I never saw it. Where is the link?

Under the avatar of OP. " Veiw My BYC Page" click on that

Not bad, not bad. Some good improvisation, there.

Wire under the roost. Good.
Add a dropping board beneath and you wont be having such a clean up chore.

4 chickens in that small pen? Bad.
They will turn it into a moonscape in no time, which will then become a chicken s**t mudbog at each rain.

By the way did you know a chicken poops out 70% of the food it takes in? Then they scratch it in real good and strip off the grass in the process... then the rain comes.

May I suggest you join the coop and run, put wheels on it so you can lift it wheelbarrow fashion and so move it around the yard every few days. That will alleviate much of the dreaded Muddy Moonscape Poo Bog Syndrome.

ok i figured each hen needed her "own" box ?

GIve them 10 and youll find 2 or 3 crowded into one favorite nest. Chickens are funny that way.
The rule of thumb is one 18 sq in nest for each 4 birds.

Knock out the first two and leave the others.

oh wow we read 4 sq ft per hen in a a pen, so we went 8x8. but this is temp space too. as for cleaning under neath the roost, so far the poop has fallen right through the 1/4"x14" mesh and we just hose it off into the green belt (woods) behind the pen.

Yes a tractor style is the ultimate plan, except large. we were also thinking about clipping them so they cant fly over the 5' fence and let them free range the yard alot. The yard is fenced and 60'x120'

so far the only squabbles are when one girl blocks the door into the roost and the others want in and cant, talk about pushing in-line

Is clipping a good idea?

That 4 sq. ft. business is a sham. That is for interior floor space in a coop intended primarily for roosting and nesting. It is NOT for overall living allowance.
It is one of the worst bits of advice circulating around the back yard chicken world and is responsible for more problems than anyone even knows.**

** Let me rephrase that, since we here at BYC do not like to "tell you what to do." Heaven forbid.
You can use 4 sq ft. per bird if you want and the chickens won't ever complain, guaranteed.
The commercial poultry business allows less than half that, after all. In fact, the 4 sq ft allowance preceded modern commercial practice. But you stop being a chicken person if you use it and become just another waste manager instead. Your choice.

EXCELLENT plan. I love it! So will your chickens.
Clip those wings and keep anything the birds can jump on away from the fence.

Also remember that everything loves a chicken dinner. In the urban environment, the domestic DOG is your enemy... make the fence secure against digging and keep the chickens inside it.

Sadly, this includes your own beloved mutt. If you have a dog of your own, watch it closely and do not turn your back on it until you are assured there is no problem. Even then, remain alert. Trust me on this.

Oh yes we are awre, she is a Boxer, hence anything that moves is sport. When they were in the uncovered puppy pen for a afternoon she just stared but still, we plan to put her in when they are out. Is there an article on clipping here? I wanna turn these girls loose for worm hunting
