Oh how wonderful! It was such an experience I'm glad to think that as many people as possible got to see all the ships with their crew in traditional uniforms up in the rigging. Is the memory still super fresh for you too?

I can describe it but no one could ever re-create it.

We took the last train out of the city back up to the Mid-Hudson area where I lived. All along the route small towns were having their own celebrations with fireworks and bonfires and street parties that went on well past midnight -- much of it reflected in the dark water of the river as we chugged past.

Another time. Another world. Right, MROO?
You've got THAT right! You just gelled a New Year's Resolution for me. We're going to search out some "awesome memory making" activities/events/whatever this year. I mean, some inevitably happen, but I want to make sure we have some, so I'll be on the lookout for potential memory-makers. They don't have to be big ... just special!

Whoa, folks. A friend of mine just posted this. I was so shocked that I went looking for the numbers to back it up ... and found that his post was actually at least a week old. I'm not positive, but I think we had days last week that topped 9/11. Pretty impressive ... and terribly frightening ... for a "fake virus." Yup, staying home this Christmas ... and New Year's too!

It makes me so mad when people pretend this is not real and not dangerous. We have a general contractor in our house right now -- a nice man but he thinks it's all hysteria and it makes me furious. It's partly because my daughter has had to deal with the pain and death and danger 5 days a week for about 11 months this year but equally because anyone who denies it totally dismisses and disrespects the 300K-and-counting lives already lost and families already broken.

The graphic is a bit misleading - there were days in the 1918 plague that exceeded this, but not a ton. But the point is well made IMO.

Nothing but clouds here all night too. It's nearly 1AM - bedtime is at 7:20ish. 6.5 hours to go. The yule log is doing great, though.

No way to see the stars tonight - light pollution and clouds as far as the eye can see. Been having a great day tho.

All nighter!? Wow!

It's an anglo-saxon pagan tradition to keep the fire burning all night until the sun returns to the earth again. It burns the old year away and carries our hopes for the new year to the spirits of the earth and sky (or gods if you're theistic). I'll be up until the sun returns. :)
That’s awesome!! I love that! 🥰 must be exhausting though? Hope you have caffeine 😂🤣

:hugs It's a very meaningful tradition for me. TBH, my all nighters come naturally - I have chronic insomnia and have since I was very young. I did have an XL coffee earlier today though, and I may drink some green milk tea if I feel a little sleepy. I'm already about 4 hours into the fire and the log is not even burnt half way through.

That’s awesome you have something like that! Too many people, for any holiday, just focus on the candy, costumes, presents, whatever so nice you have an actual tradition!! Sorry about the insomnia though! :hugs and wow! Big log!
