Oh and @FortCluck I would also maybe try to start with topics he is interested in. It doesn’t necessarily have to be the school books right away but if he is really interested in any particular topic, you could see if there is a book or two on it (I bet there is). That might make it more fun for him. :)
What does he like and what grade is he going into? I'll talk to my librarian buddies & see what they recommend. And try a how-to book. Reading instructions while building something cool or doing something neat is still reading!

Good advice!! Think this was meant for @FortCluck though. :D

He’s into cars like Lamborghini’s and Bugatti’s.
William Boddy authored a "Modern Sports Car" series on a whole slew of auto manufacturers - Bugatti among them. I'm willing to bet you can find them pretty cheaply on Amazon. You can generally get used or Kindle books really cheaply. If you start him on Bugatti, he may want some more.

But what I think I'd start with is a big book on the "history of the modern automobile" or of sports car racing, or the muscle cars of the 60's and 70's. It's okay of the reading level is beyond him, because most of the text consists of short articles and caption blurbs. The point is to get him so engrosssed in the snazzy pictures that he doesn't realize he's been tricked into actually reading!

When he starts coming to you (or yelling down the stairs) with comments like "Hey Ma, did you know that the first (insert auto name here) was the first car to use a hexoplonknerator? You 've got him, then! You simply respond "Really?" and ask if he would like to learn more about hexoplonknerators. If he says "sure!" then you both go directly to the computer and either look up the info to read online or order another book.

Just be prepared. If he responds with "Duh, NO Mom. I'm not stoopid!" Then, you're likely to get a lecture either on why you should already know about hexoplonknerators and/or on how they work. Either way, though, you'll know he's READING!

Well I’m glad I wasn’t on here when everything was blowing up yesterday. My bloods boiling and I was just reading what was said.

Im sorry that there are such inconsiderate people in this world who are selfish and only think of themselves and not those who have lost loved ones. To think that those people are apart of our society hurts my heart because we should love one another and care for one another.

People are losing loved ones from this and for people to think it’s fake, not real, a lie, or whatever they think is truly disgusting.

EVERY LIFE MATTERS... I don’t care what anyone says. We have lost too many people. 1 death from this is a big deal! That’s one life that would’ve been here if this virus never hit our soil!

Then there are people waiting at soup kitchens to feed their family because before this virus they had a job... Now they don’t. They can’t even afford a loaf of bread for their kids. How can someone just turn a blind eye to all of this?

Then there are the mom and pop shops who had to shut down and most likely won’t be reopening because this virus has destroyed their business.

No more of this “the virus isn’t real”

To those who have lost loved ones... I’m sorry for the pain you’re going through from their loss. Keep their memories alive! Celebrate their life!
To others who are tired of the flaming foolishness - just hit the "Ignore" button and the fool slips back under the rock from which it came. It's just not worth feeding.

I’m going to look into that for him.

I agree. I've been a member of BYC for 11 years. Prior to this thread I have only 'blocked'/Ignored 2 people - both of whom are no longer here. This thread has caused me to block 4 members. Why the need to stir ? It's been proven this is a contagious sometimes fatal virus. If you have problems with the attempts to control it, fine - go about your way. Just don't stir the stuff with those of us who for whatever reason see the need for precautions.

I am not on either end of the spectrum. I know the virus is real, and people have died/are dying from it. At the same time, I think there is going to be a much bigger problem if the country wide shut down continues much longer.
Many small businesses have already shut down permanently, and more will follow. People are going to lose their homes. The suicide rates will skyrocket.
Will our economy recover from this? Who knows.
I am grateful to still have a job, and work in an "essential" business. Two of my sisters own their own businesses, and I worry their businesses may not fare well.
Masks are mandatory where I work (two months into the virus). I've tried 3 different styles of "masks", including bandanas, and if we're remotely busy, I feel like I'm suffocating, to the point where I get light headed. I have exercised induced asthma and severe allergies, so my Dr advised me NOT to wear an N95 mask.
I do not judge anyone for whatever side of the fence they sit on. If they chose to wear a mask, or not, it's their business.
Our business is pretty big, they have not restricted the number of customers in the store, and we stay pretty busy. Some weekends have rivaled black Friday busy. I have wondered how it is that not one of the employees have gotten the virus. Masks have only been mandatory the past couple weeks, and gloves are optional. We are cleaning fairly regularly, but it would be impossible to clean everything that every customer has touched in between each customer.
Sorry that my thoughts are all over the place. LOL
I do feel our country needs to start allowing businesses to open, even with some precautionary measures.
If they do not, more people are going to lose their businesses, livelyhood, homes and their lives due to suicide.
On that note, I saw that CA stated that emergency services (LE, Fire, nurses, etc) will be the first cut due to budget cuts.
I fear the future of this country.

I completely agree with MROO. There are a ton of good books out there aimed towards younger boys and getting them to read more. Legos (fabulous series of books on how to build anything Legos, history, all kinds of fun books) Star wars (and all the spin offs), Captain Underpants (very funny, on TV too) Diary of a Wimpy Kid, Geronimo Stilton (a whole series based on a mouse who is a writer and goes on worldly adventures) heck even the old Charlie Brown books.

Libraries are dicey right now but I shop at these places when I want a physical copy-
Thriftbooks.com
https://www.thriftbooks.com/

and BetterWorldBooks.com
https://www.betterworldbooks.com/

So many books are just $4, nice books too not just paperbacks. One places lets you accrue points towards free books and the other takes a portion of their business and donates books to those in need. Both have free shipping over $10 too. I often can get 3 or 4 books for only $12 and I'm always buying gardening, cooking, how to's, quilting, sewing, special interest books for kiddo etc.... books that are normally $20-$30 new on Amazon or $15 used on Amazon. If they are out of a particular book you can sign up for a notification/put it on your wishlist and when they get it you'll get an email so you can scoot over there and get it before anyone else does.

I'm a total bookaholic, as in I walk out of the library with usually 20 or more books at a time and up until the lockdowns almost always have library books around the house. Mostly non-fiction, and even audio books if I'm doing a painting project, though those are easy to get on the library's Overdrive page.

Another thing I've done with kiddo is a lot of the assigned reading at Jr high and HS have been made into movies these days. Like The Giver, The Lovely Bones, or Holes and I'll put them on but not really pay attention to them so kiddo has to answer my silly/pesky questions about the characters, the plot, or whatever I can think of that is not a yes/no question.
