Coon Massacre

Ive been having a coon problem it seems. Last week I had forgotten to close their coop door for the night. Because of my laziness I lost two of my six chickens. I was angry and upset. I thought I knew how he had gotten in so I fixed the problem..So the 8th was my birthday and I started my morning out as I normally do.

Checking my Facebook and emails before suiting up to go outside. Dealing with the ice I slipped my way down to the chicken coop where I heard one of the girls making a horrible noise. Rushing as fast as I dare over the ice I ripped open the door only to watch a coon bite the head off the screaming birds neck. I screamed in horror as I ran at the beast, scaring it and chasing it away.


Coming back I found just destruction. Feathers everywhere and my four remaining chickens dead. I'm beyond upset, bawling in the middle of the coop holding a headless, thrashing bird as I make sure the others are dispatched and not suffering. I dont know what to do. I dont have the means to buy a bunch of new birds and I'm limited to where I can drive due to a gas guzzling vehicle. Now I'm stuck with no birds and a broken heart. Happy birthday to me.

To top it off I legally can not own. Weapon due to growing medically so if I do manage to borrow a live trap and I get the basterd(s) who did this I have no way to humanly take care of it... I mean I could try to gas it, I do know how to make a co2 chamber. But I don't think I have anything big enough to do that with. If I trap it would A.C take care of it?

I could. I do have the wire for I think but everything else I'm clueless on.

I am SOOOOO sorry you have to deal with this! As far as animal control goes, give them a call. In Maryland, some AC offices will loan you a trap and come get it when it triggers. If not, maybe a neighbor will dispatch it for you.
And if you genuinely can't afford more chickens, talk to your local 4H office. More than likely, some local youth will have a large enough hatch to share with you.

Trap them then put the trap in a barrel full of water

If you can trap it in a box trap you could fill up something with water and drop it in.

I have two like linked below. Another I am not able to quickly on internet also available at Tractor Supply Company is solar powered and used on a little chicken tractor.

You will need either some fencing poles and pole insulators or insulators you can attach directly to the coop. I use latter setup for the chicken tractor. It is not setup currently or I would have pictures. @HowardE is well versed in explaining fencing. You will not need much to keep the critters out.
