Our first batch of 17 we grew we had put in the freezer by 8 wks. We kept one alive for being a runt. We fed her a little bit a day...had kept her with our egg chickens. She started laying some time after 6 months....eggs would be irregular shaped sometimes. Some as big as duck eggs.
She has been the only chicken that we have actually seen lay an egg. She picked a spot by the porch so we watched her for 5 minutes or so and out came an egg! It was cool...the whole family got to see it. She was almost 10 months I believe when a fox got her....had gotten 3 hens during an ice storm. We were just about to end her life because we felt she was getting to big to have a good decent chicken life(could barely get in the coop anymore) the same day the fox got her.
Just guessing, she was at least 15 lbs. If you want to raise them larger than normal, cut back the feed a whole lot once full grown. The are very sweet and docile birds. They are better if they have a large pen....the poop alot and will lay in it. For there coop, we find it best to have them in a pen thats on the ground with dirt(so their poop dries out)...otherwise they will get messy come time for cleaning.
Dont leave them with feed 24/7...some could die from growing to fast or get injured legs. We feed twice a day and let them have lots of grass. They are gluttons so you will have to feed them in a spread out area so they dont find over the feed.
We have a new bactch of 20 this go around. They are very sweet, tasty, docile birds.
