Better to have it right down on the ground/fully sealed all the way around than to have that little gap between the ground the the floor open. It's nearly guaranteed that rodents and other pests will move into the housing you provide that way.

if you can't build it a little foundation you can put a hardware cloth skirt on it to keep the rodents out.

Do you mean like on the bottom of the 2x4 that would be touching the ground? so the hardware cloth is flat on the ground?

It’s hard to explain but we will have a floor made of plywood with some sort of protection over the plywood and then pine shavings over that.

I know exactly what you mean, as this is my method. We bought the cheap vinyl peel-& stick sq. ft. tiles and lined the entire floor, including nesting box area, with them, then ran a bead of waterproofing sealer around the seams.

I use a combo of pine shavings, pine pellets & chopped straw in my deep bedding system. I don't keep water in their coop, but even when they scratch and toss the bedding around until they reach the vinyl, then poop, it scrapes right off.

It also makes cleaning easier, as I toss the bedding myself, the dried poops sift down to the vinyl, and I can scoop them out using my dustpan, then redistribute the bedding. I do this every other week in dry weather, more often if they spend more time in the coop because of rain.

Do you mean like on the bottom of the 2x4 that would be touching the ground? so the hardware cloth is flat on the ground?

Or trenched in.

The thing would be to cover any gaps that would allow rodents into the space between the ground and the coop floor.

That’s what my boyfriend uses to clean the coop even though we bought a brush that he can use too

I use oil cloth on the coop floor to protect the wood (even though the wood is painted and my bedding stays dry... but ya know, just in case). It's cheap and easy to install, and has held up great!

I laid down some cheap Linoleum. It’s water proof, so it keeps the joists and frame extra protected. I used just the standard roll from home depot. $20
I also use the pine flakes on top. Deep litter method. So once every 4-6 months I can easily scrape it out or quick shop brush it god forbid there’s enough mess under the wood shavings that need serious sanitation. That’s never happened yet but that was my thought behind it. I also lipped the flooring up the sides two inches to create a “bowl” so to speak. I agree with the others, if it’s a raised coup this is an idea. If it’s on the ground yeah, F it.
