I have installed a light in my chicken coop in hopes of keeping my hens laying more regularly this winter. The 60 watt bulb I put in the fixture doesn't seem bright at all. I wonder what wattage/how bright a light is needed to simulate a little extra daylight for the hens.

    Thanks,
    Tim

If you can read a newspaper in the coop the light is bright enough.

If it is too bright your chickens can act aggressive towards each other. Dim light keeps them calmer.

I use 1000w high pressure sodiums. You just have to make sure the ballasts are multi-tap. Most of them come factory wired for 277 volts.

I have a few of those but I use a 16W compact florescent an it does fine.

It's 14x20 and one hps works just fine. But its hard to keep them from eating my pot plants.
