I just found a raccoon on the roof of my coop this evening!
So, I went around and screwed shut all 12 of the doors to the yards so he couldn't wiggle his way in there! I feel so skittish right now! I'm going to borrow a friends trap and "rehome" him, but I'm worried that now I will just always have this problem! How can I be sure that my birds are safe!??! Can anyone tell I just need a cold hose turned on me or something!??! LOL
Didn't catch anything last night, but I will keep the trap set. Thats how I caught the first one, didn't even know he was around because I have only been catching possums. I wouldn't "rehome" them aarron, unless that "home" is "out of this world" for good. They will only become a problem for someone else.
I too would like to use a live trap - mostly to get the feral cats. Unfortunately, my own 2 dogs and 4 cats are free to run in and out the doggy door to the house. It may seem obvious to lock them all up at night when I am trapping, but my home is also over-run with teens and young adults - far too old to be trained to keep doors shut.
Am I delusional thinking my own dogs and cats are going to ward off predators at night? I think they have a good chance at keeping wildlife away, but those feral cats often come over to pick fights at night.
I don't know what kind of dogs you have, but dogs are the only thing I use to keep varmints and pedators away. Well, I guess we have a few barn cats to keep the mice down around there.
Many dogs won't do anything about a predator. We have 3 great pyrenees dogs. They live to guard. I've seen them take on 5 coyotes. The great pyrenees are not for everyone. They need LOTS of space and part of their protection plan is barking. It doesn't bother us. If we hear them, we just know the varmint partol is on duty.
To answer the OP's original question. We had the problem of the coons reaching in and getting the food without going in the trap. Now use a plastic tie down strap (zip lock) around a sardine can centered in the trap. Treat offering, Jiffy peanut butter. Coons re-homed to freezer camp 8 in the last few months. Trapping and relocating raccoons is not legal here.
We set our trap periodically just to try to keep the population down. Lost my beautiful white muscovey last night early, I hadnt even put them to bed yet. Liam was big and white and beautiful. I hope to find another white male.
