It is one of several attributes that makes you human. It sets you and your higher order of intelligence apart from the rest of God's creatures.

There was a now-famous episode of the original Star Trek series called, "The Menagerie" that dealt with that very thing. Google it.

BTW, keep the avatar. It is priceless.

Good for you, my man. Glad to hear it.
And chickens, unlike some other critters, pay you back handsomely for your kindness.
Eggs, meat, manure, the occupation of a noble and fruitful pastime.... and endless fun are all there from chickens.

Try getting that from a pet tarantula.

There may be a lag, since the egg cycle has a certain inertia built in to it. It doesnt turn on and off like a switch.
Then again, not everything about chickens is cast in stone. I took in some transplant birds once, one of which promptly started laying that day - and never quit.
If they do, they do. No biggie.... they'll pick it back up when they are ready.
If they don't, well so much the better.

I know an old man who told me about his life during the Depression. He commented,
"My parents raised chickens, so we never went hungry. We always had grits and eggs, and when we tired of that - we had eggs and grits...
Anybody who was good at raising chickens and a decent garden had a little money in their pockets and food on the table."
