Last night I heard a ruckus in one of my pens that I'm raising Cornish Crosses, so I went out to check but didn't see anything unusual, just a couple doing the mock-dominance thing. They were a bit rambunctious but nothing unusual. This morning I went to feed them and found blood on three of them around their faces. I didn't think they'd go that far at 4 1/2 weeks old but I guess they did. Anyone ever see anything like this in their experiences raising broilers? I thought about separating them but I really don't have anywhere to put them. Besides, wherever I'd put them unless by themselves, could lead to pecking at the wounds. No one seems to be pecking at them or anything today though. I expected they would but it doesn't seem to be happening.

How many birds and how much space do they have?

I have 27 birds in two pens - one with 19 is 5X8 and the other with 8 is 4X6. They seem to have plenty of elbow/wing room in there but that might not be what the rules of thumb say. They're 4 1/2 weeks old now and at 6 weeks we're planning on processing the biggest 7, and then 10 more at 7 weeks, and the last 10 at 8 weeks. If it's due to over-crowding that should alleviate it. I'm in the process of building a larger pen that's 15'X5' for future broilers.
