cornish rock cross lay eggs?

The Cornish X I had was an excellent egg-layer and acted like a little puppy around us. She was an excellent pet. She laid very, very, very light beige eggs, 1 a day, sometimes 1 every other day. Her friends were 2 RSLs we got later. She had to have been 20 lbs or more.

It sounds like your girl may have been egg-bound.

I'm so sorry for your loss!

Well since she and the pen is acting fine and she was still warm I did her up. She wasn't egg bound, but prob. did lay that bloodly egg, cause she had forming eggs in her. Which the kiddies thought were really neatand had to touch and ask all kinds of questions about. My favorite from my 6 year old being wheres the shell, I thouhgt they made the shell than put the yolk inside it. And yes this egg behind her was a very light brown, but so was the other one. But I am still so mad!

Yes they will lay however if you want good egg production you must limit feed them. They start laying at about 22 weeks and are kept in the breeding flocks for abote 50 weeks. They lay a light browm egg that is very good size during the later weeks. I hauled 30 cases of eggs this week that were from a flock that was at 36 weeks of age. They were large eggs. My back can tell the diffince.

mine lay a egg a day and their a year and half old best foraging chickens around i dont even feed them when the weather is nice they hunt like a pack of wolfs chasing grass hoppers

We kept a cornish rock cross for about 2 years. A male, but it was interesting to see how big he got. We named him Charlie and he got as big as a turkey, waddling around and croaking. He was very friendly and was a favorite. We only kept him because he escaped into the bushes on butcher day and we couldn't get him out. Lucky thing. We lost him when some coyotes nabbed a few of our birds one evening when I was late closing up the coop. They definitely had a good meal with Charlie, but we were very sad to lose him. I don't dote on my chickens on but Charlie was our "little" survivor and was missed.

Well one of the 15lb hens just laid an egg this morning, nice big ole fat light brown egg

Our first batch of 17 we grew we had put in the freezer by 8 wks. We kept one alive for being a runt. We fed her a little bit a day...had kept her with our egg chickens. She started laying some time after 6 months....eggs would be irregular shaped sometimes. Some as big as duck eggs.

She has been the only chicken that we have actually seen lay an egg. She picked a spot by the porch so we watched her for 5 minutes or so and out came an egg! It was cool...the whole family got to see it. She was almost 10 months I believe when a fox got her....had gotten 3 hens during an ice storm. We were just about to end her life because we felt she was getting to big to have a good decent chicken life(could barely get in the coop anymore) the same day the fox got her.

Just guessing, she was at least 15 lbs. If you want to raise them larger than normal, cut back the feed a whole lot once full grown. The are very sweet and docile birds. They are better if they have a large pen....the poop alot and will lay in it. For there coop, we find it best to have them in a pen thats on the ground with dirt(so their poop dries out)...otherwise they will get messy come time for cleaning.

Dont leave them with feed 24/7...some could die from growing to fast or get injured legs. We feed twice a day and let them have lots of grass. They are gluttons so you will have to feed them in a spread out area so they dont find over the feed.

We have a new bactch of 20 this go around. They are very sweet, tasty, docile birds.

I have one CornishX pullet. She started laying just over 4 months old. She is now just over 6 months. I have not weighed her but, she seemed to have stopped or at least slowed down growing once she started laying. If I had to guess I would say she is all of 12lbs. Possibly more just do not want to exaggerate. She actually lays as well as my heritage breeds without question. Decent sized eggs every other day. I wouldn't say she looks to be petted but, doesn't seem to mind. I had incubated some eggs off her and a Dark Cornish rooster. The chicks are doing great!!! Not quite as large for the age as the CornishX but pretty close. Larger than Red Ranger chicks of the same age. So having said all that in my experience they seem to lay well! Feed conversion to eggs are obviously not as good as a leghorns but, I only feed her a handful of layer pellets a day and I would say its not as bad as one would believe.
