Good morning, Joanna, and welcome to BYC. I'd be tempted to hold off on getting the roost. Given your flock size and newness as an owner he might present more negatives than positives. Good luck.

Welcome to BYC Joanna. Chickens are so much fun! You can find so much helpful information here and answers to all your chicken questions. Do some research before getting a rooster, you may want to wait till spring.
Thank you for joining us at Backyard Chickens, Joanna. It's very nice to meet you. 
Hens will lay eggs without benefit of a rooster, and be less stressed without one. The eggs would be infertile, which is great for folks who worry they may crack an egg & find a growing chick.

Welcome to our flock!
Personally, I've got my yard on lock down, not adding anymore birds until we get through winter. Going out in those cold temps is a pain in the butt, and adding birds and taking the time to integrate correctly is easier done in warmer weather!

Hi, Joanna, welcome! A lot of us were city slickers before we came to the dark, er, I mean the SUNNY side, and got chickens and leaped into country life! You start with two chickens in a tiny coop and then you wake up one morning and realize you have to feed six cows, 20 goats, 30 chickens, a flock of geese and ducks and you wonder, how the heck did THAT happen?!? We call it "chicken math." Well, don't say we didn't warn you! Happy chickening!
