According to the internet ( that infalable source), it was to help promote trade to help rebuild Japan's economy post war.

I don't think you can call us being on Okinawa "controlling Japan." Okinawa makes up .3% of Japan's total land mass. We had a treaty obligation to be there, to protect Japan.
