I read in a book not to place your coop too close to trees because the ticks lay eggs in tree bark and could infest your coop and birds. I hate ticks!!!! How far away from trees should I place the coop? I live in NC and am surrounded by pine trees (a tick's heaven!).

Thanks,
Cresty

My chickens eat ticks. But I would be more concerned about lightening. Pine trees are lightening rods and actually attract lightening.

I'd say go ahead and put your coop by the trees. In the summer it will be shady, which your chickens will appreciate. No one's situation is absolutely perfect, so you just have to work with what you have.

im not sure about putting a whole coop under trees...but i do move my quail house under the trees in winter because i noticed less dew falls on it so then in the morning theres no ice on it ........

My dh moved our 6 ft. chicken cage under a HUGE PECAN tree . plenty of shade . Except the front of the cage faces the EAST . The chicks are about 4 to 5 weeks old . Naturally we will be protecting them when it rains and OR cold . BUT we are from South Louisiana , and NOT to very cold here .

Is this ok ?

Since I don't live in the East I can't address the tick issue. I know people here in the mountains (where we do have ticks) put their coops under trees.

The biggest concern here is that predators will climb the trees and get down into the run and birds of prey will use the trees to land and pick out a chicken to take.

I know the chickens would love the shade - especially in those hot summers.
