Coop pics****

All your chicken coops make me feel like mine are living in a chicken third world country

I am loving all the coops and becoming enspired:) Below "was" my coop before Frankestorm hit:( The chickies had a nice 5 x 12 area on the left side next to the run.

Then Frankstorm hit / 2 trees smashed the right side of the shed, hauling them off flattened it:( however the chicken part left standing.

this was after we hauled the trees off

We had to remove the nesting boxes (below inside windows, and since the right hand wall was still intact, we dismantled it and slapped it up against what was left of the shed and ended up with this:

The chickens lived in my dining room for 3 days while we cleaned this up and reworked it..Soo, now I have atleast the floor intact, will have to take down what's left because the roof is not sitting on the sidewalls (but will suffice for the winter) and I can let my imagination run wild, rebuilding:) I think I'm going to enlarge the chicken coop area to atleast 12 x 10, which will leave me another 6/8 feet for storage.. I can put in the BIG windows I want, and just redesign the inside, so while I'm sad my shed was destroyed basically, I am excited by the redo. Thank goodness my "run" was undamaged..

Oh my that is awful, all that work from building it the first time, now repairing and having to rebuild. I hope you have some help, that's a lot of work.

Have you looks at the Woods open air coops, there are some photos on this site as well as there is a book that has some great ideas.
I think that if I had to rebuild I would like to build one of those. Not sure where you are but I think the Woods style does require a bit more space, like a country property

This is my first ever coop. In comparison to some coops it is a shanti house I guess but my chickens love it. My flock has just grown and I have 2 chicks and am extending this weekend. Names: Black - Nim, Brown - Octavia, White Big - Noel, White Foreground - Chelsea, White Background - Screech. The coop is currently 3m x 2.5m. I have 3 x 4 week old and 2 x 2.5 week old chicks in there. I live in South Africa and the weather is nice and warm so they love to be outside pecking around.I have trained my 4 dogs not to dig or break into the coop much to my delight

. I lost 4 x chicks to them before so it has taken a lot of time and 'tellings off' but I'm finally able to sleep at night.
The extension I am building tomorrow will lift the house off of the floor, add another 7.5m2 to the ground area and will feature more perches and plants for them to peck at.
The perch at the back on the far right is where I sit to play with them - they come and jump on me and play and let me stroke them. In South Africa I am yet to meet someone who is just keeping chickens for the pleasure of it. I will eat the white broilers but I will keep the Nim and Octavia although I'm pretty sure they are both roosters

. I am still in a learning process and am reasonably good with my hands so the coop will keep getting bigger and better.
