I agree about the good personalities of these birds! I love that BLR's coloring... but sheesh - - those scaly leg mites look to be in a pretty advanced stage. My girl Tanker had the same issue when I got her. I've been treating her ever since and she's had to stay in quarantine. Luckily they don't transfer through eggs.

Yeah, I noticed his funky legs, but he is the ONLY bird in all their pictures that seems to have this issue. I was just looking for some starter stock and the coloring is nice. Sadly, those are nothing compared to the case I got with a bantam OEGB I took in two years ago. That poor bitty little girl could barely walk and her legs were so huge with mites. Daily treatments of Bag Balm wiped them out in no time though, but like you said...good thng they don't come with the eggs...

Did you every have an issue with the scaly leg mites getting to the rest of your flock? Bag balm works well to suffocate them - I'm currently soaking in epsom salts (her poor legs are swolen... and she's a BIG bird), scrubbing with a toothbrush to help those old scales come off and then treating with NuStock. She's feeling worlds better since I started treating her and her comb is getting redder.

I've treated the legs of the rest of the birds she was shipped with and I'm keeping an eye on them - none are symptomatic yet, but I've heard nightmare stories of mites spreading through whole flocks and coming back over and over. Hope that's not the case. I like to stay all natural, but if something like that happened, I'd be hitting them with ivermectin to make sure it was gone for good.

I'm hoping to get some BLR Cornish eggs myself soon. LOVE the look of those birds!!!!

No, I never had them before or after that bird. I try to keep my coops really clean, and except those confined in the breeder or juvenile pens, they all free range everyday.

As to the infected bird: A friend of our daughter showed for 4-H and her dad lost his job. They said they couldn't afford to keep their birds so asked me to take them. They all came in their little cages that had obviously not been cleaned properly in a long.....long time. Most of them were in pretty sad shape.

I put them straight into the kennels and cages I use for hospitals and quarantined them for 30 days. I got rid of all their cages immediately. I did gently scrub her legs with dawn then coat them with neosporin before starting the Bag Balm on day two, which I put on in the morning and afternoon every day. I also changed her bedding daily (burned the old stuff), put a layer of DE under the shavings, and dusted all the birds with poultry dust (sevin) and used Ivermec on them too. I wanted to get everything taken care of at one time.

Other than some wet pox two years ago (only lost two birds), I have been really lucky with disease and illness. Hoping it stays that way.

You guys should try Linseed oil and kerosene mixed together and apply that to the leg mites. And also after applying that. You should coat the legs with Vasoline. And I was told to never mess with the leg scales. The damaged ones will fall off by themselves.

I'll keep that in mind if I ever get them on another bird. Luckily, it has only been the one rescue bird in over 4 years.

So, looks like I am about to have a Cornish invasion. Not only are the dozen eggs from the WL Red Cornish with the funky legs arriving tomorrow, but I got a call from Frank Reese of Good Shepherd Poultry farm today. He said he shipped my eggs this afternoon and gave me the tracking information: They will be here Thursday. So, that will be 2 dozen + Cornish in the incubator at the same time...plus a dozen Good Shepherd Barred Rocks and a Dozen German New Hampshires.

Fingers are crossed for decent hatches.

One set of Cornish only came from Florida to Louisiana and the other from Kansas, so hopefully they aren't handled too roughly.
