Hello All! For several years my husband has propogated a product called EM1 (effective microorganism); we've used it in all types of applications (it's especially good for compost, & un-skunkifying the dog). Back to chickens...
We line the floor of our coop with cardboard before we cover it with shavings. It's easier to pull out the cardboard & shavings, & into the compost ball it goes. We started spraying the cardboard & shavings with EM1. The results have been a huge reduction in the coop smell. And, as an added bonus, it all composts in just 6 weeks, which is great for chicken litter. Here are the links for what EM1 is, and where to buy it. (I am not selling it, but it's easy to reproduce using water & molasses)

Anyway, I thought I'd pass the tip along because it has many livestock & farm applications. And our flock has been healthier since we've started using it.

Do you know how to make it from water and molasses? Does it need anything else added. Per the ingredients list on the EMI it says water and molasses are inactive .
