read several posts, just really tired tonight.

Hawkeye~~~~~ WAY TO GO!!!!!! I am so proud of you!! Wow BV award That is so cool. I'm sure you are really beat! Hope you take it easy, and rest some this week somehow.
Now if I can do a third as good as you I will be happy, but I don't have any hopes at this time. Just too many good birds will be there.
Thank you, Rosie!! I had such a great time! One family wiped out the entire show-- they brought silkies and cleaned up on Grand Champion, Reserve, Featherleg, and on and on... They just have fantastic silkies! Touchwood silkies is who they are. This is the norm for them, I have been talking to her since last year-- back when I was debating on who to buy my first pair from! I also bought a really NICE pair of blacks from Birds of Paradise (Texas) at the show, too. She never sells eggs or chicks-- ever. So when I realized her blacks were there, I jumped! I got a cockerel and a pullet from her. They have nice BIG crests on them and are black as night-- sheeny shiny green in the sun! Amazing! I can't wait to start my black line! I'm going to need to out cross at some point, so this coming Spring, I'll see if I can get something from Touchwood Silkies (IL), they have some of the best blacks in the country! They are all from Premier blood lines. But the birds I bought are just as nice and have some similar bloodlines, and even Touchwood bought a couple pullets from Birds of Paradise, too. I figured they had to be good-- otherwise she would not have bought them. Touchwood is pretty picky.

I sure hope your Rosecombs beat the pants off those other birds! You know, you could totally do it!! I did much better than I expected to! All of that culling and being careful with my breeding worked out. I know you are a super careful breeder too-- I think you should give yourself credit for that!

I can't wait to see how your show goes! Takes lots of pictures and be sure to report back what happened!!

I'm going to be showing at the Kansas Classic in November, too! My son wants to show in the Juniors, and I'm going to do Open again. I'm going to bring all the birds I brought this time (minus the two birds I sold at the show) and then see if I can get my new blacks tested-- they are show quality birds and should be shown off! I'm hoping they will have a testing day ahead of time or something. As soon as I get some time, I'll take a picture of my new black pair and post them.

Hawkeye, Congrats to you and your son!!!!! That's just so exciting and I'm so very happy you had a great time. You needed it after the week you had.

Danz, so sorry about your pig and your chick. Sheesh, that's the pits. I have to admit that I'm kind of relieved about the pig because he was such a crazy thing he worried me for you. Still, I know it's a loss for you and that's just sad.

I had a friend come over today and there was the latest bunch of chicks in the craft room and she stopped and looked at them and said "Wait, these can't be the same chicks as when I was here last time." I laughed because this group looks very much like the last group, seriously. There are about the same #'s of German New Hamps, Alohas and Speckled Sussex looking chicks and the exact same number of total chicks. I assured her that no, this was a different crew, the last crew just went to their own pen outside and there was another group in between the two.

Well, that's it for me till tomorrow!
Thank you Karen! So funny about the chicks! You are catching up with Danz!

I'm SO GLAD that you did not cancel! Good for you and don't feel guilty. I remember over the summer when you had to cancel and felt terrible about it. You need to fill your OWN cup too-- you need your friends! I can not handle last minute plans-- that does not usually work for us. We are pretty well planned out on our calendar. So when I make plans to do something, I DO IT. It doesn't matter what last minute plans come up-- unless someone is in the hospital, or something like that, it won't change my plans. My goal is to keep my friends and family by always following through! I've ended up ditching friends because they couldn't keep their plans with me, and it makes you feel terrible when someone cancels on you. We just had that happen to us a couple weeks ago. I had our day planned out and we knew what times the soccer games were, and everything and changed some things around so we could meet up with another couple for dinner. They called us that afternoon and said they'd be late and we'd just do dessert. I ran out to town and came home with two pies from Village Inn and then we waited and waited... no word. I had spent the day cleaning house when we were there and had taken two days prior to that cleaning up all the rooms, getting laundry, etc done. Everything was perfect. They finally called pretty late that evening and said they were going to cancel, they were too tired to come over! I was soooo upset. That is the second time they've cancelled on us, and I'm done with them. Not again. They used to be our best friends, and they've gotten really flaky. I'm ready to move on, I was hurt for several days after that. It still makes me angry thinking of it. The thing is-- that my brother who I NEVER get to see also came in that weekend and I wanted to see him soooo badly, but I refuse to change my plans because these were made first, and put someone else out. And I totally got burned on that, I could have spent a great day with him. :( Ah well. Point is-- I'm so glad you had a great time and enjoyed your friends.

