Hi friends! I have a 9x12 coop. I’m trying to figure out ventilation. We’re adding it this spring to the coop. Where is the best places to have ventilation? We were going to add windows, but I know that there can’t be drafts by the roosts.

Do you already have the building? If so, photos would be great. If you don't, do you have drawings/sketches of your planned coop layout, with measurements?

As a general rule "high up" is where you want your ventilation, to allow moisture and ammonia to rise and escape, but vents also need to be protected from rain and winds. So under roof overhangs, in the soffits, those are ideal spots for ventilation.

Yes, please show us some photos. Also, where are you located? Climate makes a great deal of difference.

Optimally, you want 1 square foot of ventilation per chicken located high up so that it's above the chickens heads when they're sitting on their roosts.

Heat and ammonia both rise so they need to be vented at roof level if at all possible. :)

I will get you guys some photos of the plan as soon as my husband has time to draw some actual plans. Lol

We did a coop last year, but I decided it wasn’t what I wanted, nor was it big enough for what I wanted. This time we are making every detail the way I want it. So I want to make sure I get everything right.

You could add holes at the roof that can be covered up by a board on the inside or out
Or like this above
