Yep,against my wishes hubby tried to use the chickens it already killed. I told him he'd have better luck with cat food or tuna since that was what it was spotted eating at a neighbors. We've been here 12 years and never had a coon problem until this week. It killed my neighbors chickens by digging under their flimsy pen and when it ran out their it started on mine.

I was wondering why the emu started sleeping in the back corner over there. Unfortunately they can not get into the chickens pen. We'll see how it goes. I have 3 traps out in the two pens, and the chickens are on lock down.

Hey Munch, do you have a pair of Yellow Gold Pheasants? I have a young one, not sure what it is yet...leaning towards girl - no spurs yet. Anyho, if so will you sell eggs this breeding season? I have Red Golds, Lady A's, Ringneck and a young Silver hen I think. Need a male for that too, Ha Ha

EGGS, EGGS, EGGS , I use the ones that candle clear, or the ones that didnt hatch. Never caught a cat with that bait, many coons, and skunks

Apparently they like persimmons. I harvested one that was up in a persimmon tree eating the fruit today. I am gonna bait my trap with persimmons and see how it works.

I use sections of sponge soaked in oil from tuna/liquid from canned salmon in hard plastic screw top containers that have holes drilled in them (good for three nights). The traps are set up off of the ground with 2 2"x2"'s running under either side of traps, and twenty pound pavers on top (smart ones like to tip traps). This results in keeping the traps clean, the yard/ground around traps from being pulled in with digging/waste falls through. And, the coon gets nothing to eat.

They can then be pithed, dumped, trap reset and ready to go again in about ten minutes.

We keep three set at all times (heavy pred/vermin load).

We have a real problem with raccoons eating my koi fish. Everytime we put cat food or tuna in the trap, I'd find the family cat locked in it. I was told marshmellows work, but of course my cat ate the marshmellows and got stuck in it again. I am going to try the "shiny thing" idea tonite. This is our first year with chickens, but I think my pen is pretty critter proof. I probably just jinxed myself. Does anybody know why the raccoons attack the chickens ?? Is it a territory thing or do they eat them ??

Do you have problems with fire ants there? I do here in Palm Beach County. When I bait traps with stinky canned cat food or canned sardines I have to place the opened can in another slightly larger container that has about an inch of soapy water in it. That way the ants cannot swim across the water to get to the opened can. Otherwise they'd swarm the bait & many critters won't oppose them.

Also, do you have plans for what you'll do with the trapped raccoon? If you do & it's "don't ask don't tell" that's fine with us. But if you need ideas, we can help. It's good to have your plan in place before you trap your pest...