X2! :)

OH, I totally forgot everyone else! Thank you all for the congrats and pep! We had so much fun and I'm still really pleased with our trip.

Danz, I was really sorry to hear your pig died. What a mess he was! But still-- terrible that he just was wasting away. That whole thing was just crazy, but I didn't expect to hear that. Seems like you've had a really rough time lately, and I'm so sorry.

Trish, yeah, I'd be worried about where the dogs are going too. I know around here, people do shoot dogs. Not me... I only want to! LOL Maybe you can run down to those neighbors who have the goats and introduce yourself when the dogs take off and tell them who you are and what the dogs are about, etc. They will have a harder time shooting them if they know their names and how important they are to you. I was surprised to hear about the fireworks, though. Don't often see/hear them at this time of year. Interesting.

MaidenWolf, congrats on the new grow out pen! :)

Congratulations! My in-laws have babies that big, but they're all Amazon women!
I had and love big healthy babies, however it's an indicator of future diabetes...

I got mad the last time we cancelled and told DH the next date we picked would not be cancelled for any reason.
AWESOME!
It's not easy but sometimes you have to say NO!

So funny!!

I always keep my chicks under heat for too long but the ducks just don't get much. They do great. I have lost too many chicks to them getting chilled and piling. I'd rather be sure.

So is one of the winners Josie's little pullet? I can't help but wonder. She is so pretty.

The difference between she and I is that she is organized and has hers nicely separated into organized pens. I have chickens everywhere. I really am trying to accommodate the new breeds so they are separate but I have a lot more to do. At least she doesn't have all these other critters running around as well! When she starts buying peacocks, geese, doves, pigs, pheasant, and chipmunks I will start to worry!

I have very little company and I HATE having company because I always work myself into a fever, (except my dear friends who already know what a slob I am and accept me as I am.)
But I have made major plans, purchased groceries to feed a group a meal, cleaned and cleaned, and then had last minute cancellations. Then I am am always so nice about it. Why? I have no idea. And the excuse is always such a lame one. " I have a beer tasting I got invited to, and this is pretty rare." This one came after setting a date 2 months in advance and by one of my own family.
I have a family member and his family who have planned to come at least 10 times and cancelled after they should be here. The excuse is usually money. But wouldn't they know before the last minute they can't afford gas? I could go on and on. But the worst part is they always invite themselves and then cancel. Go figure.
But worse yet are the people that call and I drop plans for them so they can come buy birds and they never show up or call. I don't do any cleaning or anything cause I don't invite strangers into my house, but I do have to arrange my schedule and sit at home waiting.
I really need to get myself busy today. I probably say that every day!

Hopefully the weather will be pleasant and I can get some work done.

Oh about the nustock, I have seen that stuff. I will go get some. What are some things it is used for?
Nu Stock is for skin related ailments. Anything wrong with their skin, cuts, burns, swelling, soreness, scale mites, promotes rapid healing. It's for horses, dogs, cattle too. I wouldn't use it on a cat or where a dog could lick it.

I only bring this story up to say Nu Stock is what they use to help their roosters heal. The story is that some were purchasing the nu stock over in NE. Oklahoma and talking about how great Nu Stock was for healing up their fighting roosters and an off duty officer was there as a customer...they were busted soon after. Okay, enough about that! BYC will lock up this thread if get we comment on that subject.

Husband has some high powered German short hairs for bird hunting, we've used it on them. Horses for anything with their skin, it promotes healing and hair growth. Cattle after dehorning & after castrating.

I wonder if I can use it on my husband's head for promoting hair growth?

Oh I see, but is there anything in it to stop the other birds from pecking at the wound? The reason for using Blu-Kote is to promote healing (as I understand it the Gentian Violet does contain healing properties) but also stop the other birds from pecking at the wound, allowing the injured bird to remain with the flock. It sounds like the Nu Stock promotes healing but the bird would still have to be separated until the wound is closed over?
